A JD Review - Avengers: Infinity War (2018) · 5:35pm May 3rd, 2018

Wow. It's here. It's finally here.

Marvel has done it. They have actually succeeded in building up 10 years for this moment, because right here, in this film, we do see the culmination of everything Marvel has been building up since Iron Man.

I'll separate this review into a non-spoiler and spoiler section, because this movie desperately, desperately needs it. Let's get started!

NON-SPOILER REVIEW

What an absolute thrill ride. Nearly everything about this film I loved, from the writing, to the directing, to the incredible acting, the CGI on Thanos and the CGI overall, the story, Thanos, and especially the ending (which we'll get into later on in spoilers). I think what makes this film truly special, is that it is in fact a culmination. Nearly every single character we've seen in the MCU is in this film, playing some sort of role. But I was very surprised with their take on Thanos.

I'm not a big comic book guy. I've never read a full superhero comic in my life, but I like the stories that are in them, and especially Thanos' story in the comic story line. What we see in the movie, however, is a much different take on Thanos. He still has the same end goal, but his motivations, and his emotional struggle to achieve his goal, are what truly makes him stand out. Thanos really is the most terrifying and greatest Marvel villain we've seen to date.

Another thing I loved about this film were the interactions of all these incredible characters. Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man meeting the Guardians of the Galaxy was one of the highlights of the film. Thor's interaction with Rocket and Groot and their little side quest was great. And Captain America's team defending Wakanda with Black Panther was one of the most brutal and well-crafted battle sequences I've seen in movies.

Not only do we see these characters interact and fight side by side (which also gives us some great comedic moments), but we also see more emotional weight on these heroes. This is easily the most emotional Marvel film to date, so much so that I actually got a little teary-eyed in a few scenes in particular, which we'll get into for spoilers. Which means...

Incredible film! Easily my favorite Marvel movie! 10/10!

And now...

SPOILER REVIEW

Warning: you are entering spoiler territory. Read at your own risk.

Not many movies can make me cry. I can count two times a film actually achieved that, the first being Remember the Titans and the second being Coco surprisingly enough. In Infinity War, while there weren't actual tears running down my face, I did get a little teary-eyed in a few scenes in particular.

The scenes are as such:

Thanos sacrificing Gamora to acquire the Soul Stone. Incredibly heart-wrenching to watch. Did NOT expect to see Gamora die, so it definitely caught me off-guard. Plus, we got to see Red Skull return, which shocked me. :pinkiegasp:

Iron Man getting stabbed by Thanos. It was right here, seeing Tony fighting with every inch of his strength and heart, only to be bested was just plain horrifying. My heart actually started to hurt, thinking over and over that this is it. This is where Iron Man dies. Thankfully, he survives. Barely. Still, very scary. :raritydespair:

And finally, Spider-Man's death. I heard that Tom Holland actually improvised this scene, and holy crap he sold it so incredibly well. After Thanos snaps his fingers, half of the universe is wiped away, turned to dust. And Spider-Man begs for his life, hugging Tony Stark and saying, "I don't want to go." I almost started crying right here. Easily the most emotional scene in the movie. :fluttercry:

I knew there were going to be deaths, I just didn't realize that it would be on this scale. I think more than half of all the heroes die, including Black Panther (incredibly shocking), all of the Guardians except Rocket, Bucky, Falcon, Wanda, Vision, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, and several more I'm sure I'm forgetting. I heard some people in my theater say, "That was stupid" or "Well that sucks". But honestly... I thought it fit very well. It was the perfect amount of shock value, killing off the heroes you wouldn't expect, and sparing the ones you thought would die (I really thought Tony and Cap's days were numbered here). But yeah, I thought it was great. Incredible emotional toll.

And yes, Doctor Strange has a plan. He saw all the possible outcomes, so don't give him any crap for giving up the Time Stone in exchange for Stark's life. Also, Star-Lord...

I don't blame him. There, I said it. After hearing of Gamora's death, he loses it and starts attacking Thanos right before the heroes could take the gauntlet off. People said he was the biggest idiot and basically killed everyone off. But... can you really blame him? He's lost everything, from his mother, his father, and now the only woman he truly loved, of course he would lose it and start attacking Thanos. It makes sense for his character and it fit the plot.

If there is one thing I didn't like in this film, it would be that we never saw Thanos get the Power Stone from Xandar. I thought that would have been an incredible sequence, and definitely highlight why Thanos is the most terrifying villain when he destroys an entire planet. Maybe they did add that scene, but it was just cut for time. But still, what we did get was incredibly brutal, what with Thanos and the Black Order killing off all of Asgard. Especially Loki. His death was the most brutal in the film.

In the end, Thanos snaps his fingers, and half of the universe is wiped away. Gone. He actually wins. The villain actually wins. We kind of got this in Civil War, but here it's full-blown in your face. Thanos wins, and Nick Fury contacts Captain Marvel. I absolutely cannot wait for what the future has in store, and what Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel will do to change these events, because you know these heroes are coming back (like they'd really kill off Black Panther and Spider-Man for good. Come on now. :ajbemused:)

But, yeah. Best Marvel film to date. Easily my favorite. Go check it out.

10/10.

Also, if any of you were wondering, the outline for the crossover is nearly finished. I will begin writing the story soon... :raritywink: after finals week that is. :ajsleepy:

Damn... Welp, time to wait for it to hit Netflix or Amazon to see it!

I think some characters were kinda underused like Cap and Black Widow but to be fair, they could only achieve equal focus on so many of these characters. And chances are they'll get their moment to shine in the sequel.

So what do you think, JD? Got enough material?

I'm just curious: are you going to stretch this story to cover both Infinity War and next years Avengers film? Or are they gonna be two separate stories? Or are you not gonna cover that one? :?

Same here, my fav Marvel Movie, I was deeply saddened when Loki dyed in like the first 10 Minutes, as well as the death's of the Heroes, but the fight scenes were amazing, although I wanted to see a fight between Hulk and Cull Obsidian/Black Dwarf, but I guess after the beat down Thanos gave him, it's understandable that the Hulk wanted to remain inside Banner, Thanos truly left an impression on Hulk and Banner, especially when Banner returned to earth mortified from the events on the Asgardian Ship and telling the Heroes how much of a threat Thanos is, even without using any of the Stones, anyway, can't wait to read your take on the Movie Prime

So we know everyone gone with the Snap is safe, but everyone left standing to fix it is who I’m worried about. The original Avengers started this journey and they will be there to help end it, but I don’t think some of them will be around to see that end...

Best of luck on the story (and finals for that matter), Prime. Hopefully we can get an answer to the most important question from the movie:

Why is Gamora?

Told you it was a bold film.

MARVEL WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME. WHY DO YOU MAKE ME WATCH MY CHILDHOOD HERO DIE BEGGING FOR HELP IN TONY'S ARMS.

Despite some missed opportunities and underuse of some characters, this film is definitely an instant cult classic! The ending had really left an empty feeling in me (:fluttercry: Seeing Spidey, my favourite Marvel hero, begging not to go really hit me).
I think Doctor Strange knows what he's doing,. He'd possibly foreseen in the only one of the possible futures that they could only win if Thanos won first and wipe out half the universe first with faith left to those that survived to fight another day and undo most of the damage eventually. But he may also know that not everyone is gonna come back alive. After all, victory does not come without costs. Even Thanos costed everything to achieve his goal
And I don't blame Star-Lord for screwing up their chances of beating Thanos when they nearly had it once he learned of Gamora's death and lashed out of him. He only did what any human being would react to learning the death of a loved one, its part of his character. I mean he reacted the same way to Ego without a second thought (except with guns blazing) in GOTG2 when the latter admitted he was responsible for causing the death of his mother.

Also, good luck on working on your story, JD. And whatever you do, DON'T you dare hold back! Because if Marvel is not afraid to break our hearts like this film did, then neither should you.

Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed it, too.

That being said, now that I’ve seen it, I’m really anxious to read your next story. And with all the characters, both from MLP and Marvel, plus with several more that you hinted at in your teasers, I’m looking forward to how it plays out.

Now, you said that the third one would be the last one of this crossover universe, but considering how Infinity War ended, does that still hold true, or could there be another one after this? Cause that would be awesome!

Regardless, I’m excited for what you’ll give us.

Best of luck on finals!

4852827 Might be a while for that. :twilightsheepish:

4852828 Oh, I got plenty. :moustache:

4852834 I got something planned for both Infinity War and Avengers 4.

4852840 Thanks! I can't wait to write it!

4852861 I got something better... HOW is Gamora? :rainbowderp:

4852863 Very bold.

4852864 Because they had the balls to do it. To do what we never saw coming. :fluttercry: That, or they'll all just come back in the sequel and they're messing with us.

4852872 Oh, I ain't holding back. I got some pretty emotional moments planned. :raritycry:

4852883 Thanks! And yeah, I got some surprises for the next story. Stick around. :raritywink:

4852947
You gonna wait for the completion of Sense of Humor's GotG Vol.2 sidestory before you write it, in case he introduces any interesting elements that could be in your future story?

4852951 Sense and I have discussed this. I'm gonna continue certain elements in his story, but my story will most certainly come out before he finishes his. What I continue from his story won't spoil his story.

I can't believe I'm saying this but, I'm hoping the ponies in your story will change our Heroes fate

4852960 Fate can change... :trixieshiftright:

I had to do a double take when Gamora died and when Bucky faded away first, then everyone else started to go. Vision, Wanda, Groot, T'Challa, Sam, Mantis, Drax, Quill, Strange, and Spidey :(

Even though it was too much for my feels to bear, (seriously, I was just shocked and petrified when the credits started rolling). But you can't help but admire the genius behind it, in almost every MCU movie, it's the same old story: the good guy wins and the big bad's ambitions are foiled, but not with this, Thanos kept his promise to Dr. Strange, he managed to wipe out half the universe, the one thing no one would have ever expected to see, and while it was depressing on SO many levels, it was nevertheless pure genius. Which is why this along with Civil War are among my favorite MCU movies to date.

Yay!!! i was waiting for your review! I'm glad you liked it, it was an amazing movie, if only really sad at the end.
Some things i wanted to say, that i've been discussing with some guys in the SpaceBattles Forums.
About Thanos motivation:

Though you can say that there were other posible solutions, i think the reason he was so fixated in "balancing" the universe, is a consecuence of what happened in his home planet, he came up with a solution, to wipe out half the population whether they were rich or poor, but they didn't listen to him, their population reached a critical number, and if the remaining debris in Titan mean anything, i'd say there was a war for resources in the plantet that ended Thanos' race; So, maybe he feels the need to prove he was right about the balancing, or he just can't think of anything(since aparently he has been doing this for a while, and he just can't change his ways).

Also, about Thanos power levels. I think is worth noting that the Stones don't give any passive ability and if he was using any of the stones' powers, they were glowing, so our heroes almost always fought base Thanos, in fact, he just used the power of the stones when he was forced to, otherwise he just used his own force.

The theme of sacrifice is really well done in the movie, and ultimately this is why Thanos won, he actually was willing to make sacrifices, while the heroes couldn't, as the exchange between both Captain and Vision proved: "We don't Trade lives", and obviosly, this is the reason of their fall.

Honestly, Thanos was my favorite part of the movie, even though what he did to Gamora was horrible, you can see, when they arrived to Vormir, that he tries to shield her when Red Skull showed up, and she actually kinda hide behind him. (This was noted by someone in the MCU subreddit, and i just watched the movie again today, and it was like that)That shows that Thanos did really care about his Daughter, or otherwise the soul stone wouldn't have appeared when he sacrificed her.

Anyway, amazing movie, and it really payoff this 6 years of hype for Thanos. :pinkiehappy:

You know, in the possibility that Clint was one of the few who survived, that would mean the 6 original founding members of the Avengers are among all that's left.

Wonder which MLP characters would be erased from existence.

4852955

Speaking of the the Guardians of the Galaxy, I remember that they made a brief appearance at the end of This War of Ours, paying Princess Celestia and Princess Luna a visit right before Twilight and the others arrived. Both sisters seemed quite amused afterward.

Any possibility we might get some kind of one-shot of how that particular visit went in the future? :raritywink:

4852988 Oh, wow, I didn't notice that in the movie with Thanos standing in front of Gamora. Nice catch.

4853018 I don't know. Sounds like a fun idea, though.

Now, you know how i felt!!!

4852960
You and me BOTH, brudda!!

4853013
hopefully none in this story. hopefully the ponies prevent the snap somehow!

Please, PLEASE, have the snap prevented somehow!

4853103 Can't reveal the ending. You'll have to wait and see. :raritywink:

4853105
ill take that as a maybe!

4852988
I'd also like to point out that Kevin Feige has stated Thanos to be the strongest/most powerful MCU villain to date, which should put Base Thanos above Ego, who is a Celestial and a living Planet, even Rocket said Thanos was the toughest in the Universe and that was after the Guardians met and beat Ego

"I don't feel so good, Mr. Stark."

:(

4853150 "I don't want to go." :fluttercry:

4853105
Personally I think it should stay (not saying I liked it myself seeing all people turned to ash was not fun)
What I mean is that it just shows the gravity of what happened
What the heroes must push through to beat him
It'd be interesting if any of the ponies go that way as well
Can't wait for how this'll go

4853013
My thoughts exactly
Not a great or happy one
But my thoughts

Loki could've made a potential good guy, but very sad, he only lasted in the beginning, Thanos is nearly OP I tell ya. And there goes almost everybody, Oh, Hopefully, Captain Marvel will return to make her grand entrance.

Thanos wins, Flawless Victory, Universitality.

If Rainbow Dash doesn't taunt Thanos by calling him "Prune Face" at least once in your adaptation, I will be very disappointed.

4853272
She must, tho, at least once, a-hem, although Steve's gonna shut her up, knowing how big a business he is, but yeah, call him "Prune Face", no, even better "Prune Ass".

4853272
Also, Thanos' not affected by taunting.

4853278
Deadpool: Cut the hate breaks, Thanos.

I do have to say that I was a little disappointed that The Black Order didn't get more development. I think that those characters could have had been more.
But still an awesome movie none the less

One more for the road

Ok I'm done

This movie’s main character—to me—is Thanos. I didn’t like much of Captain Marvel’s reveal, more of a promotion to marketing than to the actual movie. The movie in of itself is a build-up and a mystery. It did live up to the hype, the longest Marvel movie to date, yet it passed like a blur. One of my favorites, gets a 10.

4853272 That, or "ballsack chin".

4853341 At least we know Captain Marvel's on her way to help. God knows how powerful she is.

4853390
I assumed she would be on Earth, because Nick looked like he was about to meet up with her.

4853388
i think prune face works better.

4853441
Rocket's more good with name-calling than Rainbow.

This film was simply marvellous.
I can't wait for the next part.
And I can't wait to see your upcoming fanfic.
I am eager to see if/which of the equestrians will disappear!
