    Droppin' By

Hello, I was in the neighborhood and had just realized that my last blog post was a bit of a downer, given that it was around the time of my Grandma's passing and funeral. I think I oughta leave you folks with something a bit more upbeat or at least something neutral.

    And Now, A Newsletter

Huh, back in July I said I oughta talk more around here. It's now the day after Christmas and I have not, in fact, talked more around here.

So, I'll give you the rundown on what I've been up to since then. Warning, it gets a little long in talking about last summer's vacation and about a new fixation I have.

So, Season 8 on Saturday · 4:21am Mar 20th, 2018

...so, I'll think I'll give you a brief rundown on what I thought of the rest of the Season 7 episodes since I last had thoughts. Aside from my thoughts on the season finale, I last left off on 'Triple Threat', so, here we go.

Campfire Tales
Sweet Celestia! The only way to make me really fear a spider is make it fly, and those fly-ders are terrifying! :raritydespair: But, regardless, it's nice to learn more about Equestria's history, and they're pretty neat stories too. I do question why Rockhoof just evolved like a Pokemon, but hey, he faced a volcano (even if Aang did it better). Asian pony stuff is neat, and pegasi fighting dragons are awesome. Can't say I have much to chew on besides, "Cool, Equestrian lore."

Daring Done?
An okay episode with a solid flow and an interesting message about how breaking stuff makes people dislike you. My two quibbles are that Pinkie didn't really need to be there (I know, she's supposed to be connected with Somnambula, but she still felt tacked on), and how Rainbow got captured by Caballeron and goons. Seriously, Dashie, you'd put up a fight or fly out of their reach... it's stupid, though it does somehow warp into hilarious for me. Imagine Quibble Pants' reaction to that scene. XD

A Health of Information
This was a really good showing for Fluttershy! I love it when she goes to lengths to help somepony, and this time's no difference, especially with the stakes this time around. I mean, turning into a tree... brrr! Also, Mage Meadowbrook's story is my favorite of the tales we got this season. :pinkiehappy:

To Change a Changeling
Pharynx is best changeling. He's hilarious with his tough, no-nonsense attitude, and he has valid points on how the hive needs to be protected. And his 'reformed' design is pretty darn cool. I dunno, he just really makes the episode. Points docked for missing out on a potentially interesting rogue changeling plot, though. Ah, well, maybe those valley girl changelings that showed up in my fic Brotherly Bonding Time are still technically rogue, even if they're... valley girls.

It Isn't the Mane Thing About You
I'm a little mixed. On the one hand, it has a lot of great moments with Rarity freakouts, makeshift wigs, and Pinkie being adorable with the Cake Twins. And Rarity pulls off the punk look extremely well! On the other hand, there's the whole "hair is so hard to magically grow back" thing, which raises eyebrows when there's a mustache growing spell all the way from Season One. Stretches my disbelief just a tad. There's also the fact that the Cakes are apparently a year old... despite three Hearth's Warming episodes suggesting that it should be at least three years in the show's timeline, so they expect me to believe that it's been less than two years? Not buying that, not at all.

And to be honest, I think it'd fit better as a Season 1 or 2 episode--or an Equestria Girls episode. Psht, too late to stick the episode there, I guess.

Marks and Recreation
That'll teach me to get hyped for a thing based on a song! Seriously, Rumble's song is amazing, and yet, this episode is so boring! It also highlights why after two and a half years I'm still not keen on the CMC's talent. Cutie marks are an individual thing, with individual struggles and triumphs that mold a unique person--and they made the CMC a quick and easy shortcut that'll give a poor blank flank the answer! Being a counselor to an already-marked pony having an identity crisis is one thing; Equestria needs more therapists. But with helping blank flanks along, the CMC are undercutting what should be a personal triumph after a journey of self-discovery. That's what makes Cutie Marks special, not yelling to some misguided rebel that "Cutie Marks are special!"

That, and their episodes are even more samey than when they were searching for their own marks.

Once Upon a Zeppelin
This was a nice episode, with some neat surprises to boot. I didn't expect Iron Will to show up! Nor for Twilight's mother to be an adrenaline junkie. Nor the kinda-creepy nervous fanboy Star Tracker (at least he got better near the end). Although I'm disappointed that Spike wasn't part of the cruise, I at least enjoyed the episode for what it was, and with this, we now have characterizations for all the Mane Six families. Yay!

Secrets and Pies
I hate this episode. Dare I say it, this episode very nearly dethroned Somepony to Watch Over Me as my least favorite episode of the show, only losing because on a technical level, StWOM is worse. That, and I admit that evil Dash did get a laugh out of me.

But what makes me so angry about this is how utterly stupid and contrived the whole conflict is, and how easily it could have been avoided if Rainbow actually brought up what her actual favorite dessert was beforehand. People praise this episode for being hilarious, but this isn't funny. This is really uncomfortable, from Pinkie ranging from annoyingly pushy to painfully distressed, to the completely unnecessary lying of Rainbow to the point where it feels manipulative, to the sugar-coated ending that gives off the vibe of "Lying to make your friends happy is such a wonderful and noble thing to do!", enough that the honesty lesson just feels tacked on, and how a better lesson was presented in the beginning of the episode: Pinkie makes pies for Rainbow a lot, so it'd stand to reason that maybe Rainbow once liked her pies, but grew sick of them, and then the lying thing snowballed. And then there's a lesson for Pinkie, which is "too much of a good thing is not so good". But apparently, the episode wants me to believe that Rainbow always hated pie, and Pinkie was just too stupid to notice.

I'd be more forgiving if this was a Season 1 episode, but this is Season 7. You can't expect me to just bend over and accept this this late in the game.

Uncommon Bond
Nothing spectacular, but it is kind of sweet to see Sunburst nerding out with Twilight and do magic stuff with Trixie. There was also something about rocks, but eh. I did feel a little sorry for Starlight; there is only so much time in Sunburst's visit, and he's bonding with her friends throughout much of it. Even if the 'literally reliving your childhood thing' was a little much and Sunburst was right to call her out on that, I really got how she felt. But still, Sunburst is adorable here.

Compared to Season 6, Season 7 Starlight feels more like an organic character I like watching instead of being a drag for any episode she appears in by either being naughty, whiny, or some cardboard cutout on wheels. Good on you for improving her, writers.

Well, that's my thoughts on Season 7, and we'll see about Season 8 when it premieres! :yay:

Prepare to get a lot of pushback on Secrets and Pies!

Imagine Quibble Pants' reaction to that scene. XD

"What were you doing? What were you thinking?"
"I just froze, okay?"
"No! Not okay! You saved my life almost before I even realized I needed saving! You spend more time in the air than on the ground. And last I checked, Caballeron hasn't had the Eye of Fear and Flame since Book 4, so that excuse is out!"
"And what would you have done? Snark at him until he tied your mouth shut?"
"Yeah, probably—"
"Ha!"
"Because I'm not one of the most amazing athletes in Equestria! Do you have any idea how worried you make me sometimes!?"
"..." :rainbowderp:
"... Pretend you didn't hear that last bit."

You know, I never considered "It Isn't the Mane Thing About You" as an Equestria Girls scenario. It would make a lot more sense there, especially given the mustache spell.

And yeah, "Secrets and Pies" does have serious issues when airing this late in the series, especially given Pinkie's normally comprehensive dossiers.

I personally liked Secrets and Pies for the humor, but I completely understand your point! There were issues that could have been explained/resolved better.

To Change and Changeling is one of my favorite episodes because I, too, LOVE Pharynx. Not as much as his brother, who is my favorite MLP character in general, I admit, but I still adore him.

Daring Done. Well, to be honest, I barely remember what Pinkie's purpose in that episode was. All I remember was that Rainbow was tied up. :rainbowlaugh:

Oh, and also:

That scenario made me absolutely happy. Thank you.

I found Secrets and Pies really boring, it felt like something was missing...
Also, I really liked Uncommon Bond and Campfire Tales. Two of my favorite episodes from the season.
