    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

What does the full printed editing draft of To Serve In Hell look like? · 12:00am Feb 23rd, 2018

I’m glad you asked! :pinkiehappy:

Note the two lovely words on the right. :coolphoto:

I just threw up in my mouth a little. Then actually threw up. :pinkiesick:

That’s a lot of paper, there. :rainbowderp:

Yes, of course, that’s obviously it. :derpytongue2:

It’s a pretty solid chunk of paper! I don’t have an exact count because of how the early (already published) chapters are split into their own documents (and still have some edit notes from Pascoite from last year :raritydespair:), but extrapolating from the great big document with chapters 12-42, I’m gonna say this is probably 350 printed pages, or 175 pieces of paper. Do bear in mind that this is printed for ease of hand-editing, though; so it’s a generous 12-point font with 1.5 paragraph spacing. Would’ve been a lot less if I’d skimped! :raritywink:

You and me both, man. I’m kinda to the point where I hate it a lot, but I also still love it, and I need to get it done before the hate wins out. :flutterrage:

Useless random trivia:

If the imp of the perverse tickled your fancy and you decided to send each page separately through the post, you could print all that off simplex (single sided) and futz with the spacing so that you had 500 pages, and you would qualify for the best 5-digit automation mailing rate discount ($0.173 per envelope versus $0.50 per stamp with DSCF entry)

Huzzah! Today the postal system, tomorrow the world! :rainbowwild:

Great work, friend. This onion is proud of you. What's the word count right now?

Thank you. It's about 99,576 right now, give or take.

This alpha-read/edit is taking some time, but this should be at least somewhat good before it gets inflicted on you guys!

Yeah that's about right. It's always kind of amazing how many reams of paper you can go through when writing a novel length story.
