Shill: Bathtub book holder · 8:08pm Jul 12th, 2017

I just created an Etsy shop to sell my custom bathtub book holders, of which I have made exactly one:

I built this because I like to read in the bathtub, and the existing bathtub book holders for sale weren't stable enough for my big, expensive books. Some friends think it's cool and want one, so I made an Etsy listing.

I told you I was just an honest business-pony :trixieshiftright:

This book-holder is heavy and ugly, but it will not fall into the bathtub. It can hold the book below the level of the crosspiece, so you can lay back in the tub and still read it. You'll need to screw it together when it arrives.

It must be custom-made for your bathtub. You need to take the 3 measurements in the last picture (crosspiece width, gap, and angle A in degrees) and send them to me.

So basically you sell us the lumber and we make the book-holder ourselves. :duck:

(NB: I am not at all opposed to this, but I do still think it's a little amusing. And it's a very nice-looking book-holder. If I had a bathtub that could use it, I'd seriously consider getting one, and I may point a friend in its direction who I know would be more likely to use it than I.)

Are you considering making a version for the stand up shower?

Hap

You know people gonna put their iPads on there and drop them in the tub.

Can it be made flat, so a toaster will fit on it? In case I want toast while I'm bathing...

4599822 I buy the materials, cut everything precisely, sand everything, sand down the edges, file off and sand down all the corners, measure and drill 36 holes with 4 different drill bits, countersink 12 holes, seal everything, let it dry, turn it over seal it again, let it dry, seal it again if necessary, sand it again if necessary, screw it together to check it, unscrew everything, clean up around the miter saw, the bandsaw, the belt sander, the drill press, and the paintbrushes, then package and ship it. It took me about 10 hours to make the first one. I'm hoping to get it down to 5 hours.

For some reason I'm immediately afraid that this will electrocute me if the book falls in the tub.

The internal bracer on the tub should be adjustable - tub walls aren't a universal width.

I do love a good entrepreneurial spirit. Clever design!

As the description points out, each is made custom to fit your tub.

Also it should have cup holders.

(I think the idea is that since he does them to order, you tell him what the width should be.)

4599938 They are slightly adjustable, by being able to attach the outer piece in 4 different positions. I don't have any good idea for how to make it finely adjustable, like a clamp. The pieces must stay firmly in place.

4600026 It really should! I could add those, just screw on a top layer with a large hole drilled in it, maybe another layer on that to make a wine-glass slot holder. I could make that an option.

Can there be a holster for a gun once the wine runs out?

Whaaaaaaaaaat
:D you've gotta test it out tonight! See how it works with different books, like paperbacks that don't like to stay open.

That's evil. So many books and iPads and toasters will be dropped into the filthy depths, for people are clumsy asses. And, assuming they survive, will want replacements. And who'll prolly be there, wanting to act as a middle horse, to make that cash? Bad Horse. Damn evil 👍🏻

Would probably buy if I still had a bathtub.

I'd consider getting one if our tub would work with it, but alas!

With all the folks saying iPads and such will fall into the tub, would it be possible to add a lip to that bottom portion of the actual book holder portion? Like, not for all models, but as an option for folks wanting to use things like iPads. I figure it would get in the way of turning pages, otherwise.

4599923 That costs extra.

4600205 I've thought about it. I'd want it not to interfere with reading books, which a simple lip would do.
Option 1: 2 pegs in holes, one on each side, that can be removed.
Option 2: A groove cut in the middle of the lower support, a little wider than an ipad. How wide is an iPad? This would be a serious pain to make, though, as I don't have a router.

I can honestly not remember the last time I sat down in the tub and took a bath... but a good guess would be when I wasn't taller than it. :applejackunsure: Interesting idea though, definitely better then I could do since I detest power saws and all that.

Now, I need a little tool to turn the pages for me when my hands get soggy.

Honestly it's why I tend to have a little bathroom speaker and podcasts instead, even though I usually way prefer books.

What sealant do you use to prevent mold?

I'm sorry, Bathtub + Large Expensive Book = tears. Only ever tears.

Read the listing. Default is polyurethane. Nontoxic sealant is an option. I used treated wood for mine, but decided i don't want to deal with the dust. Screws are all outdoor.
