Review #112 - Why? · 5:26pm Jul 5th, 2017

Just so you know, I have changed my username and coverphoto.

Don't worry, the username change is nothing substantial. Just removing the "mlp" to make it flow better.

Enough about me, time for a review:

Why? by The 24th Pegasus
(Sad, Slice of Life)
I have lived my entire life among the ice at the top of the world with my pod. I knew little of the world outside of the ways of We of the Sea, and as a filly, that suited me just fine. But one day, the steel whales came, and on their backs, they carried creatures not unlike myself, yet wholly different. For while I swam in the sea, they walked on the land and flew through the air. Yet they reminded me of my kind, so curious, so tragic, and so infinitely precious. Where they did not understand, they sought to learn with a foolish stubbornness. Where they wandered far from home, they extended their hooves in friendship. Where they waged their wars, they fought with a violent savagery that was frightening to me. As I held a dear friend close, the breath fleeing from his body, I only wanted to know one thing. Why?

Review
So, I started reading this and thought it sounded super familiar. I then realized I read it somewhere in a writeoff, and I even checked awhile ago and it was true. But, seeing how I cannot find it anywhere now, and the author even confirmed it was never in a writeoff, I have decided I am going crazy. Moving on, I would say this is a drama slice of life fic more than a sad one, though there are many sad elements. She-of-the-Starry-Sea, the main character, is quite the innocent creature. Innocent here does not mean the opposite of guilty, though, it means pure, unblemished by horrors. She is also curious, always wanting to know more. Until one day, a war begins, though she doesn't know that's what it is. But by the end of it, she finally understands. Not gonna talk about anyone else, for that would spoil even more than I already have. I think the strongest part of this is how 24th was able to describe the world, characters, events, and even emotion without using any dialogue.

Sadly, it has a greatest weakness. The fact that there is a war is kinda out of place. Like, why are there giant pony World War 1 style naval battles? Sure, it's not that important, but it is a little odd.

Recommendation: Highly Recommended. (Powerful feels, amazingness all around).

Woo! Someone who actually mentions when they change their name! Makes maintaining the BMRL so much easier.

You are quite welcome .

(I also know it's bothered you since forever that it didn't flow).
