ICYMI: Disney's Mech-X4 on Disney XD · 12:13pm Apr 17th, 2017

In November, Disney XD premiered a live action series that is...rather atypical of their usual fare.

VERY typical of Disney XD, it went on a months-long hiatus after airing only six episodes. Beginning today, over the next two weeks, eight new episodes (of the first season's 21-episode run) will air.

When this show first premiered, I dismissed it, as I generally do with ANY live-action Disney series. But over the months since its premiere, I began to question that decision and felt mildly curious. However, I still missed many chances to get caught up on it and find out what it was all about. Last month, I checked to see how many episodes had actually aired, and was surprised to learn it had only aired six episodes to date.

Then, last week, I learned new episodes were on the horizon beginning today.

I spent yesterday afternoon getting caught up in preparation for the new episodes. I'm actually glad, now, that I waited to get started on this one, because with the cliffhanger episode six ended on, the wait would have been excruciating.

What is Mech-X4?

To put it simply, Mech-X4 is American tokusatsu done right. If you liked Megas XLR, you'll probably like this--but the tone is quite different. the series has an excellent blend of comedy, action, and serious drama--all the ingredients necessary to create quality tokusatsu.

The premise: One day, a high school freshman named Ryan wakes up to discover he's a technopath. As he uses his newfound abilities in pretty much the way you'd expect, he sees visions of a ferry in a junkyard. Ryan and his two friends go there after school one day and discover a giant robot hidden in a secret silo. At first, they're just interested in messing around with it.

Then they find out what it was really built for: some very dangerous people are creating giant monsters, and Mech-X4 is the only defense humanity has against them.

Each episode of the show is plot-intensive. Even at its craziest, Mech-X4 advances its plot, in which the crew of the robot balance their personal lives and fighting giant monsters, while slowly discovering the scope of the enemy plot. Meanwhile, the enemy is also learning about them...

I cannot stress enough how amazing this show is, and the production values are through the roof. If you have Disney XD, or access to an on demand service that carries Disney XD programming, you should absolutely make time for this one.
