How to Make YOUR Blurb/Description Better

So, I've been spending a fair bit of time here. It's a site for writers, similar to Fimfiction, but a tad more... general.

How You Go About It - The Editing Process

I've been writing for a little over two years now, both as a terribly time-consuming hobby, and for work. When I started, I thought that rereading, editing and drafting were sins. They were wastes of my precious time. Now, after many a mistake, my views have changed.

Poetry!

That thing with the rhymes and the counts and the messed up formats. I suck at it. Yet, it's one of the bigger parts of the literary world.

For this month's SALT competition I extend the invitation to you all to try it. The word limit is two hundred (200), one that you shouldn't exceed. But you can write as many sappy verses as you wish! Place them here, or, if you're the shy type, send them over via PM.

The Prompts are as follows:

Something about flowers

Something Big Mac would wax on about

Something uber cheesy.

All of them will be placed within a short story I've been planning.

For those that aren't into that task:
Is poetry still a viable form of literature in our modern society? Will it always be elitist? And Why is it so ?

It will always be elitist because people are stupid, and can't find the time to appreciate something with class.

Question, is it any of the prompts and can we submit more than 1.

Edit: Um formatting might be a issue with how posting and messaging works. Can I link you a story format in order to ensure formatting?

That feel when I'd been thinking over suggesting the exact same thing for this week's prompt.

Ravens, I am scared. :raritydespair:

So i go wright a poem, and just post it on this thread? Did i read that right?

I wrote a poem once for a contest , then deleted it because then i realized the poem had to be about a particular topic

Favorite poem: "I Have a Rendezvous with Death" Alan Seeger

I HAVE a rendezvous with Death
At some disputed barricade,
When Spring comes back with rustling shade
And apple-blossoms fill the air—
I have a rendezvous with Death
When Spring brings back blue days and fair.

It may be he shall take my hand
And lead me into his dark land
And close my eyes and quench my breath—
It may be I shall pass him still.
I have a rendezvous with Death
On some scarred slope of battered hill,
When Spring comes round again this year
And the first meadow-flowers appear.

God knows 'twere better to be deep
Pillowed in silk and scented down,
Where love throbs out in blissful sleep,
Pulse nigh to pulse, and breath to breath,
Where hushed awakenings are dear...
But I've a rendezvous with Death
At midnight in some flaming town,
When Spring trips north again this year,
And I to my pledged word am true,
I shall not fail that rendezvous.
-------
He wrote it as a soldier in one of the world wars. I read somewhere that he died the next day in battle (although i could be wrong)

As for your question, poetry will always be appreciated as long as there are humans on this planet.

However, its popularity will change. Stand alone poetry doesnt seem to be very popular, however poetry in a book, movie, or play seems to be very popular. (how many times do you find yourself loving a quote from a movie or book)

as for elitist i dont know. You have to be smarter to write a good poem than you do to write a good story; however, people love the Pisistratus things so you could potentially be a moron with a poem loved by millions.

There you go, one poem whipped up on the fly, need anything else just call, I can do these in my sleep.

To Know...

To see her flutter on the breeze,
And to know I can never go with her,
Though my wings are just as strong,
And my speed far greater,
To know I can never out race her,

To see her settle gently down,
And to know I can never sit beside her,
Though she gladly take the time,
To indulge me being there,
To know I could never even ask her,

To see her float about on butterfly wings,
And to know I can never be so happy,
Though I’m sure if I tired,
I could imitate the feeling,
To know I could never do it like her,

To see her tend so kindly,
To the animals she loves,
And wishing only once,
To know how it feels,
To see that warm smile,
Shine down on me,
To know that will never happen,

To see her flutter on the breeze,
And to know I can never go with her,
Though I’ve known her longer then anypony,
Though I love her more then everything,
Though I’ve cried more for her then anything,

To know she’s to awesome,
Even for me to claim,
To know just how much,
That shows you about me.

A Twilicorn's Reflection

Can be found Here.

I remember a quote, and I can't quite remember who it was from.

"I wrote a longer story because I hadn't the time to write a short one."

Poetry, along with other shorter works, have the immense burden of relaying every bit of important information in a very small timeframe, not to mention that the things that often make poems memorable are exactly the things that take time to engineer.

As for elitist, I very much so think that great poets have the right. When it comes to stories, creativity and technical knowledge can take you far and wide, but poetry takes more talent or much more work than writing prose. Either you have a virtuoso that can spout poems from their Zeus head or talented individuals that have the time and the patience to craft them.

I consider poetry to be more like a precision guided weapon of literature, whereas stories are the strategic carpet-bombing.

Poetry can still move people, if they make time for it. I once made and entire fan-fic about the following poem, one written by a guy who simply ran horse stables all of his life:

Somewhere in time's own space
there must be some sweet pastured place
where creeks sing on
and tall trees grow
some Paradise where horses go
for by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again

Violets are purple,
Red is the rose,
I think you're all jerks
And your poetry blows!
:derpytongue2:

No, but seriously, I might have to give this a shot, especially as it's the official prompt (apparently) for this month. Hmmmm...

393791

your quote comes from French philosopher and wit Blaise Pascal who apologized for writing an extreamly long letter by saying

"I had not time to write a short one."

Well, my favorite piece of poetry is "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe. I dabble from time to time in poetry. I wrote a good one about losing faith a while back... it was downright depressing. :pinkiesad2: Perhaps I'll see if I can find it again.

Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."

393749 Are you and Ravens the same person? Are you slowly conquering FIMfiction before moving on to the world!?

I dunno, but it'd make a fun story.

In answer to your question, poetry is fine, but modern poets have got the notion into their heads that poetry has no rules, which is why modern poetry is bad. Modern poetry usually isn't poetry at all, and so the average man ignores it for the same reason the average man now ignores philosophy: because our poets, like our philosophers, are too busy playing facile word games to do their jobs properly.

I do not pretend to be able to write poetry, but I suppose I might be able to send you 200 words of doggerel.

So you want poetry eh?
OK I'll give it a shot!
But i must warn you in advance
This story has no plot:

"And now our story begins
On a day that seemed quite silly
When Bic Mac went up a hill
And picked up a white lily

Standing silent he thought about pears
when Applejack shouted "what the hay?!
Start bucking the trees Mac!
You aint having a free day!!"

And he thought about apples
Cause he had no other choice
Whenever he thought about pears
He would hear his sisters voice

But you want something cheesy right?
Well I can give you just that!
So lets do something cliche
And ship Fluttershy and Mac!

So she came up the hill
And you can insert the reason here
But when Fluttershy saw Big Mac
Everything seemed so clear

Suddenly she fell in love
With this red farmer of fruit
And looking away she blushed
Cause, well you know its cute

And before you know it they kissed
and did other romantic things
but the moment their lips touched
Fluttershy spread her wings

Big Mac didn't know the reason
but most of us know probably why
And if you do'nt, ill give you a hint
No, she wasn't going to fly”

I have no idea if I did this right but heck had fun timez writing anyway :twilightsheepish:

I like this one. You need to get rid of a fair number of grammatical flubs and re-order several of your words so that the rhythm works, but dang it, I like the style and chosen subject matter.

Thumbs of approval from me.

roses are red,
my name's dave,
this poem makes no sense,
microwave.

Roses are gray,
Violets are gray,
I'm a dog.

Your eyes are just buttons, your mane's full of lint,
you smell kinda' like mothballs and not of fresh mint.
Nopony knows I took you with me that night,
to confess to it, I am up here filled with fright.

For my legs kick down trees, my back pulls our plow,
I work the orchard come rain or come snow,
be it summers or winters or autumns or springs,
but in my heart I long for much simpler things.

Not once gave I in to my desire's thirst,
everyone knows, I'm an Apple, foremost and first.
So Smartypants, please, won't you shelter my love,
from the wind and the rain and the sun high above?

On the day when my chores are complete and all done,
I will take all my courage and you and I'll run!
To that mare in the town, in the tree, with the books,
the one with the heart and the brains and *gulp* the looks.

Oh Smartypants, Smartypants, for my heart will you care,
for the day, for the day, when I ask out that mare.
It might be tomorrow, don't think I am stalling,
just not today, I hear my work, it is calling.

Nothing rhymes with Sparkle. Or with procrastination!

Poetry wasn't always an elitist thing. Poor saps were familiar enough to attempt rather poorly to scrawl "Arma et Virumque" as graffiti in ancient Italy. Longfellow was well-loved by common, everyday Americans and it wasn't uncommon to see him or other of the big-name poets of the day in homes from coast to coast. Poets are partially responsible for it being that way now, I think. They forgot that you could be very, very accessible and not be Hallmark card drivel.

I think it still could be. The world has moved on, but perhaps not far enough that poets could not catch up. But... I don't know. It sucks to be a poet and to be mostly sure that the enterprise of poetry may run out on us. It's a rather dire prediction, yeah... but I don't know. I just don't think it can survive in a world that is ever more unconcerned with it.

Also! Flowers, but anything else? I can try something. Might be fun! And does it matter what form?

Wait, did I have to fufill ALL the prompts, because if so im instadiscualified.

393797

I consider poetry to be more like a precision guided weapon of literature, whereas stories are the strategic carpet-bombing.

Best quote, ever.

394125
Flowers or something Big Mac would say, the form doesn't matter as long as It can be read in simple lined text.

394175

Of course not! Do what you can nothing more.

a flower and a red rose
some stupid feelings
and lots of prose
some funny things like sadness
that seeps through our bone
weaklings wining
about being alone
a few stupid poets are hobos
but none have a home
because home is where the heart is
and these guys have none

i call it "poets are stupid"
if your confused about the ending i said that they dont have homes because home is where the heart is and poets dont have hearts because they make a listen to their useless rambling

i didnt really use the prompts sorry!

I think I used to be good at this.
It's clear to me I'm not anymore.

393815

Thanks for that one. I knew I heard something like it.

393797

I consider poetry to be more like a precision guided weapon of literature, whereas stories are the strategic carpet-bombing.

A friend of mine would like to know if that means 'Twilight' (*shudder*) could be considered nerve gas?

395337
For a proper metaphor, the Twilight series of works would first have to be considered "literature".:raritywink:

I Can't Write Poetry

I would write some poetry, but first I must learn how to do so,
Once or twice, a witty rhyme from me, but then my eyelids dip down low,
And then ends my poetry.

Bravo!

Poetry is good.
Poets still have relevance
But they're not elite.
