    Eclipse 2024

Best of luck to everyone chasing the solar eclipse tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves. If you are close to the line of totality, it is definitely worth making the effort to get there. I blogged about how awesome it was back in 2017 (see: Pre-Eclipse Post, Post-Eclipse

    End of the Universe

I am working to finish Infinite Imponability Drive as soon as I can. Unfortunately the last two weeks have been so crazy that it’s been hard to set aside more than a few hours to do any writing…

    Imponable Update

Work on Infinite Imponability Drive continues. I aim to get another chapter up by next weekend. Thank you to everyone who left comments. Sorry I have not been very responsive. I got sidetracked for the last two weeks preparing a talk for the ATOM society on Particle Detectors for the LHC and Beyond, which took rather more of my time than I

    Imponable Interlude

Everything is beautiful now that we have our first rainbow of the season.

What is life? Is it nothing more than the endless search for a cutie mark? And what is a cutie mark but a constant reminder that we're all only one bugbear attack away from oblivion?

    Quantum Decoherence

    Happy end-of-2023 everyone.

I just posted a new story.

    EInfinite Imponability Drive
In an infinitely improbable set of events, Twilight Sparkle, Sunny Starscout, and other ponies of all generations meet at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

This is one of the craziest things that I have ever tried to write and is a consequence of me having rather more unstructured free time than usual for the last week.

Yay! New Character Tags! · 1:40pm Jan 12th, 2017

Isn’t it exciting! We’ve been waiting for years for some of these. Now we have loads of new character tags to play around with, and can now waste hours of time retagging stories, and searching through the data to answer questions like: What is the highest rated Starswirl comedy? What is the most read Principal Cinch romance?

For what it’s worth—not very much—I got to claim a few firsts here: the first writer to tag a story for Twinkleshine, Chancellor Puddinghead, and Quibble Pants. Incidentally, there are still a few unclaimed tags left. You too could be first, if you can get a story out starring Lily, Sandalwood, Parcel Post, and possibly a few others.

Interesting to note which ‘new’ ponies are most popular. Secretive characters like Moondancer and Starswirl the Bearded are stellar hits. (Should we now adopt these spellings, instead of the more usual Moon Dancer and Star Swirl?) The show-seeking Tender Taps and Troubleshoes don’t yet have a big following.

I always thought it odd that Twinkleshine doesn’t have more fans. She has a cute name, she’s clever enough to attend Celestia's school, just as pretty as any other pony, and she is the first to speak in episode one after Twilight Sparkle. At least she has a Fimfiction tag now, which is more than her friend Lemon Hearts gets.

Chancellor Puddinghead seems to be the least popular of all the Hearth’s Warming Eve cast. I found her to be a really fun character to write. She fits into the light-hearted comedy of that episode really well, but I guess, she doesn’t have a place in a serious historical epics about Princess Platinum and Commander Hurricane, which many Fimfiction authors love to write.

I faced a small problem when tagging The Equine Comedy, as we are restricted to five tags, but the story features all six of the ancient ponies of lore (Clover the Clever, Smart Cookie, Private Pansy, Puddinghead, Platinum, and Hurricane). There is no collective tag for this group. So who to leave out? Surely leaving anypony out goes against the feeling of inclusive friendship. In the end I decided to drop Pansy, as she probably wouldn’t like the extra attention anyway.

They should up the limit now that there are more character tags.

I approve of your logic for dropping Pansy.

Pretty sure that fic "All American Pony" has the Sandalwood tag down first. Apparently she was an actual canon background pony, who knew?
