Soon There Be Dragons · 12:05am Sep 30th, 2016
Hey guys,
So, remember how the intro to Home mentions a Dragon Prince? You probably don't, but it totally does. So that's happening now, but I'm having trouble thinking of a name for the guy.
An MLP-ish name would be good.
A name that references Asian dragons (any of them, including video games or comics) would be better.
A name that fits both would be PERFECT.
Obviously, puns are welcome.
Fluffles, Flame Lord of the Nineteen HellsA few taken right from the wiki page on Chinese dragons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dragon#Origin
Hong (Chinese: 虹; pinyin: hóng; Wade–Giles: hung; literally: "rainbow"), a two-headed dragon or rainbow serpent
Shen (Chinese: 蜃; pinyin: shèn; Wade–Giles: shen; literally: "giant clam"), a shapeshifting dragon or sea monster believed to create mirages
Bashe (Chinese: 巴蛇; pinyin: bāshé; Wade–Giles: pa-she; literally: "ba snake") was a giant python-like dragon that ate elephants
Teng (Chinese: 螣; pinyin: téng; Wade–Giles: t'eng) or Tengshe (simplified Chinese: 腾蛇; traditional Chinese: 騰蛇; pinyin: téngshé; Wade–Giles: t'eng-she; lit. "soaring snake") is a flying dragon without legs
I like Soaring Snake.
Huanlong- Yellow dragon of the Center from Chinese mythology
Ikuchi- Japanese river dragon
Orochi- an 8-headed dragon from Japanese mythology
Ryūjin- Japanese dragon god of the sea
Ghidora- a wyvern rival of Godzilla
Mizuki- a shape-shifting dragoness from the tale 47 Ronin
Orochimaru
Taro- fought Sinbad
Haku- a river dragon/spirit who helps guide
If you want I can use my copy of domions 4 as a random name generator for Asian dragons

Sure. Give it a shot.
Dragons? Well that might be a problem for my Guardsmen.
(Yes I'm still playing the joke that I'm only spying for an eventual Imperial invasion. Live with it)
Mei-Feng Long (or Loong)
Not quite certain what's proper but a bit of random Google poking helped me put this together.
Well, MLP Dragon names seem to be one-word (Torch, Ember, Crackle, Garble, Spike), descriptive, and often flame-based, though we don't have many canon names to work from.
First, the low-hanging fruit: Jade. One word, Asian-themed.
Fang (one word, descriptive, makes me think of the Iron Man villain Fin Fang Foom)
Ruby (call back to Spike's Fire Ruby in Secret of My Excess
Chinese Dragons are associated with water, so Tsunami could be a good name.
Well, looking at existing MLP names. We have 5 samples.
Spike, who doesn't count, because Twilight named him.
Crackle and Garble, male names, carries a pattern of ending in le, and Torch, fire based name, possibly reserved for royalty.
Princess Ember, fire based name to carry on the Royalty thing, female name.
By this logic, the Prince should named something like Stoke, Inferno, Char, Blaze, or Pyre.
And because I'm an idiot and forgot the Asian thing, there's Huǒ, which is just the Chinese SImplified word for Fire. Simple, to the point, and an object/thing as per typical MLP naming standards.
The naming gets a bit muddier if you take the comics into account. In one of the Friends Forever issues we had Mina, who, unlike most dragons pre-adolescent/adolescent dragons depicted throughout the series, bore hair and horns but lacking any sort of frill atop her head, not unlike the more common depiction of the eastern/Chinese dragon. This opens up more traditional Chinese names, as well as the Japanese ones as offered by _CheckMate_.
For that reason, I propose ShenLong/Shenron, the wish dragon of the Dragon Ball franchise, or Qin Shi Huang. the Dragon Emperor from The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

I think I've got something.
I took a bunch of fire-based words and ran it throuh an English-to-Japanese translator.
The Japanese word for "Volcano" is "Kazan."
It's not quite as clever as I was hoping for, but I like it.
4233486
Could be Kami Kazan. Literally God Volcano, but also sounds like Kamikaze.
4233486 using the name generator I got two names one for each Asian dragon pretender god chassis the , the dragon king got Takahiro and the celestial dragon got Chomei
4233614
Kamikazan!
Yes! I like it!
It's less MLP-ish than I'd hoped for, but I'll take it!
Thanks!
Tiamat is the oldest named dragon in mythology... beyond that I have no clue. And, that might be a bastardization of the name itself as Justice became Jesus and a schizophrenic bard named Myrrdin became a half fae/demon wizard named Merlin within less than 600 years. It kind of makes one wonder if the great and magnificent Shakespeare will become an infamous and unscrupulous movie producer named Cheapskate in another 500 years. Of course, by then cheapskate will mean something entirely different in much the same way percival became a legitimate name instead of the original 'pure fool.'
Do people even know Bohzo means Rabbit in algonquin?
4232922 I agree with this sentiment wholeheartedly
4234673
I don't even know what alon... alenq... that word refers to.
4234750
I was trying to be inappropriately silly. Algonquin is the language that was (is) spoken by more than a half dozen east coast native american tribes so technically anyone who was interested word origin could know what the word meant. Although Bohzo is primarily used as a colloquialism for the word idiot or clown, the clown in reference probably knew the meaning but his followers may not have.
Still, given the level of drift for Tiamat it could have been something that started and ended with the letter T or D like theo-phat or could share the name of Tublat with a mythical ape/gorilla. I think Perseus and Hercules might have been the same name at one point as well assuming Perseus wasn't shortened to Zeus. Who knows? maybe the name of the first dragon was something like booty slap.

The problem is that MLP has no Chinese backgrounds, so there's no really good middle ground. :(

Is Neighpon a canon nation or something the fandom made up? If it's canon, that implies a Japanese-like pony nation.
Also, the story premise is that Equestria's world is a ruined post-apocalyptic Earth, and many facets of pony technology and culture come from recovered human knowledge and artifacts. So in the context of the story, there could totally be scraps of Chinese lore lying around.
4236101
Really? I never got the post-apocalyptic vibe from the show... Did I miss something? Or is this just an in-universe thing for you?
4238185
I suppose I should say distantly post-apocalypse. It's just my fun little theory as to why there seem to be a lot of human technologies/tools in Equestria that don't quite make sense for ponies to have created on their own.
Shen (Chinese: 蜃; pinyin: shèn; Wade–Giles: shen; literally: "giant clam"), a shapeshifting dragon or sea monster believed to create mirages
Could call this guy Sheen, as in to shine softly.
Bashe (Chinese: 巴蛇; pinyin: bāshé; Wade–Giles: pa-she; literally: "ba snake") was a giant python-like dragon that ate elephants
Bash-y sounds kind of MLP-ish right?
The was also an Ao Shen, sounds like Ocean, again kind of MLP-ish. Will keep looking.

No, it's okay. I settled on Kamikazan.
It has the right mix of Asian-ness and goofy for my purposes.
