    Iron Cavalry

Ever since the advent of the Strider-class equine battlesuit the commanders in the 38th Company have been thinking up new tactical approaches to using their new assets. The obvious approach is to use them like the Sentinels they were modeled after: for scouting and light fire support. But the Chaos pirates already possessed Sentinels and had not gotten a new field unit in quite some time, so they

    Praying to the Dark

"You wanted to know more about us, grayskin?
Do you want to know why humans turn to Chaos?
Sometimes we convert at gunpoint. Sometimes we trade our souls for petty comforts or advantages. Sometimes we need to think that there's some kind of greater intelligence and will standing behind this cruel, merciless universe, and wish to align ourselves with it."
    Gaela smiled.

    Hello all you heresy-lovers!
I've again collected enough artwork to fill one of these blog posts, so let's get to it.

Today's feature is the Age of Iron Mascot himself, Dark Acolyte Gear Works!

Starting off with a picture of pre-augmentation Gears, after one of his many unfortunate incidents, drawn by Junne.

Character Roster (Updated) · 6:39am Nov 8th, 2023

I'm re-posting the roster with fixed links and a few updates.

This list will be expanded as necessary when new characters of import are created, or when readers bug me to include someone I forgot.

Iron Warriors

Solon
Rank: Warsmith
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Astartes (extreme daemonic corruption and cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Physics and Warp technomancy, as well as numerous disciplines of conventional and exotic engineering
Wargear: Customized heavy chassis with integrated reactive armor systems, heavy servo claw, integrated heavy bolters, primary weapon uplink (note – Solon changes and updates weapons often based on the tactical situation, resources at hand, or just his own personal whimsy; because of this it is not possible to determine standard armament)
History: The long-suffering master of the 38th Company, Solon is a Warsmith who tends to inspire groans rather than terror. Mild-tempered and almost suspiciously sane, his mind is always either on his inventions or the success of his pirate fleet, which must maintain superior material intake and minimal losses to return sufficient supplies back home. To that end, Solon employs a formidable Dark Mechanicus division within his fleet and deplores the unnecessary attrition that characterizes most Chaos armies. He also shows more than a passing interest in the morale and readiness of the mortal helpers that work for the Chaos Space Marines, a practice that has long fallen out of favor in the Eye of Terror.
Solon is somewhat fascinated by the equines of Centaur III, particularly the alicorns. He has developed something of a rivalry with Princess Celestia and bonded particularly well with Princess Luna, much to his embarrassment.

Sliver
Rank: Vice Commander
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Astartes (moderate daemonic corruption)
Specialization: War strategy, siege tactics
Wargear: Daemonic terminator armor, viral scourge plague ejector, siege hammer
History: An ancient commander with a soft spot for his troops, Sliver is loyal and honest, which arguably makes him a very bad fit culturally for the 38th Company and perhaps the entire Iron Warriors Legion. A respected commander and fearsome combatant, he is often relied upon to concoct plans of attack or bail out others when theirs fail.
Sliver detests Centaur III and almost all of its inhabitants, but some equines have managed to earn his grudging tolerance, if not his affection.

Tellis
Rank: Chaos Lord
Cult: Khorne
Physiology: Astartes (minor daemonic corruption)
Specialization: Aerial infantry assault and close combat
Wargear: Daemonic flight armor with integrated lightning claws
History: A fanatical killer who finds excessive joy in his faith, Tellis developed an outrageous and distinctly immature sense of humor as he lost his grip on sanity. Probably the deadliest single warrior in all of the 38th Company, he is nonetheless regarded as a highly unreliable shock trooper and a detriment to his masters’ more delicate battle plans.
Tellis absolutely loves ponies, and shows a surprising degree of patience and reluctance to harm them.

Dest
Rank: Pilot
Cult: None
Physiology: Daemonically possessed Astartes (moderate cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Vehicle driver and close combat specialist
Wargear: Psycho-reactive integrated power armor shell with daemonic estril core
History: An Imperial Fist Scout who was captured by the Iron Warriors, Dest was handed off to the 38th Company because his previous affiliation sat poorly with his commanders. On Centaur III he was possessed by a daemon, Vel, and was extensively modified by the Dark Mechanicus. Having been released to fight off an Ork incursion, he has returned to his regular roster duties, and the Mechanicus has declined to recover their experiment.
Dest seems to enjoy the presence of the equines and Centaur III in general. He finds their naïve kindness and awe of him pleasing rather than suspicious.

Serith
Rank: High Sorcerer
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Unique – Psychic essence is contained within an internal device and it motivates the power armor and receives sensory input
Specialization: Mental manipulations and telepathy
Wargear: Power armor, psykant occulus, force halberd
History: A member of the Thousand Sons who fell out with his leaders and was sold like chattel. He was eventually purchased by the 38th Company. Once there, he conducted an experiment to create a spell that would restore the Thousand Sons’ infamous Rubric Marines to their original bodies. The experiment backfired, disintegrating him. Solon recovered and restored Serith’s spirit and created a working body for him to inhabit; a favor for which the Sorcerer remains profoundly ungrateful.
Serith likes unicorns and alicorns, treating them with a fascinated deference that jars with the open contempt he has for other ponies. He treats non-psychic humans no better, and only grants the Iron Warriors respectful civility with great reIuctance.

Kessler [Deceased]
Rank: Warpsmith Primus
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Astartes (minor daemonic corruption, heavy cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Logistics and extraction
Wargear: Power armor, plasma pistol, power axe, semi-sentient mechatendrils
History: A disgraced Warpsmith responsible for overseeing a disastrous experiment on his last posting, Kessler was assigned to the 38th Company as punishment and was killed in action during the insurgency instigated by the changelings.

Tolken
Rank: Armsmaster
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Astartes (moderate cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: All melee, light, and heavy infantry weapons common to Astartes combat units
Wargear: Power armor, relic plasma gun (Twilight blew it up), power mace
History: An esteemed warrior and gifted trainer who has wielded or at least touched every weapon in the Imperial and Chaos armories capable of being replicated (and several that are not). Assigned to the 38th Company after being blamed for a training accident during his previous posting that killed a young Chaos Lord and possible rival to leadership. It is unknown if Tolken really was responsible, but at least there have been no significant training mishaps under Sliver’s supervision.

Dark Mechanicus

Kaelith
Rank: Dark Magos
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Human (minor daemonic corruption, extreme cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Logistics, salvage and recovery
Wargear: Unique exoskeleton with personal shielding, melta cutters, and laser matrix
History: The highest ranking Techpriest in the 38th Company, Kaelith is a brilliant and enterprising leader for the combat engineers and scavengers of the 38th Company. He resents his position under Solon’s leadership, but it is not clear whether his disdain for the Warsmith comes from personal distaste or a seething jealousy over Solon’s creations.

Gaela
Rank: Dark Techpriest
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Human (heavy cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Xenotechnology
Wargear: Power armor, power axe, integrated ion blaster, advanced servo rig
History: A Techpriest captured from the Imperium who turned to Chaos for the chance to study alien artifacts and devices. Very loyal to Warsmith Solon, she may be the one human or post-human Astartes that genuinely trusts his leadership.
Gaela seems to think very little of ponies, treating them with a low hostility that occasionally crosses into open threats. The feeling is very much not mutual; Gaela is one of the most popular humans in the fleet among the equines.

Carmed
Rank: Dark Techpriest
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Human (heavy cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Augmentation, cybernetics, and medical biology
Wargear: Biologis exoframe armor, power surgicals
History: One of numerous heretical Techpriests that conduct experiments and labor for the benefit of the Dark Powers, Carmed specializes in building sophisticated augments that operate better than the limbs or organs they replace. Since landing on Centaur III, he has shown an unusual enthusiasm for testing his creations on the natives, and has designed several models of equine-base cybernetics.

Sheraan
Rank: Dark Acolyte
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Human (moderate cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Metallurgy, chemical processing
Wargear: Carapace exoframe, laspistol
History: A young cultist kidnapped from the Imperium and turned to Chaos, Sheraan is one of numerous lower-ranked tech-cultists who help repair, salvage, and process looted goods and battlefield salvage into useful war material. Has developed a distinct distaste for equines that exceeds the cold contempt of most of his peers and veers into the irrational.

Gear Works
Rank: Dark Acolyte
Cult: Dark Mechanicus
Physiology: Earth pony (heavy cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Mechanical engineering
Wargear: Hybrex-pattern optical veil and sub-strata model 388 dataspike tendril
History: Raised in Canterlot, Gears Works was more enthusiastic than most ponies about the prospect of alien invaders setting up shop in Equestria. A ravenous collector of machines and information about them, Gear Works was quite enamored with the Dark Mechanicus long before an accident left him in need of cybernetic augmentation.
After receiving extensive bionics developed by Dark Techpriest Carmed, Gear Works joined the Dark Mechanicus. Since then he has been subject to several more accidents (and occasionally direct, unprovoked violence) that warranted further bionic enhancement and upgrades.
Gear Works was rewarded with Dark Acolyte rank after helping rescue the central manufactorum complex from being sabotaged and destroyed by Lord Tellis.

Cultists and Mercenaries

Wyatt Daniels
Rank: Rifleman
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Human
Specialization: Small arms
Wargear: Carapace armor, Tau rail rifle and pulse pistol
History: A fugitive from a doomed planet in the Imperium, Wyatt Daniels became a mercenary infantryman while young and traveled the stars over the course of several wars. Eventually he joined a company of privateers and found himself under contract with Chaos raiders.
Daniels is cynical and amoral, but easy enough to get along with. He rather likes ponies, and is one of the more popular humans among the equines.

Cyrus Gnoss [Deceased]
Rank: General
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Human (minor cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Battalion tactics and fortification doctrine
Wargear: Power sword, bolt pistol
History: An old pirate that managed the 38th Company’s human soldiers for over a decade. Never quite respected by the Astartes, nonetheless Gnoss was capable enough that he was trusted with a degree of autonomy that few Chaos Legions allow their mortal servants. Cyrus Gnoss was killed in action during the battle of Ponyville.

Kerrik Harlin
Rank: General
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Human (minor cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Armor tactics and heavy assault doctrine
Wargear: Power sword, laspistol
History: A Colonel under General Gnoss’s command, he was promoted to General after the battle of Ponyville. Favors armored spearheads and vehicle support over light infantry formations and combined arms tactics.

Erin Whyd
Rank: Unspecified
Cult: None
Physiology: Human
Specialization: Security, survival
Wargear: Unspecified
History: A conscript to the Imperial Guard turned refugee, turned guard to an underhive slum, turned refugee AGAIN, turned pirate. Life isn't easy for most Imperial citizens, but Erin's luck found her employed by a Genestealer Cult and it was only by the machinations of strange sorceries and possibly daemonic forces that she managed to get out alive. Being decent with a gun and knowing when it wouldn't be enough makes her solid mercenary material, but she's somewhat hesitant to sign up to another corruptive, malicious army, even if Chaos is more honest about it.

Virgil
Rank: Priest (ecclesial hierarchy undetermined)
Cult: Chaos
Physiology: Human (indeterminate daemonic corruption)
Specialization: Obscure cult lore and divination
Wargear: None
History: Largely a mystery even to his masters, Virgil travels with the 38th Company and administers sermons and rites to the Dark Gods. Although he possesses substantial respect among the fleet, he cannot be said to be a leader; he has no obvious goals other than rote religious service and makes no use of his potential influence. Daemons refuse to harm him (or simply feel no desire to do so) and the Astartes treat him lightly. It’s unclear if this is a learned reaction, or instinctive. The ponies, for their part, find him annoying and unhelpful.

Leonard Kruss [Deceased]
Rank: Priest
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Human (light daemonic corruption)
Specialization: Horticulture, in particular parasitic vegetation
Wargear: None
History: A senior priest of Nurgle who led ceremonies in the fetid temples of the 38th Company, Kruss lost his life after being kidnapped by a changeling spy.

Mantis
Role: Cabal Hierophant
Cult: ???
Physiology: Unicorn (mutant genus; unknown source)
Specialization: Warp arcana and Chaos rituals
Wargear: None
History: Nobody's quite sure where Mantis hails from, why he left there, or how it is he came to join the 38th Company. Surely his employment is most fortuitous, as he has a considerable talent for and suspiciously deep knowledge of Chaos arcana. He speaks with familiarity of daemons and does not treat the Warp as a twisted, unfathomable realm a world apart from the practice of magic like nearly all unicorns do. Since joining the Company he has eagerly devoted his time toward psychic and arcane research, exploring through the vast knowledge sitting mostly untouched in the Iron Warriors' databanks and rendering his own experiments and formulations. Since his employment he has swiftly taken control of the unicorn cabal, a collection of psykers conscripted for the Iron Warriors' fleet. The ponies had been mostly languishing since the battle of Ponyville, as their talents were not widely respected and the leadership did not always have the creativity to employ them in their military endeavors. Since Mantis took charge, the group has been rapidly improving their skills and expanding their knowledge of Chaos lore. Curiously, Mantis places a great emphasis on safety when employing his rituals, and has modified many such magics so that they no longer require killing something to work effectively. The Iron Warriors are quietly supportive of these efforts, as attrition among their psykers has always been a drag on their utility.
Although he is obviously a powerful magus himself, it is not clear at all how strong Mantis is or what his combat capabilities are; unlike many other sorcerers, he does not boast or make displays of his skills. Few imagine that his talents are limited to the library, however.

Equiss Forces

Poison Kiss
Rank: Squad Master – Phage Squadron
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Unicorn pony (Moderate daemonic corruption)
Specialization: Plague sorcery
Wargear: Power armor, boltgun
History: The leader of Phage Squadron and more or less the reason it exists. Poison Kiss and her friends were infected after borrowing the Contagion Apocrypha, an ancient Chaos relic that promptly saw them infected and mutated. Poison Kiss is haughty and vain, but believes in her cause and faith sincerely and has considerable affection for the humans she works and fights with.
Poison Kiss uses Chaos magic to good effect, and can spit strange bone needles with paralytic toxins.

Breezy Blight
Rank: Cult warrior – Phage Squadron
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Pegasus pony (Moderate daemonic corruption and light cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Chemical warfare
Wargear: Power armor with integrated boltgun
History: Breezy Blight joined Phage Squadron soon after joining the 38th Company, when she and her friends were infected by daemonic magic. Somewhat less pious and confident than the other pony soldiers, Breezy is nonetheless Phage Squadron’s most capable fighter.
Aside from her aerial mobility and boltgun, her powerful, mutated lungs allow Breezy to spit jets of corrosive poison or obscuring spores.

Rot Blossom
Rank: Cult warrior – Phage Squadron
Cult: Nurgle
Physiology: Earth pony (moderate daemonic corruption)
Specialization: Bio warfare
Wargear: Power armor with integrated boltgun
History: Another member of Phage Squadron who was infected by the Apocrypha Contagion and promptly took up Nurgle worship. Blossom comes off as meek and shy most of the time, and is quick to defer to the judgment of her superior. When angered, though, she has a surprising temper, and her means of fighting can be quite insidious and grotesque.
Blossom hosts colonies of parasitic insects in her body and armor hives. While many are merely a painful irritant to be used as a diversion in battle, the infestation includes a few types of parasites capable of spreading devastating illness over time or causing more exotic and extraordinary effects.

Shifty Sights
Rank: Cult Sorcerer
Cult: Tzeentch
Physiology: Unicorn (moderate daemonic mutation)
Specialization: Tactical precognition
Wargear: Enchanted cloak, storm crystal
History: A very mysterious pony, it’s unclear when Shifty joined the 38th Company and under what circumstances. She was all but unknown before joining the cult of Tzeentch sorcerers, which granted her current powers and mutations. Many human troops still dislike working with her and the other Dark Mages, as their behavior is much closer to that of unstable human psykers than other unicorns.
Shifty can see the immediate future, although it’s seen as a spectrum of possibilities rather than a determinate vision. The further ahead in time she observes, the further the possibilities split, rendering the ability less reliable. She’s also skilled in blink teleports and uses wychsight to detect targets.

Dusk Blade
Rank: Lunar Lieutenant
Cult: None
Physiology: Bat pony
Specialization: Infiltration and assassination
Wargear: Carapace armor, adamantium hoofblades, splinter rifle
History: An officer of some (poor) repute in Princess Luna’s guards, Dusk found himself selected to be conscripted by the 38th Company to fight off the Ork invasion. He’s taken to the posting better than most, as his generally amoral behavior and predilection for violence is better suited to life among the Chaos Space Marines than it ever was in Canterlot. Hopelessly in love with Twilight Sparkle, and considers himself Gear Work’s best friend (the feeling is not mutual in either case).

Support Personnel

Norris Delgan
Role: Trademaster
Cult: None
Physiology: Human (minor cybernetic augmentation)
Specialization: Commerce
Wargear: Twin power swords, Eldar shield bracers
History: A noble driven out of the Imperium by the Inquisition, Delgan is an odd fit for a Chaos war fleet. The man revels in idle luxury and wealth, standing at arm’s length from the cults and the destruction that Chaos wreaks on its victims. The Dark Mechanicus in particular resents him, as they would otherwise have almost total control of the fleet’s internal economy. Delgan’s services are very popular with the mortals, however, including the space pirates that the fleet frequently engages with.
Delgan adores the ponies of Centaur III, although the traits he seems to appreciate most are their taste for luxuries and their helpful naïveté.

Claret Heartthrob
Role: Medicae
Cult: None
Physiology: Unicorn pony
Specialization: Battlefield surgery, biogenetics
Wargear: “Savior” medicae surgical pack
History: A Canterlot doctor who joined the 38th Company out of fascination with its bionics and secrets of genetic enhancement. Claret is a surprisingly hardy unicorn who doesn’t flinch at the gore and misery of warfare. While the secrets that sparked her curiosity in the first place mostly remain out of reach even within the fleet, she finds the day-to-day life of diagnosing and healing daemonic mutations and terrible combat wounds plenty fulfilling. Hates being mistaken for a nurse.

Wind Chime
Role: Administration and Logistics
Cult: None
Physiology: Pegasus pony
Specialization: Community engagement and interior decorating
Wargear: Hexis-pattern logis visor with wrist input driver
History: One of many equines that sought out residence in Ferrous Dominus out of curiosity and fascination, Wind Chime took to the bizarre technological wonders of the alien invaders even better than most and became a service administrator. She was less enthralled with the devastating pollution and evil blight that surrounded her new home, and her efforts to mitigate it through community activism very nearly wiped out the entire manufactorum.

Jewel Bracer
Role: Personnel Management
Cult: None
Physiology: Earth pony
Specialization: Psychology and negotiation
Wargear: Explorator 9 respirator unit
History: Jewel Bracer is a somewhat strange pony whose cutie mark and special talent never led her to settle into a single career and she instead spent her adulthood in various odd jobs. She’s done simple labor, therapy, upper management, and even worked as part-time security while living in Equestria. Once the Iron Warriors decided to make Ferrous Dominus a permanent colony, Jewel set out for the fortress-factory to take the oddest jobs of all: the ones in space. Despite her dry and blunt demeanor Jewel is highly empathetic and quite persuasive, which leads her to favor professions that deal with ponies and people.

Scoops and Kilroy
Role: Propaganda Broadcasting and Entertainment
Cult: None/Chaos
Physiology: Pegasus pony/Human
Specialization: Journalism/Shouting
Wargear: None/Laspistol
History: Scoops is a rookie journalist who worked for the Cloudsdale Times previous to her current employment. Her big break came when she was the first camera on the ground after Ferrous Dominus was attacked by the Tau, and soon all sorts of papers were clamoring for her pictures of the alien fortress (as they were often scared to send photographers of their own). When relations between Ferrous Dominus and Equestria normalized, so did her career, and she was recalled back to Cloudsdale. Instead, she pitched the idea of a broadcasting body within the city to explain the motivations of the alien invaders to the outside public, inform the citizenry of current events, and sell more noosphere data spires to pony settlements. And so the Chaos News Network was born. Scoops was promptly hired to be the host of the flagship program. Kilroy, her cultist co-host, was reassigned from his combat command, as his superiors noted that his enthusiasm for violence substantially outweighed his talent for it.

Suuna
Role: Personal "Assistant"
Cult: None
Physiology: Human
Specialization: Unspecified
Wargear: None
History: Suuna is a slave. Captured in one of the 38th Company's many raids of Imperial space, she was pressed into hard labor along with numerous peers and fellow citizens, her life becoming nothing but a series of long, backbreaking shifts followed by imprisonment and transit from one work site to the next. Until, one day, she met a certain arrogant blue unicorn, and her life changed forever...
Truth be told, it isn't at all clear how much her status has changed between serving the Iron Warriors and serving Trixie Lulamoon, but the latter is by leaps and bounds the superior arrangement. There's very little labor, no physical abuse, and Trixie isn't (very) unpleasant a master. Although she's clearly developed some genuine affection for the pony who plucked her from a grisly and miserable fate, Suuna may yet aspire to be more than a servant. Nobody asked her, though.

A pic of Virgil, i didn't expected to see that.

For some reason i always imagined him as more "Saitama-ish"

I actually have another one but it got taken down from Derpibooru (probably because there's no pony in it).
Human OCs

Orchid Flair does not get a profile?

No, she lives and works in Canterlot, so she's not meaningfully part of the fleet. The Company just pays her.
