Calm Wind

We writers do not speak. We do not hear. We have no songs. We have no pictures. We only have scripture. From words we bring images. From words we bring emotion. From words we bring life.

So... regarding PTH Chapter length... · 10:27pm Sep 27th, 2016

"I'm sexier than you." "Oh you think so?"

I'm kind of... heh... regretting saying that i plan to end part 3 on chapter 140 because, as im sur you've noticed, that has bottlenecked my content on my outlines and caused the past few chapters to be ABSURDLY long (129 and 130 were likely going to be that long either way, but i felt i could have avoided it with some others).

I'm considering kicking the claim that 140 will end part 3 and just going until whenever it goes, thus giving me the freedom to break up the chapters going forward into smaller, more manageable bits. This won't add too many chapters to the pile and it won't effect my outline at all, it will just give me some extra breathing room if i choose to do so. this will come in particular handy when i get to the part 3 finale... because the outline i have for that chapter is... well... twice as large as my outline for chapter 129 in terms of content.

Of course, i wanted to consult everyone here first per usual. I know the general answer is 'whatever i want to do' but i still wanted to ask. Would you mind if i dropped the original plan of 140 being the end of part three and broke up the chapters into smaller chapters (so like... 10-15k words instead of 25-20K)? Or should i just keep going the way i have the past month or so with the behemoths?

(Also for a chapter update: i'm currently 9K words into chapter 133, so it's coming along.)

Yes! Please please please please please please please please pleeeeeaasse shorten the chapter length. That would be the most wonderful thing EVER!!!

whatever i want to do

What he said.

idc as long as read something from you it will be fun

Someone (Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland?) said "Start at the beginning. Continue until the end. Then, stop."

I feel the same way about chapters. Just keep going until you hit a break point, then stop. Don't worry about an arbitrary size.

If it's 5,000 words or 30,000 just let dramatic necessity dictate the length.

I feel that you should keep writing part 3 until you find a chapter that feels like it could work as the finale for part 3. This is what I feel you should do.

Personally, I vote for the long chapters... But I'm a weirdo like that... :pinkiecrazy:

I say fit was fits. If a chapter needs to be long, make it long. If not, go ahead and break it down.

one of the things i love about this story is the absurd length of chapters. it makes it unique in a way and its funny when people say these long chapters and "normal" length.:derpytongue2:

Im fine either way

I know this is probably too long ago for some of you kids, but in my day there was no fangle interwebs with no chapter updates. If you wanted the next part of a story it was a complete book that you bought from a shop. And generally you had to wait up to a year maybe even two for each one.
So i do not mind on chapter length or how many there are. As long as content and quality do not suffer. I ask that you prioritise that.

I vote for long chapters and wait times. Then again, I'm a really fast reader (having a degree in history with a minor in English will do that) and did the midnight camp out in full costume for the last three Harry Potter books, so my opinion may be the exception rather than the norm.

YESSSS So soon...err than later. I know that last chapter is REALLY hard to think about as a whole.

I can say from working with a few authors never set a point for a ark to end simply turn your muse lose and see ware it leads you.

4229913 How the hell did I end up with two dislikes?

Pfft. You wanna break it up, break it up. You wanna stick with 140 being that last chapter of the 3rd arc, so that. We are your devoted readers, and whatever is good for you is good for us.

I've always said that chapters are exactly as long or short as they need to be, and the same goes for parts. Declaring that a part will end on chapter 140 will not change the story at all, but it will force you to play with your chapter contents to make it conform. The purpose of a chapter is to bracket related events. If you find yourself putting two sets of brackets into one chapter, perhaps you need to reconsider.

Actual length is not of any great concern to me, although you do have a talent for posting them just as I need to go to bed. Ah, the sleep I've lost! :rainbowlaugh:

I personally prefer shorter chapters, otherwise I get overwhelmed by the events and forget the little details, also like i've said before im slow at reading and it usually takes me 2 hours and a half to finish a 30k word chapter.:derpytongue2:

Honestly, I feel like you should write your chapters as long as they feel like they need to be. If that means we have a chapter that could double as a mini-book, then I'd read all of that and likely grab popcorn while I do! If you end up with a shorter chapter, that's fine! It's really just all about what you feel is best.

Heck, I know I end up with chapters that are just massive (By my standards, next to yours they're puny...) simply because that chapter needed to be that lenght!

But, enough of my rambling, you do what you feel is best, and we'll keep sitting on the edge of our seats!

Your free to do what you want to do bro. Though smaller chapters will be more manageable for me. Since im pretty much 7 chapters behind and staring at this 31K monster and all I have to aid in my victory over this chapter is a undying will, a weekend with nothing to do, and the magical powers of the internet. I will endure.

Pretty much just make the chapter long or short as it needs to be and if it stops at 140, cool but don't sweat it.

Of course, you could always do chapter 139, 139.25, 139.5, 139.75, 39 and 9/10, 140! ^-^ (or however many times you need to pad out the length.)

Whatever is more convenient for you man, I'd still read it if I had to wait years for each chapter tbh

I mean, I prefer the longer chapters but the truth of the matter is that, you don't need to increase or decrease the length. It's how much content you want to be in one chapter. If it's long, it's long. If it's short, it's short.

And I love how 20k-30k word chapters are normal xD

I think you should make chapters as long or as short as the plot demands. IDC about how long they ate so long as the quality does not suffer.

4230834 i agree with ya there. Whatever makes you comfortable Calm, but to be fair, as of late 20-25k chapter have been... very common (one particular chaptwr that more or less gave be a heart attack was specifically almost as long as one of the last two stories with almost 50k words with like 300 words until it DID reach the ammount XD ) so yeah. But i'm guilty of bein the inbetween person as always. XD

But longer chapter have always been my favourite to read whilst waiting for my nails to dry XD and shoeter ones to go through the whole thig and *sort of* edit myself cause why not. XD

I like the longer chapters, but feel free to drop the plan of part 3 ending on pg. 140. I don't really mind the format, I just reeeeeaaaaally like the story. Yay!
