Did somebody ask for more Dekaranger? Because I'm pretty sure nobody asked for more Gavan. · 12:00pm Aug 26th, 2016
For whatever bizarre reason, Toei has decided to float a movie next year (yes, this was announced a year in advance, which is very strange for Toei) involving Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (the very first Super Sentai Series I saw in full) and the Metal Heroes character Toei has a bizarre hard-on for: Space Sheriff Gavan.
I just...I dunno dood.
It actually looks like it could be good.
I like Gavan... as a concept. Space Sheriff sounds like one of the most badass things ever made, without making it cringy. And while I haven't seen original, I'll give it a benefit of the doubt that it was pretty cool for it's time, having spawned an entire new line of toku shows. That said, the new movies were lackluster. Very, very lackluster. They got better later with Sharivan and Shaider, who were much smaller in scale, therefore able to tell a better stories, but it's still not quite it. The crossover with Dekaranger sounds like a good idea, but I'm afraid Gavan's side will drag it down.

Huh, a VR Trooper, haven't seen one of those in decades. Or is that Beetleborg? Something like that (sorry, I know those two Saban series were based on something like this, but that's still my first reaction at seeing that kind of helmet). I thought the Metal Hero franchise had faded away years ago. I didn't even know they were making more Dekaranger stuff (short of a Super Sentai anniversary or something).
4172741 It's kinda come out of nowhere, yeah. Nobody was expecting a new Dekaranger movie.
4172741 VR Troopers and Beetleborgs were both based on other Metal Heroes series - Troopers used footage from Choujinki Metalder (sixth Metal Heroes series) and Jikuu Senshi Spielban (fifth Metal Heroes series) for its first season, and when the Metalder footage ran out, switched to using Space Sheriff Shaider (third Metal Heroes series) alongside the Spielban footage; when the footage from both series ran out, VR Troopers was ended. After that, Beetleborgs was adapted from Juukou B-Fighter and its sequel series B-Fighter Kabuto (the fourteenth and fifteenth Metal Heroes series, respectively).
Incidentally, this upcoming crossover was foreshadowed during the Goseiger/Gokaiger crossover five years ago: a pamphlet given away at the film's release revealed that Doggie Kruger (DekaMaster) and Retsu Ichijouji/Gavan were old friends. However, no mention of it was ever made in any other media.
