Reminder to readers: Group folder etiquette · 4:53pm Aug 5th, 2016

Gentle reminder to all readers:

I get that when you're excited about a story and want to share it, you can get a little overeager to add a story to group folders.

But there are two basic rules of etiquette you need to follow that will save both group admins AND writers a lot of headaches:

1 Check to see if the story's already been added to the group you want to add it to. Every story's page should show you what groups that story is already "featured" in. It's a little hard to miss it, it's on the right-hand side under the "similar/author/also liked" sidebar. If the group you want to add the story to is already listed there, you really don't need to do anything--the author or someone else has already taken care of it, so it's best to leave it be.

2. Check to make sure the folder you're adding it to is appropriate for the story. This is important. Don't add a T-rated story with the Sex tag to a folder for E-rated stories! Don't add a story without the Adventure tag to a folder labeled Adventure! All you're doing is causing a headache for the group admins and writers because they have to sort it out, and 60% of the time, a group admin who notices the faux pas is going to blame the writer, not the person who actually added it. This can and HAS led to writers being unfairly banned from groups because of something stupid somebody else did.

So pay careful attention when you're adding another user's stories to group folders.

(This blog post is tagged for Sunset Vs. because I've seen it pop up in the wrong folders on groups I'm subscribed to twice now in my feed.)

1. What if a story qualifies for multiple folders, but is only in one folder of the group?

4133320 Then you should check the group's rules to see if there's a REASON for that. Some groups have a "only one folder" rule, and some have an "all appropriate folders" rule. It's kind of a pain in the ass for writers when they do the initial addspam, and I will admit that I generally don't want to bother checking each group's rules to see if it's a one-only or must-all group, so I just add it to one folder per group and let God sort out the rest unless it's a group like The Writer's Group where I know multi-add is OK.

I can only imagine the swirling storm of torment the admins have to go through every time this happens.:unsuresweetie:
