I've done some brain storming. Forgive me if I ramble.
Hie fics: Specifically, when cross cultural relationships have been established.
A fic that looks at the reality of pony/human interaction, from a sociological and political perspective.
I believe there is a wealth of material to mine here. From the light hearted to the very serious. One shot, to full on saga.
Fics that have attempted the above, in my view, have often concentrated on humans being superior/ponies inferior or vica versa. Don't get me wrong, not knocking them, just havn't come across anything more nuanced.
Couple of ideas:
Have been watching the American adaptation of "House of Cards "...Francis Underwood is President of the United States, and totally immoral...
In such a senario, what impact/influence would both societies have upon one another for good or for ill?
Dr Who/Whooves crash lands in Equestria, (fairly standard thus far), discovers first contact has been established between his favorite species the horribly magnificent humans and ponies.
Only this was not meant to happen...
Should he meddle?

Oh I've written some of those, as you have commented on "The Folly of Man." :P A friend of mine made an AMAZING Conversion Bureau fic from the crosscultural perspective called "First Contact" i believe. He doesn't have it on fimfiction though and it's on the old EquestriaDaily Conversion Bureau megapost. His name is Purple Prose.

I completely skipped that phase in the fandom where those kind of stories were being written. :P As a result, I'm not inclined to write such stories myself. I do, however, focus on cultural differences and sources of cultural conflict.
Oh my gosh, I both love and hate House of Cards. Such an amazing show, but such horrible people...who are based on real horrible people in power...
I would love to see how such a situation would affect the pony world in a story. Another idea! :D /)

The story I linked to is honestly a crack fic, but like everything Dorky does it's still surprisingly coherent. I've taken a look over his notes, it turns surprisingly serious.
And the entire purpose of my "Diaries..." fic is because I got annoyed at how immortals seemed to like painting giant targets on their back for the angry peasants to rage at. One of the reasons I absolutely love "Retired to Equestria" because said immortal is actually smart about it.

Either today or tomorrow, I feel I'm finally gonna read a Dorkness story. I'd say you've interested me enough to want to pick a really good fic of theirs. I'll probably choose one late tonight when I'm more likely to be in the mood for reading :) You're really good at pushing their stuff. :)
I like smart chracters, so that sounds like something I'd like to read. I'm actually in the process of writing an "immortal" character for a separate story (non-mlp, but could be mlp if I wanted) so perhaps I'll get some inspiration. :)

The protag of Retired is also a massive troll, which is why I'd read it 5 times despite the fif being so very very dead.
Now that I can actually answer I think I will!
A story where some human basejumps off Canterlot (either form the castle if its right on the edge or off the edge of the city itself over that impressive drop)
One where emergency services is displaced with on-hand equipment (fire-fighter, ambulance etc)
A Zootopia crossover wouldnt go amiss here, after-all MLP can be crossed with damn near ANYTHING
A Ponies on Earth story crossed with 'The Division' just to see were the concept of magic can change things (preferably for the better)
So many more things, but some I wish to keep quiet for now

Also, I haven't played "The Division" but it would be an intriguing crossover idea from what I know about the game. Unless you're referencing a TV show, which I do not know about :P
