Time travel? Meh, at least it was better than how Sonic 06' did it.
Also, alternate Equestria? You KNOW Hasbro has been looking at some Fallout MLP fanfics. Come on, I mean - Rainbow Dash with metal wings? (which is admittedly friggin' awesome if I must say)

Not my favorite episode, but it introduced a lot of interesting ideas like time travel and alternate timelines. So I can't really complain to much. :)
3581189 This episode actually has one very interesting factor to it though that you may not have noticed right away...
It shows that the writers CAN introduce some darker elements to the show. I mean, how do you think Rainbow lost her wing? Or what happened to her ear for god's sake?
These writers have shown me that they have a decent idea of how dark they can make things without straying too far off track. So could you imagine if they introduce a villain who acted more...malicious? I'm not saying a villain who kills anyone, but at least hurts them in some way. How would Twilight or any of her friends react to somepony/something who physically hurts one of their friends?
Also people are saying that Starlight Glimmer will now be one of the Mane Six, but I doubt it. I think she'll go on her way to meet her own set of friends. I didn't like Starlight before and...I'm still not warming to her that much, but it's slightly better terms on the plus side.
3581260 The season finale just didn't click with me for one reason or another. I admittedly liked it better the second time I watched it (I think it is one of those episodes that gets better with each viewing) but it still isn't my favorite. Overall, I haven't been very impressed with season five. Lots of writers left the show and I'm sorry to say that it shows with the lack of quality in episodes like Made in Manehattan or the worst episode ever made, Princess Spike. That being said, there were really only five episodes this season that I didn't like. The rest were pretty good and I enjoyed watching them. Season 4 is still my favorite season, but season five is a close second on my favorite list.
Just like every other finale, this one is getting a lot of mixed reception.
Some really love it, like me. Others really seem to hate it.
I love it because of how smart Starlight was, as well as the fact that she's a lot powerful than you'd expect a non-alicorn to be.
It'll be interesting to see where they take her character.
3581268 I've been a bit mixed too to be honest, but I do like how the writers here are experimenting a bit. Time travel is something I don't really think any show should do because it's VERY easy to miss important points and time paradoxes. Still, it seems to have been handled well here, kept as simple as could be.
I just like this episode/s for the darker turn they placed, the alternate Equestria and everything. It was kinda interesting to see just how vital that one Sonic Rainboom really was to everything. However I really don't want to see too much of Starlight in later episodes. I'm still not warming up to her and I think she's better off referenced in future installments.
I kinda just wanna see one villain who can't be tackled as easily as the previous. Like, what options remain for you when the enemy has no intention of reforming ever at all? I'd like to see how that would work. Or at least let's see the Changelings again. I think there's some potential for a story there with them. If the comics are to be considered canon, I think they're all trapped underneath the old castle or something...with a Pinkie bot constantly asking them riddles...
Wow, if they do ever get the Changelings back Pinkie's gonna be the first target for sure. XD
And hey, these writers are at least competent enough to make a fairly decent bunch of episodes. Give them a little time and they'll eventually find their styles.
And if not, there's always the fan content.
3581349 She's not powerful in my opinion. Really, it seems that almost any unicorn could do what she did. It's all just about reading spells and learning how to utilize those spells, or having the willpower to do so. I think that most unicorns just choose outright not to delve into such magics, or are otherwise unable to use that level of magic without a lot of training or focusing of their magical prowess.
Really it's the unicorns who are the OP characters of this universe. I hope Starlight doesn't interfere with the show too much from this point on. I'm hoping there'll at least be a darker villain soon. This show looks like it'll need a character who'll really leave a mark on our heroes.
3581401 While I do see where you're coming from regarding unicorns, the most we've seen unicorns that aren't Trixie, Starlight, or pre MMC Twilight use is telekinesis.
The unicorn closest to Twilight in power before Starlight was Trixie. And even she needed the Alicorn Amulet to get that boost.
In other words, I think the implication is that Starlight is the most powerful non-Alicorn in Equestria.
As for the impact Starlight would have, I'm pretty sure she's a mane character now. The dialogue just before the song heavily implies that she's Twilight's new apprentice. Plus, there are a few other pieces of evidence:
1. Starlight was in the "center" of that final shot, with the mane 6 and Spike surrounding her.
2. Starlight's position in the season 5 character poster implies she'd eventually join the mane 6.
3. GM Berrow's next book was revealed to be about Starlight, and the synopsis says "A original My Little Pony chapter book featuring one of Twilight Sparkle's most notorious pupils".
And remember, the last two were revealed before the finale even aired.
The only two ways I can think of that we could have an antagonist darker than Tirek or Starlight are:
1. If the new villain wanted to wipe out all of existence.
2. Twilight herself ended up turning evil.
The former would not be allowed to live after the two-parter that introduced them (remember, Sombra was killed at the end of Crystal Empire).
The latter could be made to last an entire season, but since Twilight is essentially the show's mane character (since she's the one who gets the focus during the two-parters), I doubt that would be done except for a series finale, and even then that's a maybe.

Sort of like that one guy from the Spiderman cartoons who placed heroes and villains against each other in a game of chess. The video rule, in terms of something officially on the books, is relatively recent I think. It's always been something frowned upon, though.
