Some tidbits from my headcanon, just for the heck of it:
Fluttershy's mom was an earth pony, hence the pegasus' lackluster flight ability (except in times of stress) and affinity for animals.
-- Bulk Biceps is her brother, which would explain the apparent familiarity between the two in "Rainbow Falls" as well as his stunted wings and insane strength (earth pony parent).
AJ's mom was an Orange (Clementine), a violinist who taught AJ how to fiddle.
-- Octavia is a cousin (look-alike Fiddle Faddle ((sister?)) being present during "The Apple Family Reunion") who received some instruction from Clementine on how to play.
(Watch as this one gets destroyed by Friends Forever #20) Luna and Discord had a relationship prior to his first encasement in stone, hence her hesitation to employ the Elements of Harmony (flashback in "Princess Twilight Sparkle").
-- Celestia's plan and urging to use the Elements against Discord planted a seed of bitterness in Luna which would ultimately contribute to her transformation into Nightmare Moon.
Equestria's military is compulsory service for males (optional for females) with a choice between active duty with a short service time (two years or so) or reservist duty with a longer service time (four to six years), which explains the apparent male/female ratio imbalance seen throughout the series.
Fluttershy had never been on or near the ground before she fell from the clouds on the day she got her cutie mark.

You're throwing off my groove, man!
3235150 Sorry. I thought it might be best to point it out right away, though. Imagine if you'd started writing a 100,000 word epic or something with that as a key plot point. You'd never hear the end of it in that story's comments section. Then you'd be all like,
... So really, I'm helping, right?
Winston does have a point, but I kind of see that the rest could make sense particularly Bulk Biceps (because that is his name ) possibly being a brother to her. Or that might just be the FlutterMac bias talking in me.

Oh right, I got his official name confused with a mst3k joke. My bad.
3238830 Happens to the best of us, don't sweat it.

You never need to apologize for thinking about MST3K. Never.
