I'm a long time science fiction and animation fan who stumbled into My Little Pony fandom and got caught -- I guess I'm a Brony Forever now.
I have ideas for how Tree Hugger could be interesting in the Shadow Wars Storyverse, but I'm trying to figure out how old she is. I am thinking "up to ten years older than Fluttershy, and my Fluttershy is 24-25 around the time of "Make New Friends and Keep Discord," so I'm thinking T. H. is around 34. What do you guys think? Older? Younger?

... mostly, it's the slightly pouchy-looking eyes, the fleshy face, and a certain appearance of benign dissipation about her. Which is very much in contrast to Fluttershy's perpetual look of wide-eyed innocence. Which, mind you, Fluttershy would have if you caught her with a scalpel and recently killed corpses attempting to recreate Harmonia Pie's cupcakes recipe.

I get the idea that she;'s about the same age as Fluttershy, maybe a year or two older or younger.

We don't know how her hippy culture works in Equestria, but it's fairly outdated in our time (not really getting into new-agers and stuff), there just aren't that many of them that aren't on the older side of the scale, i would say that mid 30's early 40's sounds good. Plus having everyone be young adults gets boring after a while, why not make her age closer to the people who fit her stereotype?
She also didn't really strike me as a younger pony like the rest of the mane six, while her attitude could be attributed to someone who was stoned, it could also be in part attributed to her being an older less excitable pony.
Slightly older. The EqG version of her would be possibly a grad student chaining herself to the fence of a nuclear power plant.

Yeah, but age seems to follow a logarithmic function when moving from Equestria to the human world (with the exception of Granny Smith, whose age is apparently constant across the entire cosmic totality.) Given that, mid-thirties sounds about right for the pony version.

If ponies can give birth at ten years old, then yes. And remember, this is the pony who didn't remember meeting a draconequus and tried atavistic mantra therapy to calm a rampaging ooze monster. (Yes, it worked, but still not an obvious solution. Though there are some nice parallels to Fluttershy and the manticore.) My point is that Tree Hugger's mentis isn't entirely compos. I wouldn't be surprised if she spends more time around rare creatures than around other ponies, and between that and her recreation, her wits seem to have gone to seed.

Personally, I think that her belief that the cosmos seems to want to make her look like a ridiculous idiot (white socks and sandals?!) would probably make her wonder why they wasted the nickname Derpy on her when a more viable candidate was in the mix.

Well, my Fluttershy is 24-25 in Seasons Four-Five. She's the second oldest of the Mane Six; AJ is 26-27, and the youngest, Twilight Sparkle, is 21-22. But it may shock you to know that I'm interpreting that incredibly-intense friendship between Fluttershy and Tree Hugger to mean exactly what you might think. And more, though, as you'll see later in this comment.
The movement from which I decided Tree Hugger (and Flax Seed, and others like them) originate are the "Geosophists," a sort of cult of nature-lovers founded in YOH 1461, or 39 years Before Luna's Return, who believe that by going back to nature and abandoning artificiality, they can commune with Gaia, the spirit of the Earth's whole ecosphere, and hence be happier Ponies. It started out very idealistic and noble, yet (as these things often do) wound up with Ponies hugging each other in the mud and taking far too few baths. Tree Hugger is a third-generation Geosophist, and one of those who actually has the Talent to enable her to commune in ways denied to many of her fellow believers.
Geosophism is culturally-related to but philosophically almost diametrically-opposed to Transfigurationism, a movement which derived (originally in Morgan Province) from Neighsian influences in the 1410's and 1420's. The Transfigurationists believed that by meditation, contemplation and virtue -- and sometimes strange and exotic drugs -- it was possible to transfigure oneself into a more spiritual Pony, closer to true Divinity. Many of the first Geosophists were rebels against the aesceticism of Transfigurationism. They did, however, pick up on the drugs. And turn that part of it Up To Eleven. The Transfigurationists also took more baths.
Tree Hugger's emotional reaction to first meeting Fluttershy was extreme. Not only was the appearance of somepony like her hinted at in the speculations of the Geosophists, but some of Tree Hugger's more secretive friends, who live in the Hidden Valley in a redwood grove about a hundred miles from Seaddle (North Amareica is in a warmer climatic phase than is North America on our Earth) have a prophecy of a High Queen of Kindness who Fluttershy's details seem to fit. Tree Hugger thinks she may have just met a Messiah, which is one reason her love is hard to discourage.
Essentially, Tree Hugger is not only Fluttershy's friend and lover, but also her disciple. I'm not sure that Fluttershy fully-comprehends the last part of that.

That said I've met some neo-hippies/organic counter culture proponents in university and they'd be rather age contemporary to a lot of bronies. Given the Maharishi style sitar chords plucked in the background music as Tree Hugger speaks, that would go with the rise of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation in the late 60's to early 70's. (TH is 70+?)
Actually, I think she's probably around Fluttershy's age, maybe slightly older. Probably the result of growing up in a 'Hippie' Commune, possibly several generations old (something like Ponyville but founded by ponies like Tree Hugger). Sweet Celestia, a place where they ponies still graze freely? Hmm, there's probably a fic pitch there somewhere.

I'm currently-inclining toward making her 28-29 to Fluttershy's 24-25, which makes Tree Hugger a little bit older than Applejack's 26-27 but not the 34-35 I was originally assuming. My working birth year for her is now 1476 to AJ's 1478 and Fluttershy's 1480.
