    Cancelled a few things

If you noticed (you probably didn't) I moved some statuses over to 'cancelled'. Mostly there were years-old stories that I just don't have the werewithal to mess with any more. I moved them over for clarity's sake.

    5000 followers!

    That's a lot! Like a heap!

And I have nothing. I have no updates, no news, no goddamn anything. And that's a problem! I should have news, and updates. I've got one or two things I'm intending to work on, but I haven't actually done that. Most of my time has been spent working for Someone's PC doing those stories.

Why did nobody tell me?! · 4:25am Mar 18th, 2015

I did my bi-annual visit to that hellhole of elitism, Equestria Daily. I saw the synopsis for episode 3 & 4 of season 5, was mildly interested in what's going down.

And then I saw they had a date attached for when they aired.

Which is also when I noticed the 'countdown to season 5' clock.

WTF guys.

Why did nobody tell me we knew the exact release date?! Why is this not written across the fimfiction banner in big Rainbow Dash (Read as: Multicolour Neon) letters?!

I am so out of the pony loop these days :fluttercry:

You didn't ask? And it's not posted on the site because season 5 will kill so many 'cannon' stories that the internet will be flooded with the tears.

since i never visit Equestria Daily due to my dislike for their "Elitism" I could not tell you

also to fact that I have outgrown the show doesn't help.

sry

If you followed anyone you'd have seen 400 blog posts about it.

2887634 If that episode centered around the backgrounds ponies is an upcoming reality, expect a lot of raging from the fandom because of the massive headcanon breaking :derpytongue2:

So when is it? I don't really keep track myself.

2887637 Personally, I don't care myself. How I write a char and how it's shown in the show can be different things and not bother me. Besides....
mlpchan.net/pony/src/1382095852005.png
That's my pony headcanon.

2887643 Same with me. And wow, what a beautiful face-hole your pony's headcanon has!

Oh, I have a feeling S5 is going to break the fandom in half

Especially Episode 100

Dear god, they're going to tear Lyra to pieces...poor thing

didn't you see the the trailers? one or two of them had the airing date on them

I've kinda outgrown the show—to certain degree. So no, I haven't really been all that interested in the fifth season's release.

But there are going to be a lot of headcanons destroyed this season, which is going to lead to more "end of the fandom" nonsense.

I sort of wish they had done it sooner, so it wouldn't be as painful to those who've become very attached to their headcanons.

Why is this not written across the fimfiction banner in big Rainbow Dash (Read as: Multicolour Neon) letters?!

Probably because knighty is planning to move to this being a general site.

I guess we all kind of just assumed it was common knowledge in the fandom.

Haven't cared about the show since late S2. I've been less interested since Lauren stepped down/was forced off the show. It's still interesting from time to time but honestly, all you guys produce vastly more creative fiction than the show and have for a while.

I concern myself with very little about the program and community in general, I'm kind of the same I suppose. :scootangel:

2887634 For the context you're using it in here, it needs a single n for canon.

2887643 2887657 This context actually is double n.

Grammar nazi you may think me, I couldn't let this slide. :twilightsheepish:

2887657 And that's how clop is born, folks :trollestia:

You got EqD confused with /mlp/ methinks.

2887780 Oh, yeah!? Well, why don't you go... uh... um... j-jump into a pool of Jell-O!?

Dude, I, he who doesn't pay attention to anything, knew when S5 was coming out, and that says something. I didn't even notice how NMM used modern english while Luna used old english until about 3 months ago.

Dan

2887866

Early-Modern English, not Old English you bæcþearm.

2887938 You know what I meant.

~Crystalline Electrostatic~

Dan

If only Luna did actually bellow in proper Old English. That would have been SO COOL!

But Tabitha probably wouldn't be up to it. At least not without asking for a salary boost.

It also would have been more authentic, considering she was gone for 1000 years and not just 400.

I don't go to ED anymore, honestly. I usually just get most stuff from /mlp/.

fimfic banner? What fimfic banner?

Wait wut... it's almost here?... I hate the loop that eludes me...

mrk

Because everyone already knew?

Speaking as an EqD fic pre-reader that thoroughly enjoys your work... hi! Enjoy the hype, because we're all sure looking forward to the new season!

2890509 Well...

This sure is awkward :D

I only knew because of memebase and reddit.
That feeling of being out of the loop, though? Savor that. It's nice to have your likes all to yourself for a change.

2890586

No worries ^_^. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask! I'm happy to explain why we did or didn't do something, Seth's logic (or lack thereof) or I can ask the rest of the guys if I don't know myself.

So, what can I do ya for?

2893286 okay, I'll go right to the heart of the matter.

Why do you guys venerate 'proper grammar' and punctuation above all else, to the point of being elitist about it?

Some of us aren't English majors.

And I don't understand why we should have to write at the level of an English major to be able to put things on EQD if we can adequately get across what we we're trying to convey.

But when I tried to submit 'Why Pinkie Pie Smiles', I got this:

' Look for errors in the following areas:

Possessive noun use
Comma use
Conjugation
Ellipsis use
Semicolon use
Dialogue punctuation
Colon use
Capitalization'

You are part of a group that pretends like it's some kind of 'this is for the super highbrow English literature scientists only' publication and not a blog site for talking cartoon horses pandering to a crowd that is NOT highbrow English literature scientists.

And when I submitted Transcend, it was even worse.

I was basically told 'you write it like we want to write it and you're not allowed to do it any other way'.

And that's why I never bothered submitting anything to EQD.

Affliction of the heart? Never submitted.

Because I don't want to be told by some egotistical language purist that the way I write isn't good enough. Perfection is a work in progress, but apparently, if it's not absolutely, utterly perfect down to the individual letters, your publication about talking cartoon horses doesn't consider it good enough.

So.

Why are you guys so hell-bent on flowery prose and proper comma use while subsequently not seeming to give a rat's ass about the contents of the story?

If there's one thing you won't hear from an EQD prereader, it's 'well, this has some grammar mistakes, but the overall story quality makes up for it!'

No, it's always 'well the story is deficient, but your grammar is perfect! Come on through!'

Why.

And I'm sorry if I'm being confrontational with this, and it's not an attack on you, but the way EQD conducts itself in regards to what gets in and what gets tossed out for the most of inane of reasons just really rubs me the wrong way.

2893612
This wsj article is relevant, and I agree with you. No one writes English the same, it's a ever changing language that could be understood even with lots of grammatical mistakes. As long as I don't have to double take and re-read a sentence because a paragraph was written backwards or something then the writing isn't getting in the way of the story.

The only valid rule for me is: If I can say the sentences out loud and it sounds right and understandable, it's written correctly.

2893612

I can answer this whole schpiel rather easily... And the truth is that some of us are a LOT tougher on the grammar and such (a couple of us ARE English majors, I think) than, say, one of the crew like me. Personally, I go more towards 'is this enjoyable for more than just me, is it accessible to everyone if it's a crossover, am I having to go back and re-read something 8 chapters and 35,000 words ago to suddenly find the logic in something a character is now doing that seems completely screwed up compared to previous actions or beliefs?'

I would like to say that I genuinely think we've gotten better as a whole since we fixed our standards some months back. Do we still have our problems and nitpicky moments? Yep. But I believe we've gotten better about that sort of thing.

I hope this helps assuage some of your raw feelings.

Oh, and one last thing: "If there's one thing you won't hear from an EQD prereader, it's 'well, this has some grammar mistakes, but the overall story quality makes up for it!'" <- this here? I've made this argument myself a few times, and fics have gone up based on that. If the mistakes are minor, we're happy to let it slide. It's when it's more endemic that we put on the brakes.

2894065
Here's the thing though. EQD rejected "A Voice Among the Strangers", a serious contender for the best MLP fanfiction ever written, for "poor writing". How many of the big stories from back in the day, such as fallout equestria for example, wouldn't stand a ghost of a chance making it onto the site under the current administration?

A filtering process isn't a bad thing. To filter out unreadable or just downright bad stories is fine. But EQD rejects amazing stories, routinely. Consequently, I don't look to it for fanfiction because I know most of the good stories aren't there.

2896276

And here is where we get into the crux of the issue (and what spawned the idea of EQD being elitist).

"What is good to you may not be the same as everyone else."

There are folks out there that insist that Cupcakes is a masterwork. Others are convinced Past Sins is the greatest thing ever. Others still that want FOE to be up there with Moby Dick.

To be honest here, no, Fallout wouldn't pass muster nowadays, just under the revised rules on gore. That said, at least a good third of what's on EQD wouldn't be up there now.

But... We try. We do the best we can, and we're always happy to hear authors out on why they're doing what they're doing in writing. If you think we're wrong, *politely* dispute a rejection and explain your logic. We DO change our minds on things. We've also rejected authors for the fact that changing a work would actually HURT the whole thing and suggested they either keep it on fimfic to its benefit, or even strip the pony out of it and turn it into an original work to try and get it published.
