Dan Vs. Magic Gear Fun Facts · 12:43am Feb 13th, 2015

Giant, mechanical, adorable and a threat to harmony in Equestria, Magic Gear is a weapon unlike any seen before. Designed by Vice Grip and constructed by his company, FIST, the Magic Gears were built after Princess Luna requested that Vice provide "the perfect defense" for Equestria. The result is a colossal filly mech, a robot pony armed with Sword Spells, magical weapons powerful enough to turn a city to ashes. Officially, they are meant to protect Equestria in the event of nuclear conflict with humans but secretly, Vice has other plans for the terrible and terribly cute weapons to leverage his own ambitions. If only they ever did a single thing he said. Here's a few fun facts about our favorite weapons of mass magical destruction, the Magic Gears! Enjoy!

1. The Magic Gears were built and tested at FIST's main factory, the Prosperity Mining Complex, a restricted area between the Crystal Empire and Zebra Nation north-east of the Everfree Forest.

2. The current number of Magic Gears also matches the number of Stables that exist throughout Equestria and the number of raffle tickets Michael Hay purchased when he was swindled. Quite a mysterious occurrence indeed.

3. The Magic Gears require components from the majority of Equestria's nations in order to construct. Its magic powers come from a combination of zebra potion and Crystal Imperial crystals, the metal comes from the Donkey Provinces and the Prosperity Mountains themselves and the sophisticated movement and flight components come from the griffons, dragons and a myriad of other species.

4. While each Magic Gear is based on a core design, each one is unique and differently-styled. This was an effort by FIST to better sell them after receiving suggestions by Flim and Flam, who attempted to sell knockoff versions based on the original schematics shortly afterward. Magic Gears may be designed with the consumer in mind now but they are all still programmed to take orders from Vice Grip above all others. Under normal conditions, anyway.

5. Vice Grip and Lightning Claw oversee the production of each individual Magic Gear at certain stages. The units themselves are machine-built with assistance, maintenance and testing done by a clan of canines called the Metal Dogs that serve as Vice Grip's equivalent of a royal guard force.

6. Vice Grip originally began development on Magic Gear immediately after Princess Luna's request and planned on using it to betray her and attack Canterlot himself along with his army. It was only after learning of Dan's involvement with Twilight Sparkle and Chrys that caused him to delay his invasion.

7. While Vice Grip designs each Magic Gear to be nothing more than a weapon of mass destruction, he subconsciously and inadvertently adds small details to each one that give them more pony-like characteristics. This makes them unique and also gives them more of a personality, leading them to develop sentience of their own. Although he doesn't know it, Vice Grip adds a bit of himself to each of his inventions that lead them to be more than just machines.

8. Lightning Claw is an avid reader and is responsible for giving most of the Magic Gears their names(ACE, AXE, ZEUS, KNIGHT/ROOK). He usually names them during testing or sometime after completion and also enjoys giving each a unique paintjob.

9. Several other variants of Magic Gear are in development, with the larger Arcane Gear being developed by sea ponies. More about that will be revealed in the Phoenix Wright arc.

10. Despite having different forms, types, shapes and being at different levels of construction, most of the Magic Gear's walking sounds are reused sound effects from the AT-AT and AT-ST walkers in The Empire Strikes Back. Other sound effects include Megas XLR, the Scarab walkers from Halo 2 and from the Shagohod in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Even though they were based primarily on Peace Walker, very little sound effects are actually from any of the Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker battles, though much of the inspiration is.

11. The cockpit controls consist of early-90s computer parts and a Commodore 64. More advanced versions also include a Nintendo Gamecube and the electronic version of the board game Battleship.

12. The voice for Magic Gear is based off both Paz' and The Boss' voices from the Metal Gear franchise.

13. Although mare and alicorn mare versions of Magic Gear exist, they are not proportionately sized to the filly versions, being only slightly larger rather than significantly taller like their counterparts.

14. Magic Gears produce no pollution(aside from causing destruction on a massive scale) and produce zero emissions or other waste products. This makes them environmentally-friendly because Vice Grip did at one time believe in Climate Changelings, though they are in fact a hoax perpetrated by rival businesses(including Flim Flam Bros.)

15. The original Magic Gear was the Trojan Horse used by the Greeks in ancient Earth history.
