Which do you prefer? · 6:29am Feb 10th, 2015
Hi all,
As of current standing and where I am progress-wise, Chapter 31 is going to be, yet again, massive; possibly surpassing chapter 30 in wordcount. On that note, as much as I've liked to hold firm to my original numbers statements, I'll leave you all the choice:
Which do you prefer?
One long, massive read upwards in the 8 to 12 thousand word range?
OR
Less lengthy reads, so less switches in scenery, a bit more detail in certain areas and around the 4 to 5 thousand word range?
All feel free to cast your opinion. If the consensus or majority state that they're for the former, then I'll continue on as normal. If the consensus states that they enjoy the latter, I'll snip the chapter into two at a particular break point, and all previous chapter estimates will move up by exactly one. Continuity will not be an issue in either area.
What do you all think?
Less Lengthy, I personally can't handle too long chapters.
I think I'd prefer the two separate chunks.
One big chapter
I vote for less lenghty reads.
longer plz
My vote goes to smaller chapters. I have put off reading a relatively good story because of a massive 10-25k chapter and it has sometimes gone to the point where I lose all interest in a story and just quit. It's hard for me to find the time to really sit down and read those > 10k chapters.
On the other hand I also dislike reading any < 2k stories since nothing really fits in such small stories.
Chapter 30 did feel like it dragged on quite a bit; even when there's plenty of action, a long word count by itself can be daunting. The one argument I see in favor of longer chapters is that you get more content per chapter, but I think that has to take the backseat to the fact that there's more content per chapter, sometimes to its own detriment.
Casting my vote for Shorter chapters.
I have run into that problem on occasion myself. So much information going on in a chapter that it tends to extend it far more tban you intended. In cases like this I go ahead and write out the whole chapter first. Make sure it's all down so I can look at it as a whole before I decide weather I need to cut it or not. If I see any place that looks like it could make a good pause or break near the middle of the chapter, usually go ahead and break it up. However if I cant find such a place, well then I have to make a decision. If I want to break it up that would mean a few slight rewrites. Or in some cases it may wind up with a total rewrite, which I tend to do if i feel it's just too long. Though if it's only like 10k to 15k I would just go ahead and post.
Not sure if thats iseful or not but there it is. I personally dont mind s long read.
