Um... Oops... · 5:33pm Nov 25th, 2014
So, I just realized that I was using the name of someone else's OC in this story, so I changed his name to something else. The character in question is Captain Steel Song, and he originally appeared in Viking ZX's The Dusk Guard. I sincerely apologize to him for accidentally ripping him off, and I hope you guys can forgive me as well.
You know, due to the nature of pony names, there are bound to be multiple OCs with the same name. I've read two other stories with an OC that share the name of my own, Midnight Star. There's no need to change it just because someone else used it. If the character design is similar, though, that might warrant the change, but don't feel you have to have a perfectly unique name. Hell, there are bound to be ponies with the same name within the same universe, even.
2616040 Thanks, but I had read the name from his story, and even though I had forgotten the story, I still remembered the name. I'm not a copycat, so I changed it. Thanks for the vote of confidence though.
Bro do you have any idea how many people take my name and my color scheme? If you change it each and every time it's "Been taken" then you might as well have an amorphous blob as an OC. Or a sparkle dog. Do you have any idea how blinding sparkledogs are?
Either way, don't let it get to you.
Meh, your version of Steel Song is better. But I can understand why you changed it nonetheless.

That's taken
2616189 OF COURSE IT IS
-TABLEFLIP-
2616209 So is Table Flip
2616210
FAK
2616177 the character will stay the same, the only thing that has changed is his name.
2616210 2616237 I think you guys are missing the point. The creator of the OC asked me to remove it, so I did. If Hasbro asked me to remove these stories on grounds of copyright, I would. It's just that simple.
Sure, I might be acting like a pushover, but I do not want the drama involved in 'stealing' someone's OC, even if the only thing I took was the name.
Plus, FAK is taken too.
2616268 I know. We're just having fun
2616305 I know, it's cool. Just getting that out of the way
2616268
nit brez pls.
Also it's a different thing then if the creator of the oc asked you to then.
Mind you, if an insufferable douche had demanded it when it's just a name and not an entire oc ripoff then yeah, I really wouldn't care, but seeing as though they contacted you [And I hope was polite about it] to remove it, it's entirely understandable.
2616319 He was extremely polite, and very nice about it, so I obliged him. If he was a complete jerk about it, I would have told him off.
2616325
Good!
2616335 Bloodseal Brigade.
2616335 Um... what happened to your request? that was quickly taken down...
2616344
Ahaha, it was dumb nevermind PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAINS
2616347 Hmm... now I'm curious...
*moves curtains*
Mister Rogers?
2616352
Howdy Neighbor.
2616385
...Please be merciful...
2616040 I know of three people in my area who have the same combination of first and last name I do. I've even met two of them. An 'OC' is more than just a name, claiming otherwise is shear arrogance. A lot of Hollywood protagonists are ripoffs of Jesus. Terminator off the top of my head, J
esusohn Christonner? The savior of humanity and the only hope for the future? Introduced as the savior before his birth? The reign of theantichristmachines, lead by Satankynet?2616646 That's exactly my point. The OC I mentioned, Midnight Star, is a stallion, but one of the others I saw was a mare. Hell, I was thinking about making an OC named Rarity for one of my stories just for the whole 'mistaken identity' thing. I was even thinking about having G1 Rainbow Dash make an appearance.

Another video for Mr. Rodgers. Start around 16:20.... Please don't hurt me!
2617793 Um... lol whut?
2617800
What's wrong? don't you like Mister Rodgers?
2617806 reply.exe not found.
2617807
Have you renamed him in earlier chapters to?
2618270 eyup. I made the change retroactive.
2616040 2616176 2616319 2616646
Just came across this, figured I'd throw in my reasoning so I don't look like someone who's just claiming "Rar! My name! Original the character!"
I've run across characters that share the same name before, but what set this one apart was that it was quite literally a stopping point for readers. I was going along, reading away, and suddenly there's a character named Steel Song who is not just the same in name, but introduced as "Captain Steel Song of the Guard." My works star a Captain Steel Song of the Dusk Guard. The first thing I did at that point when I saw the name was stop reading and jump back up to the aforementioned description, rereading everything to see if it was a cameo appearance or a complete coincidence (I didn't think it was, but suddenly I was wondering if I'd missed something). It was the latter, but it still pulled me away from the story, because it was like reading a comic and having someone introduce themselves as Captain Steve Rogers or reporter Clark Kent. If it's a reference, it's fun, but as a main character, it gets confusing. Even if it's completely by accident.
The problem was, I could see any of the other people who were reading both making the same jump, especially as the aforementioned Captain Steel Song of the Dusk Guard has made cameo appearances in other fics on this site.
To summarize, it was not because I was concerned about anyone stealing my character (A- that'd take some serious balls to try and actually claim and B- what would be the point?), I was concerned that the immediate association was going to pull readers of both fics away. Which was why I mentioned it. There was nothing wrong with Knight Breeze's character, it was just an association of Captains that would muddle the waters for readers, because how many were going to go back after seeing that name and reread the same section multiple times to see if it was "Captain Steel Song of the Dusk Guard" as a cameo or just "Captain Steel Song of the Guard" with no actual resemblance? Story progression halted, immersion gone. Not what you want as a writer or a reader.
That was why, when asked, I agreed it was probably a good idea to change. Not because I'm concerned about plagiarism (really?), but because I like the story, others like the story, and the accidental inference could cause people to like the story less.

Dude, We know. You're preaching to the choir.
We agree with you.
Why would you dig up an old post and double confirm it?
2649295 I'm just glad you aren't one of those pricks that get all offended just because someone has an OC with the same name, even if everything else about them is different. If they're as similar as this, I can understand recommending a name change, though.
