    New chapter incoming

New chapter finished. Its going to be short compared to previous ones but its been long enough between updates. Editing starts tomorrow.

Nothing to really report personally. just been busy IRL. Learning to play traveler 2e for my gaming group's also been slowing me down lately but it looks like a fun system

    Got my hard drive fixed

And all my data's been restored. It even costed less than I was originally quoted. Still pricey but I got my data back, and backed up on 3 different USB drives.

    Proof I'm not dead

So I'm aware I've been dead quiet lately, and I felt the need to touch base. So here's a peek at the next song in the upcoming chapter without any context. My way of giving you something. Its no where near finished, but progress is being made.

    Harddive died

Last year when I had my little vacation I noticed my laptop having signs of its approaching death, so I ordered a cheap external hard drive. It was a panic purchase, I am very uneducated on computers aside from their general use, and copied all my data. I since used it as the main storage space to keep microsoft's prying eyes out of my affairs (its the spirit of the thing rather than having

An F bomb that could be heard in deep space · 11:56pm Nov 22nd, 2014

Last night was like any other, I spend most of the night writing, then went to bed. This morning I turned my new laptop on to check my email, and I get the system recovery start up. I try several things, even setting the computer back a day, but it can't fix the problem. It also means that 90% of the next chapter of Lord Barleycorn is stuck in that lappy.

I had to break my old laptop out, and it works, despite its age and dead battery. My new lappy, the one holding the new chapter hostage, is a HP Probook 450 g1 with windows 7, and it will be heading back to the store I got it from in only 3 months of buying it.

Still really pissed off about this, since I only have the first few paragraphs backed up on a flash drive. So much work potentially lost. Still, I do have a backup project while I wait to see if this chapter can be salvaged. A christmas special for Lost and Blind.

Uff, computer problems are the worst. Especially when you have non-backed up work on it.
Been there bro, you have my sympathies.

Maybe they can restore it, but knowing your average large store chain tech troglodyte, they will just change the hard drive and parts, not even attempt a restoration and give you vague excuses when you ask about it. In my experience anyway.

2610733 That's still better than my experience with our local Best Buy. One year they told me twice that my old PC was repaired, only to tell me it wasn't quite done when I arrived until they finally told me there was nothing they could do. That's why I take my computer to a friend who can (and does) build computers and talks like he knows what he's doing.

Hell, once I heard a Best Buy salesman tell an old woman that the computer being black was a "Feature."

Hehehe yea, that sounds about right. Ive been in similar jobs in my teenage years and can safely say that most do as little as they can get away with and still keep their jobs, sometimes not even that.

You could try installing linux or windows xp onto a flash drive and boot into that. Then you can just pull the data you want directly from the hard drive if it isn't corrupted.

2610808 I did like having Linux (when I had it), I think I'll just start keeping my chapters on my flash drive and constantly back them up on my computers when I'm done.

OUCH. That stings man. I hope they are able to salvage the story and all your other stuff off that laptop.

Incidentally you might want to look into having your stuff constantly backed up to a place like google drive, i do that with my drawings and writing, just so that if something like your situation happened, i wouldn't lose anything.

Well damn, and just when the mane six started meeting Lord Barleycorn too :ajsleepy: My condolences, I hate busted computers to death. Mine got lightning-fried early this year, and man was it annoying to replace the power source.

This Lost and Blind Christmas special. Will it fit anywhere in the timeline or is it an offshoot?

2611113 I think I remember you mentioning this. Yes, it's like having a nail in your shoe. ><
As for the special, it'll be a floating chapter until I get to that point. I just REALLY want to do a Lost and Blind chapter, and this is a good excuse since I'll just continue to be pissed if I have to rewrite LBC's latest chapter.

2611014 I have a google doc account, but the old man in me is leery of change and I haven't done anything with it. After this, however, I may be willing to do anything to back up my chapters. :applejackunsure:

The other option is dropbox, completely free, and every time you update a file within your dropbox folder it is instantly uploaded to your personal drobox on their servers. That once saved a friend of mines arse when his comp was dying and he transferred all his art to it.

And i highly doubt you are THAT much of an old fart. XP

2611260 Well, maybe not old, but it usually takes something like a hammer falling from a roof to make me wear a hard hat. (never happened actually, just an analogy.) :pinkiehappy:

2611014 Google drive isn't a backup service. Offsite backup services like CrashPlan or Carbonite is better suited for this.

HP

There's the problem sir.

Also, never trust Best Buy. Their agents have NO idea what they are doing. Back when I was first getting into IT, and I had gotten my first certification (the lowly CompTIA A+), I had applied there. They told me I was overqualified since I was a certified PC technician.

2611665 Oh I believe you. Best Buy proved to me in the worst way possible that they don't know thing one about computer repair. It's why i bought my computer at a different store ((which it will be brought to, only because I have it under warranty)) and if I get the same shitty service there, I got a local computer guy who might be able to fix it.

Ooh, that sucks. I hope you get it fixed soon...if not for we the readers, then for you the provider.

2620397 Update: I did get to my computer service guy, and he told me to get a harness so I could download all the stuff directly from the hard drive, since essentially Windows became corrupted and basically isn't there.

Trouble is, I don't have the tools to do it myself. I discovered what screwdrivers I have are either magnetized or would strip the screws. My friend who builds computers is going to help me when he gets time, but that's another headache. :ajsleepy:

2620689 Oy, sounds painful. Good luck with that.

And Happy Belated Food Day.

2620720 Happy eat-til-you-pass-out day to you too. :ajsmug:

2620766 It's the day after for me. (And I can't exactly eat the food that's traditionally there. I tend to have to make something for myself, because my stomach will get upset otherwise. But you enjoy the casseroles and stuffing and whatever else you have. Maybe take a Pecan Pie. ...Respect be to the Wise Spider-of-the-porch.)

2620774 I'm the weirdo who always grabs a salad and doesn't put gravy on anything. But I am partial to the way I make sweet potatoes. lots of brown sugar...

No matter how healthy I eat I can't deny my sweet tooth. :pinkiehappy:

2620786 Don't get me wrong, I like traditional dishes...I just can't eat them in quick succession. I tend to make do with my personal Shepherd's Pie or some Chili, or maybe a bowl of Beef Stew. But that's all I'll truly 'eat'. I'll be nibbling on the things I like though.

(Just a question, but if your family goes to a specific place for holidays, is there a creature that sits nearby? I'm asking for the sake of Barleycorn... If you read the last line of the previous comment, it's an holiday tradition to pay respects to the presence of a creature that sits largely noticeable at an entrance to the home. I thought you might find this interesting.)

2620794 I find all traditions fascinating, thanks for sharing. I can't think of any tradition my family observes that defers from the norm, we have a few superstitions but they're more like the 'hedge apples repel spiders' and 'eating rhubarb on New Year's Eve is good luck.' Mythology and traditions are two of my favorite subjects, because we humans come up with all sorts of ways to make life interesting. Like the Australians having a tradition of seeing who can throw heavy rubber boots the furthest, to the convoluted knot of traditions, faiths, and cultures that went into creating modern Christmas.

2620849 Well, I know a few...it's just that's the one that's most recent and autumn related. There's a large spider that sits on a web in the corner of the entrance to the porch, at least three-inches long in body alone. But that's just one location...otherwise respects would be payed to the local cats around the other place my family tends to gather. Really, it's more that the largest, most easily found species of creature is paid that respect. Though it does tend to be a fall tradition particularly... It's not just me and my family who observe it.
