Helping someone in need, because why not · 1:30pm Oct 17th, 2014
this is going to be a bit of a long post so bare with me people.
i'll try to explain why and how i decided to help another person that i never meet before just because i could, nobody should need to have a reason to help another person. do it because you can.
we all read about random act of kindness online, things that restore our faith in humanity... seeing stuff like that is nice but doing this things is better.
The begining
2 days ago i woke up and found something strange, a story that i like The Chase by kudzuhaiku was not updated like it should. while some of you might think at this point why was that strange, the reason is simple, Kudz keep updating his story on a daily basis with 2~3 chapters a day, so missing a day is a strange thing.
so i ended up sending a PM to see it everything was ok... it wasn't, the replay came if the form of a blog post An update to those who don't want to read the whole thing i will just give you the short version of it, his life the real life outside of the realm of internet went down in more ways then one both financial and health wise. he was in a dark place in life... so i decided to do something, why? because i can.
in the past i tried to donate to Kudz as i do with other authors from time to time when i enjoy their work, in his case he created a huge verse, with a deep story and epic characters but he refused, while he thanked me for my intention he didn't want to take my donation. this is the point i need to explain that in his blog post he didn't ask people for help or money he just wanted to vent out and speak what's on his mind, many read his post and replayed in many ways, i decided words are not enough.
an author, especially a good one like Kudz that decides to abandon his writing due to problem in real life isn't something i can pass by, as some one who lacks artistic talent and envy people who do (writers, painters and ect'...) seeing one dropping his passion in life (and i do believe that in Kudz's case that is a passion with how he writes his storys) because he has problems is a great loss to all of us.
What did i do?
i know that i'm only a man, one man that can't fix the world, i'm a realist i know that i can't fix everything that is wrong in life. but i also know that i can try to fix small things one at a time, and this time it was Kudz.
while i can't help him with his health issues or give even the simple hug (it's sounds stupid but small acts of kindness go deep with people, i know, i had my own share of those moments). i decided to do the only thing i could, donate some money to help him. after a small talk with him i also found out that there is even an issue with transferring the money by normal means, so i went around the issue with Western Union. and i with him went out to his readers for help.
Why i love out fandom
most of us know the phrase, i came for the show i stayed for the fandom, we are more then people that came together to because of a show, we are a community that helps one another in time of need.
after i decided to use my own paypal to raise donations to help Kudz, people showed up and donated, doing their own small act of kindness and helping a fallow brony in need. and so we got a nice sum of 496$ in only 2 days, more then i or Kudz could expect... and while i was surprised as some people donated even 100$ i was more pleased to see a single 1$ donation, while it wasn't big the fact that someone donated a single dollar because that what he could counts more in my book.

do i plan my small fund raiser to be the end of things? hell no... this was only a small thing to patch up a problem in the shortest time possible. we have a man with problems and i don't intend a single donation be the end of us (yes, us the people, not just me) helping Kudz, because while we can't solve every problem he has we can try to help him out.
i intend to open up a Patreon account for him, this tool in our age and time that comes to replace the normal patronage that was used for years, where people helped artist to do their work. because as we know it, while we love art and in this case storys that doesn't help the people who spent time making them, our life became grey in the pursuit of money and people abandon their dreams of writing, playing, singing and so on because that road is not an easy one.
so Patreon was born, helping artist to do their art that we enjoy while helping them a bit with some income from their art.
some details on the donations
i raised the donations using my own paypal account and i want to be clear with what we raised and what was done with the money.
after 2 days and with the help of 13 people we raised 496$, those with sharp eyes will see that the amount of the side is less then that, only 472$ and that is due to paypal fees, my own donation that isn't listed among the people on the list came in the form of rounding up the amount to 500$ and paying for the WU fees so Kudz can get the full amount the people donated, it ended up in 2024NIS (~544$) i used to transfer the money to him today.
any other amount that will be donated will be sent later on, together i hope with the patreon funds.
