I generally find in the 5k range to be the best balance of content vs time-to-read.

Not too short, but not too long, either.
Just right should be good.

I generally prefer 2000-3000, especially if there's a ton of dialogue. Action sequences get some leeway.

Though anything is better than butchering the plot for the sake of chapter length.

I agree. 4-6k is for me the optimal range. Chapters shorter than 2k annoy me, and the lunatic who writes the [mature] fic "Diaries of a Madman" (yes, HiE, I know )...well, let's just say I think there's a special place in Tartarus reserved for him...(if you're not familiar, his shortest chapters are about 10k and his longest are over 30k...the story is currently over 1.5m words, which is the main reason I started reading it...I have over 150 chapters to go).

So yeah. 4-6k. A nice, consumable amount, allows for a few scenes to be fleshed out well without putting your reader in the awkward position of having to stop mid-chapter.

Of course, I'm responding to this post, but I have to admit, Lunatics is still hanging out on my RL list, unread. Too much stuff to read, too much time spent writing my own crappy fics, too much time at work, etc. (the cast of background ponies doesn't pop it to the top of my list either, sorry).

I like 3-7k chapters in general. Any more and I feel a little tired. Any less and I feel unsatisfied.

Not a problem--I imagine plenty of people feel the same way. That being said, all of the main characters (aside from Moonshine, who's an OC) actually have speaking parts in the show. They're really side characters.

So, I've read it now. Pretty good. I like the characterization of Luna here and the interplay with Celestia; many authors (myself included) overly caricaturize her, but in this story she works as a "real character" Looking forward of more chaps to this as well. See what you did there, guilting me into it and all

Part of the issue with Luna is that it's ridiculously hard to get her voice to sound right. I've pored over all her canon lines a few times and I'm still not sure I'm getting it right.
