A question for SSB: Disharmony fans · 12:16pm Jan 26th, 2014
So, I've decided to up the roster for Super Smash Bros: Disharmony to 50 characters (the first chapter has been edited to reflect this).
As a result, a couple characters that I'd removed from the roster from previous games have been added back in, and I've also got three new openings for newcomers.
Which leads me to my question.
Is anybody reading the story decently familiar with the Advance Wars series, the game Nazo no Murasme-jō, the game Sin and Punishment, the game Lock's Quest, or the game Trace Memory (also known as Another Code: Two Memories and has a Japan only sequel)?
(I'm particularly interested in that last one at the moment if anybody is familiar with it)
Also, to answer your inevitable question, yes I could just watch a Let's Play of these games or buy and play the games myself, but that would take a lot of time...
...Time that could be put to use actually WRITING this story
To answer your next question, yes, I've been looking at the respective wiki pages. These are the games/characters that have wiki entries that are woefully incomplete.
If anyone here is, please contact me through PM's. I have some questions I'd like to ask about specific characters in these series and if they'd be suitable to include.
If nobody here is, I might just include a Mii and insert myself into the story as a butt monkey character.
I can't say I'm familiar with any of these games. Sorry...
I'm pretty familiar with Advance Wars along with Sin and Punishment. As for the other three series... Not so much. Though, my personal opinion would be to use Little Mac along with the Advance Wars and Sin & Punishment reps.
I actually kind of like the idea of you as your own Butt Monkey. Especially if your character is a guise for Crazy Hand or the villain du jour.
I would love the agents from Elite Beat Agents to show up as a stage hazard.
You could always put in some of the new characters for SSB4. I'd totally love to see Rosalina or Palutena (the screenshots of her in the game are too good to be fake), or even Megaman. Especially Megaman. You should totally add in Megaman, Dusty. I will kiss the ground you walk on if you put in Megaman.
Just saying . . .

To answer your comment in a more serious light, I'll think about it. Megaman is possible, though I am hesitant to add more third party characters (though if I added him, I could get him and Simon Belmont into a Captain N reunion thing, which might be amusing XD).
Rosalina is unlikely. I'm already hesitant to add more Mario characters. If, for some reason, I do decide on adding another Mario character, it'll likely be Princess Daisy. Because Daisy is best Princess.
Villager won't happen because I truly believe that games like Animal Crossing are the epitome of evil. I hate games like Animal Crossing with a fiery passion.
I cannot add Palutena. Not only am I inclined to believe she's an assist trophy or a background element, there are very important, spoilery story reasons for this.
I'd actually feel more inclined to add Wii Fit Trainer, as I do feel that Super Smash Bros needs more Sisters.
Still, like I said in the journal, I'm very interested in the game "Trace Memory," due to the interesting sounding female protagonist it sports. Not to mention I do love the idea of introducing people to a newer Nintendo IP that hasn't gotten much attention.

I actually like the idea too, but it's a potentially dangerous road that I'm not sure I'm willing to walk. It would bring things to the table that might send it off in a very unwanted direction.
I dunno. I'll think about the whole Mii thing. Maybe I'll base it on a friend or a famous lets player or something instead so that I won't be inclined to turn this into a self insert fic. That wouldn't completely negate all the problems with the idea though...
If I think I can handle it, maybe I'll go through with it.

I'm afraid I don't know who those are...
I've played all of the Advance Wars games, so I've got a pretty comprehensive knowledge of those characters. The other games though, most of them I haven't even heard of.
Also, if you're planning on using a Let's Player Mii, might I suggest one or all of The Runaway Guys? Chuggaaconroy in particular would make a great butt monkey!

The Elite Beat Agents are a mysterious group of suit-wearing, morale-boosting male cheerleaders who can, among other things, dance a man back from the dead.

There's an increasing amount of evidence supporting her playability.

Animal Crossing is the Farmville before Farmville was a thing. It's a game made up entirely of inept characters that are incapable of taking care of themselves and want you to do everything for them for no form of reward. It wants you to do this every day for the rest of your life or your precious town will fall into disrepair. Meanwhile, nothing ever comes of your hard work. No interesting gameplay beyond faffing about. No interesting narrative to tell. No tangible reward. It's the video game equivalent of Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a mountain.
I've read a thread or two on the subject. The general impression I've gotten is that it is a really good fake. Either way, it's a moot point in terms of the present conversation as there is no way from a narrative standpoint that she would work in the course of this story.

Heh. That's kinda neat, I guess.
I'll give you a super rare fudge-coated holographic double deluxe mega limited-edition trading card if you include Professor Layton. He is too perfect to not be a part of Super Smash Bros, and I keep hoping he will show up in the actual series.

...you know, I hadn't even considered him. I've never played a Professor Layton game or even particularly bothered to look one up, so I don't even know who owns him. I've heard about him, mostly in some sort of relationship to Phoenix Wright (which he's often compared to and I AM a fan of). If he's owned by Nintendo or at least shown up on a Nintendo console, then he'll be in the running.

He is the main character of the Professor Layton series, which are exclusive to Nintendo handhelds, though he is owned by the independent video game developer/publisher Level-5.
He is mostly mentioned in conjunction to Phoenix Wright because both are rather cerebral series that have quirky characters and somewhat nonsensical story-telling. Their crossover game (thus far only out in Japan, though they have promised it will come here eventually) also ties them together.
Professor Layton is the true epitome of the English gentleman without a hint of the satire that usually accompanies that archetype. He is polite, intelligent and though an excellent swordsman detests violence and prefers a peaceful solution to any problem.

If they're exclusive to nintendo handhelds, I'll stick him in the possibles then. After all, I did the same for Maxwell, even though Scribblenauts is technically owned by 5th-Cell.
(I would have immediately included Phoenix Wright as well, except for the fact that he ended up appearing in Marvel vs. Capcom on other platforms)
I'm not entirely sure how I would fit him into a fighting game, though. If he's a swordfighter, that could work, except if he has a general distaste for fighting in general, I'm not sure how I'd make him a combatant. Any suggestions?
1790751
Oh, he's willing to fight if the situation demands it. He just values outwitting his enemies to outfighting them. Kind of like how Sherlock Holmes was a capable boxer but his favored approach was cunning.
As far as moves go. Besides the sword, he also has his "and the answer is..." finger jab, a coin-gun he made out of a slot machine, his extensive tea set (boiling water/kettle attacks and tea powder for either smokescreens or to induce sneezing), but of course his ultimate attacks would be puzzles. He is a fiend for puzzles, both solving and creating/remembering them.
I know I'm biased because I love the character, but I think he'd be a fun friend/foil to Twilight given that there aren't really any other intellectuals in Smash Bros. *Chuckle* Though if they fought it would likely devolve into a puzzle contest with no actual violence occurring.

Okay, you know what?
Sure. Why not put him in.
I have two slots open. Why the heck not. He'll work. I'll figure out a way to make him work.
I may end up coming to you a few times to ask questions, though
To quote Layton, "You sir, are a true gentleman."
I'm happy to help with any info you need on him.
