S4:E9 "Pinky Apple Pie" Review · 2:37am Jan 20th, 2014

Pinkie Apple Pie. Let's get to it.

Uh, is this a typo? Pinky instead of Pinkie?
It's been four seasons, people. You'd think the writers would know how to spell the names of the characters by now.

This episode addresses the mature topic of genealogy. Pinkie Pie discovers that she might be related to the Apple family.

When Pinkie Pie had Applejack's cutie mark was it clever foreshadowing or mere coincidence?

I can relate to Applejack wanting to make sure her family's on their best behavior. I liked this episode better than previous Applejack-centered stories. This episode didn't revolve around Applejack overcoming stubbornness for the umpteenth time. Also, what's happening here? Did Applejack just orgasm?

The song was awesome and is always able to put a smile on my face whenever I hear it!

This whole episode really resonated with me, due to my love of genealogy.

It also makes me think about Pinkie Pie's family. She's so happy to be with the Apples. Was she disowned? She has two sisters, a mother and a father, yet she's acting like she's never had a family before.

Come to think of it, she was part of two families prior to the Apples! So what's the deal with Pinkie Pie?

I love how the Apples were trying to act like one big happy family in front of Pinkie Pie.

The red eye on Pinkie Pie's camera was a nice touch.

There was a great perspective shot as they were going down the waterfall.

Did Pinkie Pie make the duck face? Why would she do that? Why would anyone do that?

Hold on. Was that...? No. It couldn't be... Could it?

Holy crap. Slenderman is canon!

So let me get this straight. Derpy needs to be censored from The Last Roundup, but Slenderman gets a free pass?

Maybe Derpy could've remained unaltered if she had her own catchy defense song.

Also, speaking to the Down With Molestia crowd, why don't you protest against some legitimate gender inequality?

But I digress...

Goldie's a crazy cat lady!

Cat made of dust. LOL!

I like to imagine that was an actual cat who died and decomposed on the spot until it turned to a cat-shaped pile of dust.

The ending was heartwarming. It was touching on a personal level. I know what it feels like to love someone who isn't related by blood. Adoption had played a major role in my family and I couldn't imagine my life without it. This episode was so special to me. I find it difficult to express with words just how much the message means to me.

You didn’t give me these arms,
But you gave them a family to hold.
You didn’t give me my body,
But you’ve truly shaped its soul.
Your love have given me wings
And how my spirit soars,
Knowing that I always will be yours.
Forever and always
I am yours.

Best Applejack episode ever!

So who wrote this magnificent episode? Natasha Levinger? Doesn't sound familiar. This is her first writing credit of My Little Pony? Talk about making a good first impression! What else has she worked on?... She has only one other credit on IMDB? What is it?... She co-wrote a teleplay for a TV movie in 2004 called My Sexiest Mistake? Based on the romance novel of the same name by Kristin Hardy? Let's read an excerpt from the book.

"Helene, I'm trying."
"For heaven's sake, Ryan, the hard part is done. You've got most of the book written. All you have to do is get them between the sheets for a little nooky."
"A lot of nooky, Helene." Ten to fifteen pages, last time she checked. Ryan tried to stem the tide of rising anxiety. "The scene doesn't want to come out. I keep trying, but I just can't write it..."

...Helene heaved a long-suffering sigh down the phone. "Ryan, you have to do this. Now is not the time to get writer's block. Do you at least have a draft?"
Ryan thought of the miserable paragraph that she's wrung out the night before. Normally, her prose galloped onto the screen. Okay, well, there were times it trotted and times it downright dragged its feet, but it at least came.
If only her characters could.

So Natasha's only writing credit before Friendship is Magic was adapting an erotic novel for cable television? I look forward to seeing more of her contributions to My Little Pony in the near future. Welcome to the team, Natasha!

Way too much of an obvious filler episode for me to truly enjoy. At least the rest of them felt important somehow, but this one was just... meh.

I'm not sure if they meant to write the title like that or not, but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt... for now.

I found it alright, not uber-ultra amazing, but fun none the less. Plus, the fact they added Slenderman made me giggle like a little school girl.

Thought it was definitely a special episode to watch. Even though it wasn't really anything like a major plot-wise aspect to the overall season, I still found it quite enjoyable. Definitely its themes can be learned and taken to heart that not all families have to be genetically related to be a family :moustache:

My theory on the dust cat: there is an entire magic-based ecosystem of fragile dust creatures that appear in very old places. Their unique bodies allow them to reform after being dissipated, but they do so by becoming smaller creatures: dust mites, dust bunnies, ect.

Yeah, the complete absence of either the Pies or the Cakes being mentioned was kind of odd. :applejackunsure:

Also, I didn't realize Goldie Delicious was supposed to be a mare until seeing the reactions. That's what happens when Peter New does the voice, I guess. Until then, I thought it was a blow for gender equality: crazy cat hoarding isn't just limited to women!

If not Slendermane (or Slendercolt and even Slenderpony) :twilightsheepish:

1737499 This is to you as well. :twilightsheepish:

Another great review, I myself really enjoyed this episode.

Best dang episode I've watched as of now in Season 4.

I don't know why but that skipping animation used during the song really makes me smile

I loved this episode more than any of the others in Season 4. It took the show back to its roots where not everything has to be some serious life or death battle or something like that :ajsmug:

1742799 I hardly think so. :facehoof:
