    Death From Above

There has been a trope (I suppose you could call it) in the naughtier parts of the fandom since probably almost the very beginning. It concerns pegasi (and alicorns), and it's absolute nonsense.

    Hi.

I'm still alive. I hope that's still true of all of the cool people I've interacted with here over the years, but these days, it's a bad idea to make assumptions.

How are you? Hangin' in there?

    And another thing...

Some time ago, the possibility of a sequel to one of my fics was threatened discussed. I wrote a couple of segments just now, and we'll see if my muse continues taking me to interesting places.

    Some headcanon for you...

These are ideas I've kicked around, but I'm not attached enough to any of them to want to argue about them. Pick a fight elsewhere.

Still a Mess, Still Not Dead

I hold my hands in front of me
To block my line of sight
It seems my eyes are getting tired
    Of staring at the light
The more I see, the more I feel
The less I want to know
If you think too much, you'll blow your mind
    You might just lose control
    And scream

    -- Seven Nations, "Scream"

In which music of another decade is assigned to FIM characters as theme songs... · 9:51am Nov 25th, 2013

...for no good reason whatsoever.
All songs released between 01/01/1980 and 12/31/1989.

Pinkie Pie
Hey, remember when Eddie Murphy used to be funny? I do, but if your answer was "no", you're probably just too young. Remember when Eddie Murphy used to be a respected singer with a promising recording career ahead of him? No, of course you don't -- no one does. Regardless, Eddie did at least manage to join the annals of one-hit wonderdom, and the chorus is totally Pinkie's song.
Party All The Time - Eddie Murphy

Applejack
This one isn't something you're going to hear in your average retro setlist; I think it counts as a little obscure. I was positive that I had this song one of my many 1980s compilations CDs, but if I do, it somehow escaped being transferred to my computer. (And as the CD collection is packed away, it's not exactly an easy thing to go check.) Anyway, this one is dedicated to everyone who loves the hardworking farm pony.
Working Girl - the Members

Rarity
Even though she doesn't realize it, Rarity has more in common with the Diamond Dogs than just an affinity for gems -- both parties have a connection to a legendary, nearly mythical creature known as Bowie. (Some say this connection even runs in families.) No one really knows how far his influence truly extends, but he may be more powerful than you think.
Fashion - David Bowie

Rainbow Dash
A few years back, while running a superhero RPG, I introduced a flying speedster as one of the villains (and much later, reformed him into a hero). Our group made "soundtrack" setlists so we had not just background music for the games, but stuff appropriate to what we were doing. One of my players suggested this song for my guy Skysplitter; I listened to it and knew he was right. I think it applies just as well (if not better) to Dash. "One minute here, and one minute there..."
From Out of Nowhere - Faith No More

Twilight Sparkle
You know what? You can say anything you like about Xanadu being a bad movie... mostly because that's accurate. But the music... well, that's another matter. Half the songs (one side of the album, back in the day) are ELO, and Jeff Lynne is an underrated genius. Not that there's anything wrong with the songwriting done on Olivia's side; I can never remember the man's name, but the melding he did of Big Band and New Wave in "Dancin'" was particularly brilliant. But I digress -- while there are a ton of songs about magic and several even titled "Magic" (I could have gone with the Cars, for instance), this one just says Twilight Sparkle to me.
Magic - Olivia Newton-John

Fluttershy
I tried hard to find something other than this song, I really did. Even though I've always thought of it as an '80s tune, Nick Lowe's "Cruel to Be Kind" was actually a 1979 release. (I looked it up.) Plus, as catchy a song as that is, it really doesn't make any sense. She was cruel when discorded, she was cruel after assertiveness training, but the rest of the time she's just kind. I did try to associate her behavior after the Iron Will seminar with Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna Take It", but I couldn't make it fly. So we're stuck with this repetitive tune. I'm not linking to it, though; I can't control what kind of stuff you put in your ears, but don't expect me to be your enabler.
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo

What's that? You say you want more ponies?
Go check out 1980s Theme Music 2: Electric Boogaloo!
(I can't prove it, of course, but I started name-dropping that particular silly/dated pop culture reference long before anyone else I know.)

Hmm, well, the songs that occured to me personally from the 80's, offhand, were "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" for Pinkie Pie, and "She Blinded Me With Science" for Twilight...

The first is especially accurate if you remember "Too Many Pinkie Pies".

Very nice selections. I am especially pleased by the David Bowie song.

Glad you like!

Cyndi Lauper was considered, actually. I think my reasoning behind the decision was narrowing it down from girls in general to one girl in particular, or something like that. And you're right, the Thomas Dolby would have been a good choice. Honorary mention?

This is awesome. Your music selections are rather good.

For Rarity I had Madonna's "Material Girl" in mind, but I like your choice better.

Thanks! :pinkiehappy: And yeah, Rarity is really only a "Material Girl" on the surface. She's shown us several times that there's more to her than that, despite what her detractors might say.

Ok, this blog was cool enough to earn a follow

And now, some more 80's music and ponies :pinkiehappy:

New follower! :yay:
And I'm always up for watching well-made PMVs. :pinkiehappy:

Edit: Whoever put "Safety Dance" together did a great job. Nice selection of clips and good timing.

1542127 Well, if you want something well made...

In this one, it even looks like it would be a real Led Zeppelin music video
[youtube=nH5H5n1Ao2w]

And this one... it inspired my fic, A Brave, New World
[youtube=NcTM-lRxPbs]

Lots of technical expertise went into that second video, but I have to say I enjoyed the first one just a little bit more. It's kind of hard to compete with Zep, you know?

1542508 Yeah... I wish I had the video editing skill some ponies have! :twilightsheepish:

When it comes to Pinkie, I don't think any band captures her better than Devo. And as for a specific song, well, that would be Weird Al's Devo style parody, Dare to be Stupid.

:rainbowdetermined2: Black Sabbath's Die Young. A song about living for today, for tomorrow never comes. "Gather the wind, though the wind won't help you fly at all". Or maybe Judas Priest's Freewheel Burning.
Look before you leap
Has never been the way we keep
Our road is free
Charging to the top
And never give in never stops

:fluttershysad: So wish I could go with Golden Earring's She Flies on Strange Wings:
She wears softness as a gown
She spreads magic all around
Her feathers still untouched
She takes but nothing and she gives so much
But alas, that's 1971.

Also, good choices.

1) Never heard of 'em, sorry.
2) Already have a song selected for Celestia.
3) Song is disqualified, as it was released in January 2010 (per Wikipedia). This is strictly 1980s material here.

1544120 1) That makes me sad...:fluttershyouch:
2) I would love to know what Celestia's song is!:pinkiehappy:
3)That picture made me smile.

Celestia's song will be in the next entry, most likely at the beginning. You probably haven't heard of the song I picked, but I would bet money that you know the band's big hit.
