TrotCon, Moonlight, and how to write professional speedfics

First off, I wanted to thank everyone who read and commented on Moonlight. It's definitely my favorite story I've written yet, and it was great to see it get such a positive reception. As far as a sequel goes, I have no plans at the moment, but I might revisit it later for a short story or oneshot. The dream setting opens up a lot of possibilities, and that made it a really fun story to

    I will never sleep

Looks like I'm starting another fairly long multi-part story against my better judgement. I know exactly what I'm getting myself into. I will probably regret this in a few months.

Anyway, it's based on an idea I've been working on for a few months. I'll try to post chapters on a fairly regular schedule, unless life gets in the way.

Stay tuned for terrible things happening to Scootaloo.

We'll be talking about that one story I wrote that a lot of people read, as well as tips for aspiring writers. It's the perfect thing to listen to if you're trying to write a story, but don't want to actually work on it, so you're

    A Cutie Mark Crusaders Christmas!!

I guess that "A Cutie Mark Crusaders Hearth's Warming Eve" would be more accurate, but it doesn't have the catchy alliteration.

I just finished a new story and submitted it, so it should be up on the site pretty soon!

You go and be defiant. Fight the power!

As much fun as that sounds, I am guna be defiant by not being defiant. So I fight ALL the powers! :flutterrage: Or something...

Congratulations, man! :pinkiehappy:

45211

That's so defiant, it meets conformity coming the other way.:derpytongue2:

:ajsmug:Also, some congratulations to JasonTheHuman. You've earned this interview with the skill of your writing, and for that I applaud you. I hope the interview goes well. I don't have any Lyra emoticons handy, so have a Twilight one instead:

Make sure you rehearse your pre-prepared answers a hundred times before you go on. :raritywink::rainbowlaugh:

What's 9pm (EST) in English? Because if it's at a reasonable hour they I might actually consider this show thing...

So... when is that in Eastern Daysaving Time?...

http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc

Enter 9 PM from an Eastern time zone region (i.e. New York) and convert it to your local one.

:ajbemused: You said it wrong. It should be:

Where doing this.
Where MAKING THIS HAPPEN!

Jk jk. I'm super excited for you though! I'll totally be watching if at all possible.

Awesome! I am surely going to listen to this

If I guessed by your name, you'd be the one more likely to initiate that.

Any chance of you answering the spoiler questions from the interview here or in another blog post?

Also, a question I didn't get to ask was what your favorite Human in Equestria story was.

Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff? I think YeS.

45999

Any questions that didn't get answered can be asked on here, definitely.

As for my favorite HiE - it's this one. http://www.fimfiction.net/story/3893/My-Little-Person%3A-The-Strange-Case-of-Lyle-Hartman

Lyra always makes human stories more interesting, and that one has an excellent ending.

Jivin'! . . . *remembers that he doesn't remember the questions asked in the podcast* Frak!

Cool! I'm already reading that bloke's Indiana Jones/Daring Do fic, so I'll definitely check it out. To repay a rec with a rec though, I recommend you check out the story below as it's not only funny and suspenseful, but it also might just be the best portrayal of Celestia in the Bronysphere.

Good interview by the way! It sounded enjoyable. And until you mentioned it I never really realized how popular you fic really was. But none-the-less some good background on it all! Now I wait for the next chapter.

Ah yes, now I remember. Why did Luna get so freaked out about Lyra knowing about humans? Did a human eat her cat or something?

47248

I said in the interview that a lot of that was explained in Chapter 9, but I didn't want to give spoilers. Then the very next question was about my human characters... :facehoof:

But yeah. Celestia and Luna had a very strict policy that humans were to be forgotten, so when Lyra knew what they were, she obviously got angry. A lot of the reason it was such a violent reaction was because that's in character for her. But it does have a lot to do with the fact that, after a thousand years of absence, she at least hoped that her sister would have successfully wiped out all the traces of humanity. Of course, she didn't realize that she was actually speaking to the only human in Equestria at that point...

48022
Ah, so that's just an artifact of her personality. I see. I didn't get that reading the chapter, so I kinda assumed that she had some Shogun-like experience with humans.

Next question. How long did it take for you to plot out the outline of this story?

48156

It was going around in my head for a while. I think I started working out the plot in late October, and had basically figured out the ending by the time I started publishing in December.

48233
I see.

Most big name webcomic artists develop a backlog of strips that are ready for publishing, and some fanfic authors write out the entirety of a fic before they begin posting. Considering your own experiences with deadlines are you planing to adopt a similar policy with your next fic?

48263

When I started out, I had about seven chapters either finished or started when the first one was posted. Now I'm finishing them within the week before they come out. I had good intentions...

If I do another fic, it probably will not be this long. But yes, I'd like to worry less about deadlines.

48286
Well, if you do decide to write the fic out beforehand make sure you don't release it all in one day. That's Karazor's biggest problem, next to the fact that his stories always seem to end in completely unnecessary Diablous ex Machina that his reviewers and fellow Spacebattlers have to convince him is a bad idea.

Next question: Do you ever find yourself getting writer's block? If so how do you work through it?

48402

Just realized the irony of not answering a question about writer's block for 2 days... The next chapter actually has a lot of stuff I need to work through to make sure it's handled just right. Since I know what happens, it's really just the details and reactions that I have to figure out.

Typically getting through writer's block involves getting off the Internet. Random web browsing is a killer. But then again, doing research can get me rolling. Stuff like looking up maps and images of Des Moines area malls, abducted child cases, how to get through airport security without an ID (surprise: it actually takes less time overall).

It's either that or distract myself to get my mind off the story for a while, and then something will come to me.
