Cloudsdale Congress · 2:41am Feb 12th, 2013

Cloudsdale Congress is in Alexandria, Virginia (USA) on March 9-10. Registration is $35. Questions for you:

1. Are you thinking of going? It's so close to me, I have to at least check it out on Saturday.

2. JMac wants to do one or two author's panels. What should be the topics for the panels? I'm thinking just "Writing fan-fiction 101" and "Writing fan-fiction 201".

Alright, I'm going to ask, WHY DON'T THEY BRING THESE FREAKING CONVENTIONS TO CENTRAL USA?!

Population density, mostly. (Yep, I'm here in the middle of flyover country too)

818937 There's Midwest Brony Fest in Kansas City this July.

1. No, I'm afraid not.

2. The ramifications of underwater basket-weaving on sub-aquan Lunar politics. :pinkiehappy:
...Oh wait, it has to be writing-related? In that case, I've got nothing.

"How To Be A Good Writer" and "How To Be A Popular Writer".

Two tables, one on either side of a convention hall. Both panels have to shout over each other. Winner is determined by the inevitable fight to the death that breaks out near the end of the allotted time.

Look, it's not like any FIMFic authors are gonna get top billing on the guest list here. We gotta have something to draw people in.

818937 818960 819014 You can't fool me. These supposed "plains states" were invented by Hollywood filmmakers to provide pastoral back-stories for their heroes that would give maximal contrast with, you know, real life. But after years of indoctrination by movies, people believed so strongly in the existence of places like "Kansas" (first seen in The Wizard of Oz) and "Indiana" (Hoosiers) that people claiming to represent these places were able to get seats in Congress and gather yearly farm subsidies, which I presume they distribute among their co-conspirators at their palatial vacation houses in Newport or on Martha's Vineyard, all the while laughing at our gullibility. I tip my hat to their devious and daring plan.

March 9? Seriously??

My freakin' birthday?!

As for the panel, what about a panel on creating characters for your stories, How to make them interesting without turning them into Sues.

"How To Be A Good Writer" and "How To Be A Popular Writer".
I don't think I'm qualified to speak on these topics.

It is actually possible for a con to treat writers well. Las Pegasus Unicon seems to be treating fanfic with respect.

819058 Quality and popularity: How to get read without writing "Twilight Sparkle and the Quest for Anatomical Accuracy". (Not that I would know.)

But fighting to the death is cool too.

819090 Yeah! Well, I think I can take you.

Considering I live in Virginia and all I write is OCs, I could talk the con's collective ears off about this.

Now I just need to figure out how to get up there and back in a day so I don't have to spend anything on a hotel stay. Also, whether they're pulling the same deal as Bronycon where you get in free if you're on a panel.

:pinkiegasp: How did you find out!

Though Indiana, Ohio and maybe Illinois aren't really plains states. Not even we are THAT boring. (Note: we are still pretty fucking boring.)

819139 Wolf Park, outside Lafayette, Indiana, might be on my "top ten most-interesting places in the US" list. But that's because I'm nuts. About wolves. I drove over a thousand miles to spend a week at one of their wolf behavior seminars. It was me and a bunch of field biologists and zookeepers. Everybody else went to a hotel after dark, but I couldn't afford a hotel, so they let me sleep in the grass outside the wolf enclosure. Just me and 16 wolves surrounded by 8 acres of land. About halfway through the week, one of the instructors told me that the wolves can chew through the steel fence if they see something on the other side that they really want. I slept less deeply after that.

Now you see, more of Indiana needs to be like that. We used to have forests! With trees and animals!

Now? Corn. And soy beans. I suppose southern Indiana has something going for it. More rocky and interesting. And the northern most part has got that big ass lake going on. We used to have a cool race, but....I am not the racing buff my dad is, but I understand that the Indy 500 was badly crippled by some colossal mismanagement on the part of it's former owner. (Who got fired by his MOM for it.)

One of these days I'm finally going to go to a convention. One of these days...

"The ramifications of underwater basket-weaving on sub-aquan Lunarpolitics."

Best. Panel topic. EVER.

:pinkiehappy:

Virginia... that might be within plausible driving/busline/visiting distance. Provided that's not Easter break week when we're going to Florida. That could even happen.

819109 Talk someone into letting you crash on their couch overnight. (preferably ahead of time so you don't have to worry about it.) That's probably what I'd be doing.
