Let's read poetry! · 7:06pm April 21st
Poetry doesn't get nearly enough attention on fimfic, so I thought I'd put together a list of some of my favourite poetry on the site and why I like it. I'm gonna try and keep myself to one fic per user, but please know most of the users included here do have other poetry fics that are just as worth reading! I'll try and keep this updated as I find more poetry I like.
Three Poems for Discord
Slipshod Extension's Three Poems for Discord is probably the most upbeat and fun fic on this list, It's a great collection of poems themed around Discord, obviously. It's a really fun read, and full of really intelligent and interesting use of words - it has this (dare I say?) chaotic grip and mastery over the language included that really draws you through and along as you read. It does justice both to the character of Discord and the medium of poetry.
the imminent wreckage of a forthcoming tide
SecondPrances' the imminent wreckage of a forthcoming tide is a collection of explorations of failing and flailing relationships. It is bitter, sour and afraid and it has the words - the openness - to show this, the poems manage to capture very bluntly and honestly these failings and fears and tiny little scenes so well.
All Teeth
Regidar's All Teeth, unlike the other fics included here, is not a collection of poetry but a single poem (or two?) about Trixie and hopelessness. I'd say the form and presentation is the stand out here (and it definitely does stand out), but the imagery and phrasing used is just as great... and powerful. I wish I had a bit more to say about this, but it's one that really speaks for itself better than I could speak for it! It's what inspired me to write poetry myself. I think that's high enough praise.
And In The
RunicTreetops' And In The is a great exploration of experimental poetry - every poem included is unique in its style and presentation. It manages to bend it's form to fit the emotion, the feeling, the purpose of each poem included. At the times it is sorrowful, it's not hopeless. At the times it is hopeful, it is not sorrowless. Another case where, unfortunately, I don't have the words I wish I did for it.
Devotionals To A Frozen Goddess
Undome Tinwe's Devotionals To A Frozen Goddess explores a relationship between Cozy Glow and Flurry Heart, a cold and toxic back and forth: It has a consisently magical style, a perfect grip over the words and meter, the flow between the two that creates this enraptured feeling, that allows you to fall into the space between Cozy and Flurry. It is (maybe) the most stereotypically poetic of all the fics featured here, and I mean that in the kindest way possible.
But why poetry?
Poetry is a wonderful thing. It's emotion and expression condensed and experimented with, it's words purposeful and meaningful beyond their selves, existing beyond shackles that traditional prose can bring. It's a self replicating beast, I find: reading poetry makes you want to write poetry. I was first inspired to write my own poetry after reading All Teeth. RunicTreetops was inspired to publish And In The after reading the poetry of SecondPrances - and of me. I've no doubt that Runic will manage to inspire someone else too - that all the poetry here has that power.
And just because I oughta...
I'll shill one of my own poetry fics too.
found object is a collection of poems. I wrote it. I have been told it's good.
Appreciate you so much for this! There’s a few I haven’t read yet.
Embarrassingly, I've never read any Ice Star, but they write poems - maybe some will appeal to you.
