    Eclipse 2024

Best of luck to everyone chasing the solar eclipse tomorrow. I hope the weather behaves. If you are close to the line of totality, it is definitely worth making the effort to get there. I blogged about how awesome it was back in 2017 (see: Pre-Eclipse Post, Post-Eclipse

    End of the Universe

I am working to finish Infinite Imponability Drive as soon as I can. Unfortunately the last two weeks have been so crazy that it’s been hard to set aside more than a few hours to do any writing…

    Imponable Update

Work on Infinite Imponability Drive continues. I aim to get another chapter up by next weekend. Thank you to everyone who left comments. Sorry I have not been very responsive. I got sidetracked for the last two weeks preparing a talk for the ATOM society on Particle Detectors for the LHC and Beyond, which took rather more of my time than I

    Imponable Interlude

Everything is beautiful now that we have our first rainbow of the season.

What is life? Is it nothing more than the endless search for a cutie mark? And what is a cutie mark but a constant reminder that we're all only one bugbear attack away from oblivion?

    Quantum Decoherence

    Happy end-of-2023 everyone.

I just posted a new story.

    EInfinite Imponability Drive
In an infinitely improbable set of events, Twilight Sparkle, Sunny Starscout, and other ponies of all generations meet at the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

This is one of the craziest things that I have ever tried to write and is a consequence of me having rather more unstructured free time than usual for the last week.

2023

Italy · 3:54pm Sep 3rd, 2023

This week, I am in Italy. Having escaped from the UK; had a series of adventures on trains between Paris, Zurich, and Milan; and acquired a few blisters.

As is customary, I took Twilight Sparkle with me, although, so far, we have been both too busy reading notices and inspecting exhibits to indulge in a photoshoot, but here's a photo of breakfast at the Paris Gare de Lyon.

As a big science museum fan, I have long wanted to visit the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci in Milan. It did not disappoint. There was a really good selection of exhibits and displays, including a lot on particle detectors - the LHC, Gran Sasso, BaBar silicon vertex detector (tiny compared to what we're building now) and, of course, plenty of models of Leonardo's machines.

There was one curious translation, which might offer fan fiction inspiration. There was a display inviting visitors to Guess the City after being presented with a lot of data on the resources of that location. If this was not sufficient, there was a clue at the bottom:

Decipher that cryptic bit of mathematics and you may be on your way to Hogwarts. Insert your idea for a mathematics themed fanfic here.

How do they get the translations of platform to binary? and handy having the easily readable answer at the bottom if you remember your symmetrys? :trixieshiftright:

Twilight is a great travelling companion!

Sounds like a wonderful museum. I hope to visit it someday.

Got 101.11 for the binary version of 9 3/4, well, 9.75.
Would a decimal point be call a binary point if you're in base 2?

I think a good mathematical mlp fanfic idea would involve Rarity and/or the Pies talking about how crystals are classified using group theory.

The generic term is Radix-Point. In binary, binary-point is acceptable.
