    Well, color me impressed.

All 78 episodes on 2 discs, the translation is just as solid as the Hulu version, the subtitles are on by default, and they even translated the mid-episode character cards.

Well, because there was no TYT this week...

Here's an absolutely adorable tutorial on how to hug your pony from doubleWbrothers.

So I've been busy away from ponies... Again...

With my quest/race to get a Rainbow S on all of Freedom Planet 2's stages, my creativity lit up like a bonfire again, and I started crafting an alternate ending of sorts for the past week.

That story is now complete, and posted in its entirety over on AO3.

I'm filing this under "Personal Greatest Gaming Achievements Ever".

I seriously hope this video looks as impressive as it felt.

Pointers for those unfamiliar with Freedom Planet 2:

I'm glad other fans *want* this to be a good comparison, but... · 1:41am Jun 29th, 2023

...But the fact is that it's not a good comparison.

Because G5's writers don't have the stones to even begin to make Opaline comparable to Mother Gothel.

Yeah, I said it. Opaline is far too cartoonishly evil.

Doesn’t Opaline feel different between TYT and MYM?

Yeah. Probably a mix of different writers and an overall more cartoony flavor.

Fair

That said, between her over-the-top antics, there have been a few moments when Opaline genuinely felt like she had the potential to be horribly wicked. Even inspired me to write a tiny dialogue some months ago where she "gives" Misty her cutie mark.

It's a good comparison, but I don't see Misty going as far as to hurting Opaline. I kinda see Sunny or one of her friends likely doing it.

I think the critical difference is that Opaline is written by several different people. She is legitimately menacing in Chapter 4, but in TYT is generally played for humour.

It's not that the writers are bad or lack the initiative, it honestly feels like the big wigs at Hasbro decided to not give the writing staff enough time to polish the scripts, so the show feels like it's 75%-ish complete.

Agreed. I would say they'd be a lot more similar to the Sorceress (from the third Spyro game) and Bianca (from the Spyro series. of course), though even then, there are still significant differences (for example, Bianca didn't stick around to try to spy on the Sorceress and, thus far, Misty doesn't have a Hunter Expy).

It could be for all those reasons.

Once again like gen 4 you have to give the show markers credit for al least keeping the show watchable.

When Opaline grounded Misty, she didn't just confine her to her room or forbid her to leave the castle.

She tied her to the floor. That's straight-up torture.

Then there was the child murder thing.

5735428
Welp, MYM Opaline is more evil then TYT Opaline

5735428
I’m glad someone else noticed that. Obviously the scene was played for laughs, but realistically it would count as child abuse.
Not to mention the possibility this wasn’t the first time Opaline did this…

5735434
And this is probably why it's a key moment in Misty's heel-face turn, as it's undeniably cruel.

5735428
I'm guessing by child murder you're alluding to Sparky? If so, this nicely shows just how vile Opaline is; she doesn't regard Sparky as a living thing, more a prop to completing her goal.

5735438
What I like is how Opaline seems to know that too. Notice how she’s acting really nice and supportive when she comes back, because she understands that you can’t be evil all the time if you’re trying to manipulate someone.
Again, it’s more horrifying than the show’s letting on.

5735455
Hence why I think she's one of MLP's most notable villains; she's a very realistic depiction of an abusive parent. According to sources more knowledgable on the topic than I am.

5735455
They keep it light for younger kids, but that kind of abuse is particularly insidious.
It's not constant physical abuse, or even emotional "Oh, you're so terrible" that really drains a person and keeps them coming back.

Narcissistic abusers know when to show just a little bit of niceness to keep their victim under control.

MAJOR props to Misty for finally realizing Opaline's game and breaking away. That's not easy to do.

5735470
Bonus points for her going back and forth on the issue for a long time before finally choosing her friends. Again, more realistic. If it was so easy for her to leave she would have done it a long time ago.
