Bad Dragon

I write so that one day I may finally stop writing and be free, but these damn new ideas keep finding ways into my brain. I need to write more to vent them out!

Nuclear fusion · 8:34am Dec 15th, 2022

By now, you've probably heard the news about the net-positive nuclear fusion:

This is the greatest news of all time. The most important invention of humankind.

This changes everything. With this technology, we don't even need the Sun anymore. We can live and thrive in any spot in space.

With infinite energy, there aren't any limits anymore. The Universe is in the palm of our hand.

And the working reactor is quite simple. All they did is fire a bunch of lasers on frozen hydrogen and received back 50% more energy than they invested in just a billionth of a second.

I don't think people understand what this means. History will write down only two eras. Pre-free energy world and limitless-energy world.

Usually, I don't write blogs like this, but this is the most important event in the history of time, and I was alive to witness it. If there was or will ever be a reason for a blog, this is it.

We've had our differences, humanity, but today I am very proud of you.

This is amazing!

We've had nuclear power for literal decades and haven't done a fucking thing with it really. We have a few plants but not enough to make a difference. Hopefully, we actually do something with this discovery and not just sit on our asses like a bunch of morons.

The power of the Sun in the palms of our hands.

5703436 Thus far, we've used nuclear fission. Fusion is the exact opposite process.

Energy is the most valuable resource in the Universe. This technology promises limitless energy. It's like a neverending gold mine. There's too much to gain for people to just sit on their asses. Whoever masters this will gain a tremendous advantage over all the rest.

5703437 Indeed.

We just need to find a way to destroy all the stars because they're wasting our fuel.

a toast to the future of humanity! (despite the best efforts of the detractors)
Just visited the Houston space center yesterday, honestly pretty swag.

5703462 I've already given up on humanity, but with this technological breakthrough, a spark of hope has taken root in my cold heart. Maybe there's hope for humanity yet.

honestly this vacation with my gf is showing me that thier is more to life and humanity then it seems, maybe ine day we will be up in the stars but maybe im being tooo optimistic,

i believe in this technology tho

5703466 We've already wasted 80% of the available hospitable time around this star. If we don't look outward, it will be the end of us.

That's great! ... assuming this thing really works... And NO, just because someone 'claims' it works, or even 'demonstrates' it 'works' doesn't prove it really works :trixieshiftright:.

  • Theranos claimed for YEARS that their miracle device worked before their lies were exposed, and they had to admit it never did.
  • for years, we heard claims that 'cold fusion was just around the corner!' Heck, there even were (still are?) experimental reactors where allegedly it worked! ... until the company running them was asked for proof.
  • don't even get me started on how many 'breakthroughs' we had in quantum computing in the last five years alone. I lost count of how many times I read rumors that 'IBM/Microsoft/Nvidia/Whatever is going to present a workable general-usage quantum computer the next year :pinkiegasp:!' ... yeah, still waiting for one (yes, I know there are some task-specific quantum computers, but we had those for YEARS).
  • and battery technology? Oh boy... Every few months, there is a new article claiming, 'Scientists designed a battery that is ten times as good as Li-Ion!' How many of them hit the market? Hmm... zero (well, one, if you count Toyota's Solid-State battery, but they're still in an experimental stage and have their own problems).

So, until they build an actual power plant based on nuclear fusion, I'll remain skeptical :unsuresweetie:.

5703575 You may be right. It's taken 60 years to get us this far. It might work in principle and even in the lab, but building a working power plant may be a whole new beast of its own.

The technology might not even be ready yet. Remember the first virtual realities a few decades ago? They existed. You could even buy them in the store. Another name for them would be: 'a headache machine'. The technology simply wasn't there for virtual reality to become usable. Only now have we progressed enough for it to become viable.

Even if we build a laser power plant, it won't just suddenly replace all the energy. It will probably be akin to nuclear plants we have today. It took a hundred years for them to anchor themselves into the power grids around the world.

I don't need them to replace existing power plants to believe it works. All I want is a single - even experimental - power plant that can prove that putting in 1000W gives you back 1500W. If they build that - even if it will be expensive, unstable, and require a shitload of resources for maintenance - it will start a revolution.

But until then, I'll remain a 'doubting Thomas' :trixieshiftright:

5703577 I think a decade or two from now, we'll be able to continue this conversation.

I would bet more like three or four decades, so if it's only takes just one or two, I will be thrilled :rainbowlaugh:

But question is what will it lead to? Are we as a race rdy for this? I mean I get it’s a new recourse that can help but let’s face it humans are dangerous with anything in there hands, I just hope we can be responsible with this

5703580 Once you have a prototype, it's easier to progress. And we have that now. Still, it may take some time.

5703581 This technology isn't dangerous.

We will, however, learn more about fusion which has implications for making more powerful fusion bombs, and those are dangerous, indeed.

I do wish we lived in a world without nuclear bombs. As we are now, it's only a matter of time before we destroy ourselves. Nuclear fusion, however, could allow us to escape Earth. After that, even if the planet gets destroyed, the species will go on.

Dude. Thank you for sharing this. Now I'm going to pass this around to those who I suspect might be interested.

5703742 I think everyHuman should be interested. This affects us all. This can save us all.
