Archery! A Bond Formed in the Noonday Sun

The sun’s rays shone through the window of a small dress shop as a slender and lovely unicorn with a purple mane walked up to her mirror and began to get herself ready for the morning. As she began to comb her mane, she listened to the sounds that were coming from the downstairs of her boutique and to the sounds of the two ponies working below. A smile came to her lips as she began to think about her new tenant that had come to live with her a few days ago. Ever since the mare came, Rei has had been nothing but helpful to Rarity. She would help with the clothes, cooking, and even cleaning up the place. Rarity let out a sigh as she placed her brush down and stepped away from the mirror when she heard a high pitched voice also coming from below. Her little sister had also came to visit for the next few weeks, “Really mother and father, how many times are you going on a ‘vacation’ and leave my sweet sister behind,” she thought to herself as she walked down the stairs. It wasn’t that she minded having her sister over to stay, but it usually meant that something in her house was going to be either burnt or destroyed.

“OW,” squeaked a little filly as she pricked herself with a needle.

“This is why you need to be more careful with sewing, Sweetie Belle,” said a black maned mare as Rarity made her way downstairs, “it takes time and a little control to push the needle through. It should be like this,” the mare then used her mouth to move the needle through some holes to help tighten the seam, “See?”

“BUUUUUUT REI! You and Rarity make this look so easy,” Sweetie said, her light purple and pink mane hanging limply on her head.

“That’s because I had years of practice,” Rarity said as she walked into the workroom to see Rei and her sister sitting next to a small orange dress that had a few apple patches on the side.

“Rarity, did you see how Rei was able to help me with the dress? I was even able to sow a little bit of it myself,” Sweetie Belle said happily as she nuzzled against her big sister’s chest.

“So, working hard and you can sew,” Rarity chuckled as she looked to Rei, “Is there no end to your talents?”

Rei smiled softly as she got up, her long hair swaying as she walked, “I just want to try to help out around here as much as I can. I am not going to just lay around here while I am staying.”

“Oh, I completely understand,” Rarity said as her little sister moved away from her and towards the door, a smile on the little filly’s face.

Sweetie Belle turned her head over to the two mares behind her and asked, “Oh and Rei, are you still going to practice singing with me later?”

“Sure,” Rei said, waving bye to the small filly as she left.

“Oh, and singing!” Rarity said as she walked to a closet nearby.

Rei looked to the door and then backed to Rarity,” I like to try and supplant my priestess training with some other activities. It kind of helps to keep my mind focused,” the red unicorn said as she watched Rarity get to items from her closet, “So, what type of dress are you working on this time?”

“Oh, I am taking the day off for right now and was thinking of spending some quiet time,” Rarity said as she turned around, “Tell me darling, what do you think of, archery,” she asked as she held two bows and a quiver in her magic.

A big wide smile appeared on the unicorn’s face in answer.

“So, If Sweetie Belle is your sister,” Rei asked as she watched Rarity use her magic to pull the drawstring of her bow taut and aim the arrow at a distant tree, “where are your parents?”

“Oh, on one of their many,” Rarity focused squinted her eyes to focus on the target as she let her arrow fly with a thwip, “‘vacations’, or as I like to call them, ‘lets dodge our responsibility as parents and leave Sweetie Belle with her sister for a few months!”

As Rarity took her seat on a picnic blanket, Rei got onto her hooves and took her position to fire her arrow, “I know the feeling, I’ve some ‘issues’ with my father,” with a bit of anger in her voice, she pulled back her arrow and let it fly through the air, hitting Rarity’s arrow and splitting it in in half.

Rarity arched an eyebrow, impressed at the perfect hit that Rei had made. Putting down her tea, she got up and took her spot, “Rei, I am surprised at you. Ladies such as ourselves do not have issues. I do, however, have complaints about my mother and father. Such as, why do they think it is ok for them to leave one of the sweetest fillies in the world alone with her very VERY busy sister,” she said as she let out two arrows at once on her bow.

Rei watched as the two arrows fly through the air, striking their target with amazing accuracy, “At least you know they care for you,” she said as she put an arrow in her bow, pulled back the drawstring, and let loose the arrow, “my dad could care less about me,” Rei said as she notched up another arrow and quickly let that one fly after the one she had just launched. In the air, the two arrows quickly caught up with each other and landed in succession just below Rarity’s arrows.

“Surely, you can’t mean that,” Rarity said as she loaded up another arrow to shoot, “I bet he is just really busy.”

“Too busy to come my mother’s funeral or to watch over her while she was ill with a disease that I couldn’t even pronounce,” Rei said, her tone not changing as she fired the arrows, but a tinge of venom was there.

“I see your point,” Rarity conceded as she took aim with three arrows, trying to one-up her friend.

“I haven’t seen him in so long, and personally I am glad for it,” Rei finished as she watched her friend take her shot, “if things had been a little different... I don't think I would be as close to my friends as I am now,” Rei said as she got up to fire her shot.

“Yes, your... friends,” Rarity said as she sat down and drank her tea slowly, “If you don't mind my saying so, you seem the most out of place amongst them. Compared to the wild Minako, the brash Makoto, shy Ami, and Pinkie’s long lost sister, you seem to be the more refined of them.”

You should see my other friends,” Rei thought to herself as she sat down with the white unicorn and began to drink her own cup, “I can say the same about you, from what I have seen you have some,” the red unicorn thought to herself for the right word, “unique friends.”

Rarity chuckled at that remark, thinking about the weirdness that some of them get into, “ Yes, I guess you can say that. You just seem so much more lady-like than them, it just seems unusual to be there.”

“I guess it’s just that, they are unique. They are probably the only girls my age who aren't continually impressed by how ‘gorgeous’ I look, and aren't always thinking that I am some sort of raven-haired goddess that is meant to be perfect all of the time,” Rei had a smile as she lowered her cup, “They just expect me to be... me and I can never thank them enough for that.

Rarity smiled in understanding as she drank her tea with Rei as the sun slowly began to sit in the horizon.

In the streets of Canterlot, there walked a little small purple filly with a black mane and tail. On her flank was a cutie mark in the shape of an h with a little curl; this little filly was walking all alone within the marble city, being ignored by some of the unicorns, “Momma? Poppa? Where are you,” the little filly cried out as she walked. Not seeing where she was going, she bumped into a pair of white legs.

“Excuse me, little filly,” The white stallion with an electric blue mane said as he looked down at her, “But what do you think you are doing here walking all by yourself?”

The little filly looked down and spoke in a soft voice, “I don't know. I just woke up to find myself here without my mom and dad. I have been trying to find them for a while now, but they don't seem to be here.”

The white stallion sighed with a smile as he listened to the filly’s story, “She reminds me of one of my sister’s friends,” the unicorn then looked down at the little filly, “Look my wife, who’s a princess, is making some supper in our room at the castle. Want to stay there until we find your parents?”

The filly let out an energetic nod as the white unicorn picked her up and put her onto his back, “Whoa! This is new, I never rode on a horse’s back before,” the filly said as she looked at the mark on his flank, “A shield? Are you a guard and is your wife really a princess?”

“Sometimes I’m a guard, but what I really enjoy doing is protecting little fillies like you,” Shining Armor said with smile as he ran to the castle, “ and, well we don’t have a kingdom yet, but she is a princess by blood. By the way, what’s your name kid?”

“Hotaru Tomoe.”

“They’re here, the guardians of the moon,” A shadow said, its faint voice barely above a whisper as it tried to form, “ They are gaining allies and are becoming more powerful while I am still stuck as a piece of SMOKE! I need energy, I need a body, I need,” the creatures eyes looked up and saw a small bird, “allies.” With a small chuckle, the cloud reached for the small bird, wrapping its smoky tendrils around it.

I should mention that before Shining came into the show, I had just meant for Hotaru to be alone in the city for a while. Then the BBBFF showed up. Also, I loved to write people and archery, its my favorite weapon to use. Also, as much as I am trying to keep to the magna characterization and writing, I just couldn't help but to give Rei her two hobbies from the anime.

Rules of bad Sailor moon fanfics 2 b: When writing Rei Hino, one must write her as a bitch. No matter what, you must write her as an uncaring bitch who is easy to tick off, have her be rude and condensending to every person she meets, and has little to NO interest in archery whatsoever. Also, she must be as boy crazy as her friends and have no redeeming qualties whatsoever.
