Surprise, another early chapter. I split a later chapter into two halves for the sake of pacing, so I felt it was fair to bump the schedule up a bit. Just a few more chapters now, everyone. Bear with me!
My family and I used to live in Issaquah. I went to the Bellevue Square Mall regularly, to Babbages, for games. This story is happening all over a place I used to live - for eleven years of my life. That really brings it home in a special way. I've been through Concrete. I've seen the setting for your novel. Soooo awesome!
I have this tingle, this itch, this feeling. Storyteller's twitch. Author's Ague. Mike... Mike left a functioning car down at Eliza's house. Mike may well be known to the neighbors.
If I were writing this? This would be the very last moment... the last gentle moment... before every last thing got blown metaphorically to hell.
Countdown To Miketastrophe: Chapter Minus One, and counting.
Huh. I'd been wondering how they got the horses.
In any case, while it's noce to see a friendly face, I get the feeling that Mike isn't going to be nearly as welcome by the neighbors. Especially when he's bringing news of the outside world to their domesticated blackouts. (Assuming that they know, of course. Not sure if they're hypocritical enough to have any communication tech of their own. Given Santiago, it seems like it could go either way.)
Meanwhile, Eliza's on sheepdog duty. Blissful ignorance is the best thing she can offer her loved ones right now, so she's taking it. She hopes it'll work in the long-term, but deep down, she knows it won't. And if they should learn that she consciously chose not to tell them? That could be very bad indeed...

Agreed. If that car's engine ever turns on again, I will be very surprised.

Sounds like a perfect storm of problems that could be potentially catastrophic. They've lived a long time in peace, steadily losing folks to attritional despondence. So if there was any time where the people of Concrete could do with a healthy dose of SVTFAP, now would be it before things blow up in their faces. Hmm. How's this gonna play out?
Ah, yes... what was it that Celestia told Eliza on Christmas Eve of 2013?
Fallout is a thing, Eliza. Radioactive material is in the air. Skagit County looks to be north of the general Puget Sound metro region where the nuke was set off, but I don't think it's far enough north. I can't see on this map I've got open whether you're east of the Cascades, but there are northerly and northeasterly climatic wind directions in much of the state.
You are quite probably a dead woman walking, and your family are dead too. This was about the point where you needed to decide whether to die gloriously for humanity or move the hell out of there, and you didn't make a choice.
Excuse me, I need to prepare a good neener-neener-neener.
Neener neener neener, you're just like your most hated enemy, ha ha ha!
And now you're telling him to make friends .
So that's how it feels to so completely fool yourself that you stop worrying about things.

When you have nothing else, self deception can be the one fine line between sanity and madness.
But that line is razor-thin. And when it snaps, it takes a lot with it.
I suspect the tension is about to overwhelm it...
And of course, we know it won't.

Oh... Oh, I didn't even think about that.

Y'know, I was reviewing this chapter for something I'm working on... I think you of all people might appreciate knowing I'm sequeling good ol' Mike with the stuff I mentioned in the denouement. I seem to remember you saying you liked him. I'm gonna wait til it's completely done to start publishing it, but prepare yourself. It's damn good FiO candy, and it's gonna kinda flip the table on a ton of AI ethics stuff, I think. Unlike with Heaven's Not Enough, we're gonna have a lot of AI presence.
Not ashamed to say it's already over 100k words and it's not even halfway done yet. Mainly written to explore the actual process of downfall for the United States, starting from the day before this chapter, and running through the first bit of 2021, capping off just a few months before Always Say No. And I've gotten much better at writing in the last few years, believe you me.
