"Let's see how they react to having an army pointed at them." Dick move, Gryphon King. I can see the value of learning ahead of time whether the Marines will keep their cool under pressure, before inviting them to become citizen soldiers, but still dick move.
Still, the human/gryphon conflict seems to have ended as well as it possibly could have.
I'm starting to think Equestria has the least disciplined military on the planet.
Poor Oriana. This will make hugging her slightly awkward, since one will have to stoop, rather than pick her up.
The Gryphons really wanted to make an example, of how they reacted to problems, how they dealt with agitator? Slander, and opposition? the Marines, certainly the Major, learned a lot just from Myrmidon, the flight, and the captive.
Poor Oriana, wonder if Flight Boots would be of any help to her, at least until the faster reailways and teleport patterns are established, given the need for Artex to get round alot and preferably at speed? I wonder if thats how he is going to end up with a Gryphon female. Transport Wife?
6259494 Kinda hard to have any discipline when the one supposed to be maintaining and teaching it doesn't have that sort of discipline themselves...Too much pride and arrogance too...Noble houses doesn't help the issue at all for that matter.
The princesses doesn't seem to be as military adept as the gryphon whom has millienias of military tradition and one big fucking lesson with several smaller lessons.
Equestria has only recently learnt a lesson about stuff like that in the prequel of this.
This chapter hit really close to home for me. I have a gf who is afraid of thunder and train whistles. Maybe not to the extent of Ori's but similar.
Excellent read by the way.

He wanted to know how they would react. If they came out swinging, being aggressive and hostile, there would have been problems. But they came out and said "We don't want to fight. But if you start one, we'll finish it." That shows a restraint and that you have priorities. Not fighting to fight, but fighting to defend. Which is what the Gryphons are all about.

He had a perfectly valid concern.
He took a risk, to get a quick answer.
He got the best possible outcome.
He just happened to put thousands of lives at risk along the way.
Better. *claps.*
6260047 It was your recommendation sir. I do not have many folks on my mailing list and I don't generally listen to council (even when I should perhaps), but even I could see the wisdom in enhancing it a bit.

Fair enough. But, it fits the Marine mentality as presented here.
And LordDragon, being one of the few to have seen both versions of this, I happen to like the new version. For which I believe we have you to thank.

It's possible that the marines and gryphons connected on a deeper level than is immediately apparent. There's hints that natural magic is making the two parties extra in tune with each other.
On the surface, it just looks like they took a risk they didn't need to.
6261268 Very perceptive good sir. You continue to amaze me with how alike we think.
6261279 Wait? There's two of you now? Oh lovely.
Don't know if the Marines would have all that powerful or enduring magic. It is just a guess but it seems that because the Grphyon lands have less of a magic saturation that the Marines won't be able to cast as well as Equestrian humans. Don't know. Otherwise it might be a good idea for Atrex to follow Oriana's advice and just be understanding of her issue and not push into it.
6279981 She did, but she still carries small 'hints' of things. She cannot recall any specific events, but she has impressions of things.
6280831 How much more of a slap in the face does somebody need other than realizing their own mortality? If THAT doesn't make you think, nothing will.
6288158 The man did follow through with the murder, she just survived. A quick punishment as opposed to years of being deprived? She got the situation resolved quickly and let the man get back to his people. She had enough experience with those kinds of situations that she knew what would happen.
We have a changeling, unicorn, zebra a earth pony... Only 1 position, what is going to be? A Princess? A Diamond dog? A cow? maybe a pig?
Let me guess... Gilda or another griffon?
It was a good chapter and a good story. Waiting for more...
6297046 Working on a confusing but dynamic interlude right now.
6303658 HA! I had not even considered that point. Excellent joke!
Hrmm, those marines are awfully quick to swear allegiance to foreign king when they have confirmed United States civilians running around getting themselves killed in Equestria.
But then again it is an excellent story development,.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Marines staying with the griphons. I would have thought that they would have had more loyalty to the humans since because they are, as far as we know, the only "peace" of America within the planet (since the majority of the humans are Americans [whom they have sworn to protect]) and because, right now, they just lost a lot of their guards in a recent attack by the blood mages, and might be attacked again.
I would have guess that if the Marines knew that there was a high probability of another attack by a hostile force, they would try to protect. I know that the situation in new humansvill is not great, so hey can't support 2000 new mouths to feed, but a few hundreds or even dozens wouldwork miracles in ensuring the safety of the town.
This along with the upcoming annexing, I would have thought that artex would have at least asked for volunteers.
But that's just me.
