With the Seattle's Angels announcement earlier today - one of the sources that inspired me to start this series - I'm feeling a little melancholy. Fortunately, I've had a pair of stories sitting on my docket that fit this sort of mood. The theme is one I summarized in my notes as 'The end of the rainboom'.
Romance is tough. I mean, that's obvious. There's a lot of pitfalls, blind grasps and wild hopes. It can be the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. But the long and the short of it is...
We're going to be taking a long dive into lesser known authors in December (and more on that next post), so before we go into that I think it's time to pull out some of the big guns.
Both of these stories are masterworks by highly skilled authors - and they also share the extremely uncommon narrative device that they're told in reverse chronological order.
Dreams, this week, are our theme. Not so much directly as roles within the story. They're a remarkably flexible tool in storytelling even before you account for the fact that MLP provides multiple ways (such as Luna) to mess with them. Today, I'm going to hit on two stories that utilize that tool - and I think present rather interesting pitches.
Okay, for starters I'm gonna throw a real curve of a concept at you: Discord with PTSD.
You know, I noticed I've got a lot of Trixie in the buffer for this blog series. I'd best start featuring her or I'll end up with Trixie Month. And we would never survive her ego after that.
Did you know yesterday was World Teachers Day? I had no idea when I started this blog post, but it's apparently a thing! And well timed, given today's subject.
Today we start with the legend Posh and the stupendous "Teach Me Goodness".
Possibly the smallest writing niche we have on this site - excluding things that are outright banned - is probably not what you'd guess. Nearly any fetish you can think of is represented in decent numbers, almost every perspective and fiction style is used and even the most obscure characters get a decent amount of play.
What we very, very rarely see, however, is poetry.
There's a lot of darkness in today's stories - but I'd call it the good kind of darkness. The sort that gives contrast and helps you tell where the light shines brightest. They're both crushingly sad in their own ways... but I also would call them both hopeful.
I'm running really behind this week, but damned if I'm gonna miss things. Though glancing at my story choices, it may be coloring what I picked this week.
Today's lead is Scythe by Liquid Truth.
So I'm going to lead today's Recommendsday with a warning. My writing is pretty squeaky clean - I don't do mature ratings and my use of red tags is not only sparse but light even when they're present. So I figure that it's worth a heads up that the two stories on the docket today are not that. Both are M-rated and for good reason. Both are fairly explicit and focus on sex, sexuality and sexual relationships - you can't just skip those parts without losing critical parts of the narrative.
Today, we've got a Pony-on-Earth piece and an Admiral Biscuit one.
To most people's likely surprise, that's two different stories and not the same one.
First we have Ride the Pony - Five Dollars by Irrespective.
Most of you have already figured out by now my selections for any given blog have a theme. It's usually pretty loose ("Both these stories involve Rarity" or "Both are comedies"), though some are more in-depth (future sets include "Both stories are written in reverse chronological order" and "These two authors hate each other".) But if you had to ask me what one of the themes would be, I would not have originally picked todays: "Stories that are part of a series about griffons that act as
I slacked with my mulligan last week, so I'm going to pull out the big guns this time.
Today's lead is The Price Of Salt by RoMS. And lemme state it up front: this is easily one of the top three Cozy Glow-centric stories on the site. (And I say that as an author who's well known for two of my own Cozy Glow stories.)
Let's get this one out of the way a little early so I don't do another oopsie.
First story today is The Only Tree In The Forest by Hap.
And so we come to the end of year three with this blog. Not a bad milestone for a project I more or less started on a whim because I wanted to gush about cool stories.
So let's end this one with some real bangers, eh?
Okay, so there's still new people to get through but you gotta remember that this blog series is mostly reliant on my whims. And I'm a little bored on that front, so I'm gonna switch gears and do a different pair of stories. Because I can. Also because I was reminded of one of these stories this last week and they're pretty damn funny.
And now back to our regularly scheduled program and my attempt to clean out my rookies shelf. (I've only got a few, I'm determined to at least catch up to this month with them.)
