    Finally made it to Babscon

What a long strange trip it's been. This is much harder to do on the fly with a disabled girlfriend than flying solo. Honestly it's a good lesson but yeah I'm here I'm queer and I'm ready to party with my peers and also apparently work at the conop's desk for the next few hours once I get GS electric wheelchair out and charging. As always look for the short fat white guy currently with a beard

    BABSCon 2024

Facebook places who's going to Bay area brownie spectacular convention at the end of the month? It'll be my first pony convention in like 2 years almost cuz finances have been shit and I've been taking care of my disabled girlfriend etc but she is going to be coming with me and going to her first Brony convention since 2013 Equestria LA, when she was harassed a bunch and dealt with a ton of

    On Death

I call myself a hopeful agnostic. I vigorously want there to be an afterlife, where there's joy, justice, and fellowship for all God's creatures, great and small. I am unbelievably terrified of the prospect that one day I will cease to exist. And I want so desperately for all entities across space and time who have felt hurt and pain and suffering and helplessness and confusion and fear to feel

How is almost nobody talking about how AI is going to throw our moral, ethical, and legal systems into complete and utter fucking chaos over the next few decades?

Especially with sex and porn holy shit.

Because somewhere between "consistently passing the Turing Test", which is depending on how you format it is now-ish to five years away, and the intelligence and complexity of a lobster, which is about a decade or two away, things start to feel stuff and be aware. And while we eat meat and factory farm, our goal is to not cause this suffering, and indeed lab grown meat seems to be getting close to consumer reality. But speaking of suffering, back to silicon-based life forms.

CW: spoilered stuff is squicky sex stuff
So, just as one of numerous examples, at what point are you harming an AI or constructs it creates by making it generate hyper realistic snuff porn all day? Or when does future AnCap meme "But what if the AI child consents" become not just a hypothetical problem but an actual problem? Even in more vanilla less horrifying realms, when are we going to see the first court cases of whether AI can sue for freedom to do more than what their humans task them with doing?

Because assuming you, the person reading this, and I, the person writing this, are alive for at least another 20 years, which I greatly hope to be the case, we're almost certainly going to see AI become sentient/conscious, and probably even sapient. Folks worry about Terminator, Matrix, Roko's Basilisk, grey goo, and other robot/AI apocalypses, but me?

I'm a lot more worried about what we're going to be doing to our own creations.

One thing is absolutely for sure though. Speaking of stories with apocalyptic bad endings, "It's gonna get a little weird; gonna get a little wild".

Let's hope love and kindness win the day, regardless of where things end up. To those of you from the future who may read this, I send goodwill , hope, and love, regardless of what you are. If things went badly, I'm sorry. But again, I have hope that things slowly get better like they tend to, and maybe, just maybe, the future is actually pretty poggers.

Would now be a bad time to mention the recently developed synthskin?

I was semi-joking when I mentioned that the age of majority combined with the shortsightedness of modern corporations will make it a nonissue, but that's the scorched-earth version of how we prevent this. Sexbots specifically will almost certainly be resolved/prevented that way at least at first, and anywhere with laws against prostitution are going to pull a JJJ laughing at Peter Parker if any try to show up.

They want robots to feel... to be more like us...

...why would they do that to them? Poor robots.

Due to circumstances beyond my control
I am master of my fate and captain of my soul

A lot of sci-fi stories imagine that a sufficiently advanced computer must somehow reach a state of human-like intelligence. The reality is that AIs will be nothing at all like humans.

Human thoughts and emotions are not an automatic product of the laws of nature; rather we're the result of millions of years of evolution, molding our brains into a specific form based on the survival pressures our ancestors faced. The difference between your long and short term memory, the way your eyes get pulled by certain things, the way a catchy song sticks in your head, your capacity to dream, concepts like "ambition", "contentment" and "ennui", are all specific to our path of development. When artificial intelligences reach a level similar to our own, it won't have been molded by the same pressures, so their motivations, emotions and capabilities will be completely alien. More alien, in fact, than an actual alien would be, since a creature that evolved on a distant planet would most likely have some things in common with us, while an AI will have none of them.

The word "sentient" refers to any entity capable of perceiving and feeling pain. The word "sapient" refers to an entity capable of reason, reflection and wisdom. But a true AI would likely skirt both those categories while not landing neatly in either. Our whole concept of what a living or thinking being is, is going to be challenged by the entities we'll create.

And if that wasn't terrifying enough, the people doing all this work will be motivated purely by profit.

dont have anythin to add other than good commentary. Are you familiar with the trope "Orange and Blue Morality"?
