What's your view on this? Should we gatekeep nerd culture? As in you must proudly wear a fedora or tin foil hat on your head and have some strange fetish. (You like MLP FIM Ponies for example) all normies/cenorship lovers not allowed in. We greet each other by tipping our fedoras. Kick out all the people who get offended over everything. Only freaks and weirdos allowed.
Could be done in some fandoms maybe. Lock the gates to the fun police.
i know that may sound like a good idea to you but honestly when i saw that my immediate thought was that’s cringy
but on a more serious note i think we can tell the “normies” form the veterans and like only the true vets will care and stay and eventually the normies will move on
cause the whole point ar least to me of the mlp fandom starting out was like that yeah we like mlp yeah its supposed to be for little girls but damit it’s good so no k don’t agree with gate keeping stuff just sounds like a great way to look like the biggest douchebags
These are exactly the kinds of people that gatekeeping should keep out, ideally. They're not really interested in the hobby, they're interested in being seen to be loosely interested in the hobby so they can be wacky and ironic about it for attention. Other people see this and think the hobby is something it is not; inevitably the flood of flavor-of-the-month chasers will remove or diminish what made the hobby unique and then move on to the next one.
I don't think we should kick out people who get offended over everything, we should just not allow them to block or restrict things for others who aren't offended by something. Near as I can tell, aside from the ratings/comments-toggle compromise, that's what we have here.

I don't know about this fandom, given it will be subject to a fundamental change very soon, but I get what you're trying to put across.
It DEFINITELY needs to happen with the Star Wars fandom.

Seriously, there's people claiming the original Trilogy as sexist because it has a primarily male leading cast, and they kick up a stink when people refer to Leia as Princess Leia instead of General Leia.
And don't get me started on how they reacted to one of the comics!
There was some PSYCHOTIC Imperial medical Officer was collecting bits of skin, blood, damaged mechanical parts and even one of the capes of Darth Vader, because she was obsessed with him! She MURDERED someone who made a coment about how creepy Vader's mechanical breathing was. And when she approached Vader to confess her 'love', as coming out of his meditation chamber without his full helmet on, he stabbed her with his lightsaber. AND THE FEMINAZIS LOST THEIR SHIT! They called it sexist and insensitive, how she just wanted to love him, and more, like they forgot that HE'S A VILLAIN!
The date leaves me suspicious as to whether I should take this thread seriously or not.
...So I'll just leave it up to debate as to whether or not I did.
That said, what happened to the SCP fandom is a really good case in favor of gatekeeping.
The site got invaded by progressives. The original moderators, down to the site's creator, were all forced out by hateful bullies. The original fanbase was subsumed and/or replaced. The original content is currently being suppressed and/or reworked. It's honestly pretty tragic; and I'm not even a fan of SCP.

But you're right, I am somewhat half joking here.
Gate keeping harms a particular genre/culture. Yes there's always gonna be those who are the hardcore base, but gate keeping drives off those who have a more casual or even passing interest and turns it into a toxic soup where only those who are initiated are allowed(i.e. a girls/boys/true fans only club). Yes there are those who will try to turn it into a veil and a shield for their racial, sexual, religious and political stances and those should be ostracized and pushed out, because they are harmful to everyone around them. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of RGRE and pony supremacist stories, especially when the characters of those stories realize such views are wrong/damaging.
