How do I get back at writing? Or: Ranting at the void at 2 AM because I can't sleep · 6:19am Jun 16th, 2020

Okay, cards on the table. My writer's block is not going anywhere. Otherwise, I wouldn't have used that godawful tittle up there. But, it's still there, as well as my extremely limited spare time thanks to my job (which I'm actually thankful to till have), my country going through three-to-five socioeconomic crisis and, of course, the COVID-19 outbreak (worsened by a whole bunch of assholes who swear it's not a big deal while thousands of people die).

But, and this is an important one, recently I got a call of attention. Namely, last weekend's shutdown of the site. It made me realize that, had it been definitive, there was a tonload of things i wanted to do and I never even got close to them. Sure, I did made the featured box with two consecutive stories (I never figured out if Stay ever made it into the box), and one of which got immortalized with a TV Tropes page, which I still consider the peak of my fanfic writing career. But overall, there are still things I want to accomplish, and none of them would have been possible as of last week.

Therefore, I decided to actually do something about it. Stop just lurking in the site and adding stories to the "to read" list, only to never really get to do so.

What am I going to do? I still don't know. As I said in a previous post months (if not a year) ago was that this is a total creative block, not limited only to writing. However, I did made a happy little list of things I've been seen able to accomplish, which goes as follows:

  • Short stories
  • Blog rants
  • Caustic criticism
  • Fan theories
  • Long and convoluted plans for grand stories that definitely are too much for me to actually write on my own
  • Micro-heroes

This is mostly a brainstorm of things I could do as of now in order to actually get back at making material. However, there's another, way less happy list of things I actually did back in the day that I left unfinished. The following could be the reason why some people on this site may or may not want my head or similarly vital body part separated from the rest of my anatomy. They're also partially the reason I can't get onto hard reading, as it feels like slacking:

  • I, Monster's second and third acts
  • Weltendämmerung's entirety
  • The Legacy of Starmare third and fourth chapters (yes, it was that close to being complete)
  • My Super Robot: Magicae ex Machina's entirety and its attempted shared universe (that one wasn't close)

And my secret list of projects. These are the ones that I wanted to surprise people with, but if that had happened, we wouldn't be sitting here, having this discussion rant:

  • Action Fanfics, starring the Atomic Knight, part of a shared super-hero universe with Blueblood as the eponymous Atomic Knight
  • The Brave and the Bold: Age of Wonder, part of the aforementioned 'verse, with Fleur de Lis as the Amazing Amazon
  • Kamen Rider: Everfrees, half-adaptation, half retake on Kamen Rider Amazons, with Trixie turned into an heroic monster
  • Trixie's Secret Problem, a comedy centered on a secret Trixie has hidden since fillyhood
  • Crest of Z, an exploration of different types of narratives and styles, as well as a love letter to superheroes and tokusatsu. Yes, the main character was Trixie

So, where do we go from here? As I say, I take the recent shutdown as a call to attention, and I do mean it when I say I want to get back at producing content. Either by ranting on the blog, or actually producing writing material. Either way, here's the deal. Every Friday, from now on, I'll put up something. It could be a blog post, a quick scene, a review even, or just a simple micro-hero. But there will be something up this Friday with my signature under it.

And just to make clear I'm honest about this, here's a free teaser; Trixie, Sunset Shimmer and Starlight as they were meant to appear in Crest of Z:

Stay tuned.

I'm too lazy to read this whole thing, but I know that a great way to get something written even if it's really silly is to do a silly stupid collab with a fellow writer. So, want to do a silly stupid collab?

Pick three ideas. Schedule three days where you can write for one hour at roughly the same time. Time it. When the timer goes off, stop.

The one you wrote the most of, or the one you felt the strongest urge to keep going past the timer?

Write that.

First, go read Aragon's blog The Part of You that Never Sleeps

Then go do a stupid collab with ST. Let loose and go wild. Write the craziest shit you ever have. It can be incredibly fun and liberating. Not that I know from personal experience. I definitely didn't drag out a massive collab with ST and numerous other authors. After it was finished. Repeatedly. Resulting in several thousand extra words of nonsense. And if I had done all that, it definitely wouldn't have been for Luster Dawns Incredibly Weird Dream.

Third. Come join the Quills and Sofas Speedwriting Discord server. We run multiple writing events weekly. Speedwriting in particular is effective for generating content.

do the same kinda thing i do for art block do writer challenges, like try your hands at crack fic, original pairing, one shots etc

here some trixie ideas;
trixie vs human stage magician
trixie wakes up and she a alicorn

here a random ship generator

I'm honestly surprised there was anyone left to read the blog after all this time. Thank you all for the support.

I'd love to do a silly stupid collab. That's how I met Nightwalker and we ended up creating a story that made it into the feat. box and TV Tropes. However, my main problem as of now is that I consistently don't have time, so it would be unfair to hold anyone else back with that. So, PM me and let's ping-pong ideas, but be aware I'll reply late. Very late. Don't hold anything in the meantime.

Yeah, I'll have to get back at you with that on the grounds that I don't have a consistent amount of spare time through a regular week to schedule a single hour. Much less three full separate hours. It's partially the problem here. Hence why I set a more flexible goal of setting up anything for a deadline. Though, I guess it's also a personal test to see what do I prioritize within a limited time spam out of reflex.

I'll get to read that one tonight. Let's put sleeplessness to use. I'll also join the group and discord. Though, I'm very shy with chats, so I may just lurk for the first week or so. I'll give my best try once I get the hang of the Schrodinger-lite that is my time.

That's what I need, goals. Hence the Friday one. It may look small, but it's about what I can manage for the time being.
