What's stuck in my head this week: Honeybee · 3:32am Mar 20th, 2020

Sometimes, the only way to get a song out of my head...

"Honeybee", Steam Powered Giraffe, 2012

... is to jam it into someone else's head. Like in The Ring.

I heard it first from one of GaPJaxie or equestrian_sen's friends, who was driving us somewhere north of San Jose to a Samsung conference on future tech, in a future-tech car that streamed us whatever song he asked for. From a satellite, I think. Or maybe elves.

The conference was invite-only, and I wasn't invited, but Jaxie pulled some strings and did some covert ops to give me a cover story and sneak me in. It had a great hall full of futuristic tech gizmos and demos. Lining it were conference rooms with continuous lectures and panels about developing apps on future specialized software platforms. The swag was free; so were the food and drink. The keynote speaker was Stan Lee.

Still, what I remember best from that conference is listening to "Honeybee" for the first time.

You may get confused trying to tell their voices apart. That's partly because the lead singer (Rabbit) and the guitar player (the Spine) are twins. Identical, supposedly, though the Spine is always taller in pictures. It's also because the Spine's vocal range is so great that he alternates between singing the low part and the high part.

Today Steam Powered Giraffe said on their livestream that their next album, 1896, will be released in April. I'm looking backward to it.

The world is far larger, stranger, and more creative than we can possibly keep up with. Imagine what it will be like when we expand to the stars, with thousands of planets worth of creative peeps (and creatures) making interesting things to watch.

We are so doomed. But we will be entertained, and it will be a blast.

Their movements hit the Uncanny Valley twice over to me: too robotic to be human but too human to be robotic and it's messing with my mind.

The song itself is nice, not the sort of thing I normally listen to but it does make me want to hear what else there is by the band so, I'll be doing that.

Aye, it's rather fascinating; I'm not sure which bits are CGI and which are clever costuming and acting, and I think it may in fact all be the latter. I imagine the doubt may also be part of the desired effect, though. Well done them!

I listen to these guys a lot. I like their cover of diamonds when I don't care for the original. Also captain Albert Alexander and brass goggles are fun to listen to.

I believe the only CGI is the opening, where they mess with the colors. But I think the vocals are dubbed, because you couldn't get sound that clean and consistent without individual mikes.

Steam Powered Giraffe are a great band.

I've heard three or four Steam Powered Giraffe songs before, but not this one. It's very pretty. Gives me a calm peaceful coastal feeling. Like Steven Universe sometimes evokes.

Almost all music videos are lip-synced/mimed. That said, good a cappella groups can sound that good live. For example:

Please listen to this it's amazing.

Old School SPG was good as hell. They're a bit weird these days unfortunately.

This is the creature in his natural habitat:
Can't take away his money 'cause he's got too much of that
Future boys will be future boys...

Ah, thanks.

The guy whose car we rode in is now building his own speakers since he can't buy any that are up to his standards or as well suited to his living room.

He has a knack for making time with him memorable.

I listened. That was, in fact, amazing.

Love this band

I want to get high and listen to music at this guy’s place. Probably Stevie Wonder.
