So, I've just recently learned that this Year of the Dragon will be the focus of the "Wood Dragon!" Not to mention Keanu Reeve's year. Yeah! Amazing! Keanu Reeve's a dragon too!
But I've recently learned that while the Year of the Dragon cycle happens every 12 years, a particular element is observed every 60 years!
Just had another idea for some characters to add into the story.
Real Name: Ditzy Doo Gender: Female Alias: Ponyville's Mailpony, Owner and Baker of Derp's Muff-Yum! Race: Pegasus Pony Current Residence: Ponyville
Bio: She gets to play a much larger role in the misadventures and crusades of MMDW. Following Twilight Sparkle's ascension to Equestria's Supreme Ruler, Derpy has opened up her own bakery, selling muffins, breads, and croissants. She still works as Ponyville's Mail Pony, but sometimes she'd get caught in the crossfires of MMDW's crimefighting career, and would inadvertently be a valuable help to the masked vigilante.
Real Name: Button Mash Gender: Male Alias: Gamer, a former YouTube Celebrity Race: Earth Pony Current Residence: Ponyville
Bio: Button Mash is more the "Honker" of the story. A young gaming fanatic, a big fan of the MMDW, goofy but intelligent, Button Mash is best friends with all the kids who looked up to the masked crusader, and is there to help, especially against the criminal – the Toymaker – who is out to destroy all video games.
He's still a bit sore that Hasbro ended his YouTube career.
I think these two would be wonderful additions for your series. Out of all the famous background stars, these two are among the few who've had some high attention for a variety of reasons. One mishap with her eyes suddenly has Derpy in fanfics where she's teaming with a time traveling pony, she gets a starring role in an episode, and we even start getting snippets of her backstory through certain flashbacks (Like a failed eye surgery and how she was once a promising young flier before her eyes got funky). As for Button Mash, whether you like him or hate him, that one video that showed a 'slice of life' with his many misadventures along with an equally popular mom character was undeniably cut short before he ever truly had that chance to shine.
I do not know as to what extent their roles would be for the series. But I have upmost confidence in the ability of the narrator to find a suitable place for either Derpy (Or however you call her) or Button Mash. Least in a fanfic, especially with the latter, we don't have to hear him whining (Which arguably discomforting to some fans).
Princess Twilight Sparkle: Current supreme ruler of Equestria. Eventually finds out about the new Mare-Do-Well's activities and tries to discreetly recruit her to handle certain things beyond the resources of the Wonderbolts, the Royal Guards or the Agents of S.M.I.L.E. In exchange for this help, she provides the new Mare-Do-Well with a respectable pay and top-of-the-line resources from Sunset Shimmer's adopted universe. Essentially the "J. Gander Hooter" of the story.
