Let's say that Twilight Sparkle's battle with Starlight Glimmer produced one more timeline: One where things didn't exactly go wrong, but they did go very differently.
Twilight in this case gives Rainbow Dash a boost to get through Starlight's interference. The Sonic Rainboom still happens, which is good. The bad news?
The spell Twilight cast made all of her friends and herself ascend to alicornhood years early, and injured Princess Celestia sufficiently confidence in her was lost and she has been weakened severely. And so for years, the six new Princesses have been in an Equestria divided between all six, trying to use them, guide them, or even get rid of them.
Into this chaos, Nightmare Moon returns...
"I'VE RETURNED TO OVERTHROW MY... Wait. Who are you?"

"In so many words, Your High—" Rarity cut herself off. The Nightmare had made her preferred form of address painfully clear. "Your Majesty. Cadence has tried to help, but she's only one mare."
"Ah, yes. The seventh of your illustrious little herd. I shall address my 'niece' in time. But for now, my duty is clear." A smile better suited for a dragon spread across the Nightmare's muzzle. "I simply must guide you tottering foals myself."
