As a tweak to the canon, it turns out that Celestia and Luna were not the only alicorns... They're just the only ones who didn't go insane or evil. They had eight siblings, mares and stallions, who were all alicorns but fell apart when faced with the challenges of their powers or life in general. Luna and Celestia sealed them up before they could do any real harm and gradually they were forgotten...
Until Nightmare Moon's return, thousands of years later. The seals on all of the alicorns have been weakened, and now they're busting out, all at once. Heaven help Equestria...
I don't say this often, but I really want this to be written.
Six insane and/or alacorns at once? Isn't that a bit much?
Heck, just a third would be pretty world-altering. But six more? Maybe if you have them weakened by the long years of imprisonment or something. Or get Luna to smack one in the face.
"Prithee, sister, but thine mane be out of fashion."
"Thou'st ne'er cared about mine styling before! What manner of deviltry be this?"
"Nothing more than a lark; my only purpose wast to distract thee 'til mine friends had organized."

I can see Discord having taking the wrong lesson from how badly things go when he tries to help and refusing to intervene on the grounds that he’d screw it up again. He might not even be wrong.
Six alicorns vs five. Seems a fair fight, actually. Except that, with the level of harmonic power the Mane Six and Young Six are packing we’ll need some contrivance. Equestria is stronger than its ever been.
That said, we’ve had it repeatedly demonstrated that Cadance, despite being awesome, is not a fighter. And Celestia and Luna, having retired, will be easy to ambush. As if they weren’t already. And Flurry... depending on when this happens, she may be a rebellious teenager with attitude. So there are possibilities.
I suppose this is the problem of Equestria. Alicorns are demigod to god tier... but so are their opponents, and they aren’t anywhere near the top of the heap.
I wonder if the crisis is bad enough to break out the Terrible Three on probation....

Their insanities do make them easier to deal with. As well as the fact that Luna and Celestia have a great deal more combat experience and spell knowledge. More than that, each can be talked down...

Oh they will use it but only if they need to.
I don't see how to write a realistic version of this story that doesn't include an apocalypse. Evil and chaos are always more powerful than law and order in this show, and that's without having numbers advantage.
