Fallout Ideas - the origins of Vault-Tec · 2:10am Sep 17th, 2019
It's occurred to me that they never really tell us about the company's history. So, for my fictional Fallout that'll sadly never be made, I think that if the villain is the CEO of the company, we should find out its history. And I came up with a backstory that is stupid, ludicrous, and nonsensical - but in the world of Fallout, it works.
Vault Foods Inc was founded in 2049 as a frozen foods manufacturer. Their slogan was "Vault Foods - seal in the freshness!" Their TV dinners were packaged in a signature cog-shaped tray, that served as the company's logo. Vault Foods became renown for their high-quality nutricious meals, and secured a contract with the US government to feed their troops during the United States' invasion of Mexico in 2051 (this is an actual thing according to the Fallout timeline on the Wiki). Almost every holotape and picture of the war showed soldiers carrying Vault Foods lunchboxes and cog trays, and soldiers spoke highly of their product, which gave them access to good food on the front lines of hte invasion, and with little prep time.
Vault Foods saw their reputation explode, and they capitalized on the opportunity with a swarm of merchandising tie-ins. Vault Foods became an unofficial symbol of the war effort; in particular, sets of Limited Edition Bobble-heads of Vault Boy in the uniforms of the US military branches sold like crazy. The US tapped Vault Foods to become the primary supplier of military rations, and their profits swelled ever higher. Seeking to expand their portfolio, Vault Foods began buying out smaller companies in computers, robotics, biology, and military equipment, and then developed products they contracted to the government at a bargain price.
While Vault Foods continued to market various food products and other merchandise in suburbia, in the eschelons of power they were becoming more and more influential within the US government and military. As such, the company rebranded itself as Vault-Tec Corporation.
Thats crazy enough to make sense
This is giving me major Aperture Science vibes. I love it.
Yeah, that follows. Just weird enough to make sense in the Fallout world. Or the real world. Amazon used to sell books and now they listen to everything you say.

Agreed. A leap from TV dinners to fallout shelters seems downright reasonable compared to going from shower curtains to folding space.

given my Fallout 5 is to be set in Seattle, maybe we should go full hog and imply Vault Foods bought out
AmazonValkyrie in the Fallout universe.
