Interview with Bricklayer

by Nailah

“Alright, now tell me my dear friend, what inspired your username?

Response:

Okay, so basically, grew up with LEGOs for the last 20 odd years or so and well… the choice was obvious enough. Well, funnily enough that wasn’t the first choice actually.

Believe it or not, my starting choice was “The Derpy One” but I figured that had already been taken. So the Bricklayer it was.

“What drew you into Mlp?

Response:

Well, this is a bit of a weird case. Browsing the internet, as you do, and every so often I ran into these crossovers with MLP. Now, I’m sure you remember the general public perception of ponies right? Very girly. So I got curious, why were these grown men writing stories with them?

So out of curiosity on Netflix one night a few years back, choose an episode at random -Luna Eclipsed- and just watched it to see what everyone was on about. And I admit, it hooked me.

“Who is your favorite pony and why?

Response:

Ooooooooooohhh, that’s a tough one. Twilight, possibly, because I can empathize with her nerdiness and being a general bookworm. On the other hand, there’s Fluttershy largely because like her, I cannot be sociable for the life of me without prompting.

“Favorite episode and why?”

Response:

Again, tough choice tbh. I could tell you my least favorite episode off the top of my head, but favorite? Now that’s another matter. I do have a soft spot for Luna Eclipsed, given it sorta kickstarted my interest in the show. Also, Stranger than Fanfiction, given how meta it is. I mean, Quibble Pants and Rainbow there were basically us as a fanbase.

“What inspires you to write?”

Response:

Now, truth be told? I honestly do not know. Is it the enjoyment people get out of my stories? Maybe. Or is it just to write a fun tale. Probably the latter. Despite all appearances to the contrary, I’m not doing this to win any popularity contests. Being fairly well known is just a bonus by this point. I just want to make people smile -or cry- a bit. Liven up their days.

“Tell us about your favorite story, and why it inspires you to write. It doesn't have to be mlp specifically!”

Response:

Now, favorite story? This isn’t even actually a fiction story to be honest. It’s called Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I’ll copy the synopsis from Wikipedia.

The central narrative concerns the killing of Danny Hansford, a local male prostitute (characterized as "a good time not yet had by all" by an important Savannah socialite), by respected antiques dealer Jim Williams. This results in four murder trials, with the fourth ending in acquittal after the judge finally agreed to a change of venue to move the case away from the Savannah jury pool. The book describes Williams' version of the killing, which is that it was in "self-defense"—the result of Hansford, who is prone to fits of rage, shooting at Williams with a gun that is on display, and Williams shooting back in self-defense—and not murder, pre-meditated or otherwise, by Williams. The death occurred in Williams' home 'Mercer House'.

Now, this is my favorite story for a reason. It’s a very character driven story, and not just around Jim and Danny. It’s also a story about the people of Savannah, the many colorful personalities and how they react to all of this drama. There’s a drag queen, a piano player who barely pays the bills, and a voodoo priestess. Really, this is one of those tales that is too strange to just make up on a whim.

“Give us the background of the author! Tell us all about you. Well in a short summary.

Response:

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard that same old story, same old song by now, so I’ll give you the abridged version from my profile page.

Remarkably shy, yet extremely nerdy. Have a wide array of interests, such as crime dramas like NCIS and Bones, but things with a touch of fantasy as films like the Godzilla franchise. Seriously, how can you not enjoy a giant radioactive dinosaur who can be a metaphor for the bomb, or just satire towards the Japanese government.

“With Mlp coming to an end, tell us one thing you have learned from your experiences, and how it has helped you to grow?

 response:

Well, it’s taught me a few things for sure, lessons I will hopefully keep to heart and it actually has improved my relationship with my parents. At times, they struggle to understand my interest in the show and I am happy to explain it to them while they listen. And if anything, this show has helped me gain a bit more confidence than I would have had, I suspect, had I not watched it.

“Is there anything else you'd like to say?

Response:

Hmmm… Well, there’s one thing. Just be yourself, and keep on… keeping on I suppose? ...Does that sound too cheesy? God, I hope it doesn’t...

Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of interviewing you, you have truly been a pleasure to talk too. I hope you continue being awesome.
