This Is The Song That Never Ends (EU Copyright Directive Update) · 1:46am Sep 13th, 2018

Take it away, Defranco!

TL;DW:
Good News: Article 13, the copyright fine and filtering section, now exempts smaller sites and nonprofits, meaning GitHub, Wikipedia, and maybe even Fimfic are exempt.
Bad News: YouTube, Soundcloud, et al and their userbases are still super duper fucked.
Bad News: No clear definition of what counts as small, non-profit, or a "micro-company," so there is a non-zero chance that everyone is fucked anyway, especially once copyright trolls come out en-mass
Bad News: Still no Fair Use protections.
Good News: The Link Tax is now not as hilariously draconian and you can post links and "some words."
Bad News: No one knows what the flying fuck the phrase "some words" indicates.
Bad News: Both Germany and Spain gave this kind of law a spin and it completely fucked everything up and didn't even make the greedy ass media companies who wanted it instituted any money

Now, as mentioned in my last post, this was just an amending voting session, the bill is not finalized. Final vote is going to probably be in spring. It's also going through a trilogue process but given what little I've been able to find out about what that entails, it mostly seems like it's going to be a closed doors circle jerk sess for EU plutocrats. Still, final vote is a ways away so keep protesting. Call your MEP. Call your national government. Call constantly. Go march if the opportunity presents itself. Furthermore, chances are the final vote will fall around the time of MEP elections, which means you should probably make it clear to your local MEP that you and any hundreds of your friends will make sure they never have a career in democratically elected political positions ever again if they intend to vote yes on this fucktastrophe. And if all of that fails, there are two years to vote out every last one of these rotten chucklefucks and repeal this bill, and failing that, I recommend going to a meeting of whatever Pro-EU-Exit political party is in your state and seeing what they look like because Christ, this shit keeps happening.

Keep strong. I will update you as news develops, as always.

Brit here. We have them running the country right now. They are in no way technologically literate. They'd be happy to pass crap like this inside or outside the EU.
