When It'll End, What's Next, and On the Topic of My Pessimism · 1:19pm Sep 10th, 2018

When It'll End

A Magic Turn of Events will end in mid-to-late November. Rest assured, I've thought of a good ending for it. At least, I think it's good. However, be reminded that I'll post the Conversion Bureau short story during its run, so expect a hiatus late September/early-to-mid October which is when I'll post its chapters.

So, after that...?

What's Next

I've decided to chip more in to Alex Warlorn's TCB setting. While this is not a 100% guarantee, I'm hoping to publish a medium-sized story set in that universe. 20,000 to 50,000 words long, give or take a few thousand. Expect this to drop almost right after Turn ends, so mid-to-late November.

When that's done, the Earth-meets-Equestria short story and longfic will roll out with no more delays. I hope to publish the short story mid-to-late December, with the longfic straight on its heels. The hard deadline is to get the short story out before 2019, the longfic before February.

And that's all if God allows it. If He has a better plan for me, I should take it.

On the Topic of My Pessimism

I usually see the glass as half-full, seeing the bright side of things. Sure, there will be problems, but it's only through adversity that heroes shine. However, if you've known me for at least the past month, you may have gotten a whiff of my attitude towards my own writing:

Ruthless.

What do I think of my longfics? Society as We Know It is a passionate yet half-baked, long-drawn out attempt at slice-of-life. The Search in Winsome Falls is a run-of-the-mill OC-riddled adventure with below-average villains. A War is a scattered mess, its only redeeming quality being its fulfillment of a narrow niche. Changing Ways is just worse than A War, simple as that. Magical Curiosity is a commenter-pandering hodgepodge that outsourced its resolution to an anthology.

As for A Magic Turn of Events, I'm trying to get my hopes up. However, don't be surprised if I develop a sour view on it a month after it ends.

Now you may be asking, "Why do you still write if you think you're such a bad or mediocre writer?"

First, I started this bout of fan fiction writing due to a New Year's Resolution. That's why Society started so early in 2017.

Second, I've been a brony for a long time. I may have joined the site in 2014, but I've been a fan of the show and its amazing characters since 2012. I've been on-and-off, sure, but I've come back again during the lead-up to Season 6 and I've never looked away from that point on. To smooch off the community by just consuming without giving wasn't sitting well with me, and that led me to make that resolution.

Third, I treat writing like a business, a job. I try to hit a set number of words per day except Sunday (currently 1,500), and then I publish chapters accordingly. Gives my followers a consistent and reliable stream of content. Yes, I could write everything in one go and then publish it piece-by-piece, but I've been writing this way for so long, I've gotten used to it which may offend the rational part of me but my irrationality says no. I write when I'm happy, I write when I'm sad, I write when I'm clear, I write when I'm full—I write, write, brute write my way past writer's block to mixed results. I don't like hiatuses unless it's during the Christmas season or if I have to attend to really important matters. I want to get this done.

Fourth, I know that practice makes perfect (usually), so I just write. If I try and fail...well, there's a lesson in there somewhere I have to learn. If I try and succeed, that's nice; see what made it successful in the first place and try to follow that for the next go around.

All I know is that I've improved from bad to decent, from decent to mediocre. I know I can't write the perfect story. No one can, really. However, I feel like Sisyphus, pushing that boulder up the hill ceaselessly. Well, what's the top of the hill for me? A good fic from me. A fic that'll be lauded for its complexity or its characters...just something other than "Oh, hey, I like this!" (although I'm honored to have people go out to say that). Something that won't just make you cry, think, or do your errands. I want it to have substance.

So far, I don't think I've made such a fic. Striving to make one such fic—I guess that's another reason to add to the list.

I'm sorry for the tirade. Have a good day.

Perfection is an unattainable goal, but it's still worth pursuing. Good hunting.

True, true. :twilightsheepish:

To take off on a tangent: I've seen you in the comment section of an old TCB fic. Does that mean you have some Conversion Bureau experience yourself? Maybe a bit of advice would be nice for the Bureau fics I'm doing.

I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with Alex's approach to the subject; most of my experience is with Chatoyance's work. Plus, I've never written a Bureau story myself. The closest I've come is the Oversaturated World.

Then I guess a TV Tropes page will do. Though, no pressure if you don't want to go any deeper. It's already an honor to have someone like you follow me and be commenting here. :twilightsheepish:
