February 2024, Part 3: Switching Coffees · 3:21pm March 8th
So, I've worded it already somewhere in a Discord server, so I'll quote myself:
I initially went to Buy Me a Coffee as my go-to tip jar, and because, at the time, both BMaC and Ko-Fi were integrated with PayPal and the former's upfront fees were indeed better than what I was told about Ko-Fi having fees baked into the system (it's a vague term, I admit).
However, with PayPal no longer supporting BMaC and me having to use a Paypal alternative, it's a lot of hassle and additional fees since I have to transfer from BMaC to said alternative and then to my bank, with BMaC taking a fee every time I transfer to a non-Stripe account, and just early this year, said alternative updated me on a policy that added fees since I last joined.
On top of that, since BMaC and Ko-Fi have changed since I last checked years ago, they have the same fee now: 5% of gross; I keep 95%. Which means that, with BMaC, I get alternative-related fees on top of the 5%, whereas with Ko-Fi, I'd pay just the 5% and what I already pay for bank transfers.
Thus, I will switch to Ko-Fi as my writing tip jar. I will indeed lose the ability for a Patreon-style thing, but let's face it, I haven't written high-quality stuff fast enough yet to justify monthly patrons.
As per advice given in the Fimfiction and Equestria at War Discord servers, I am going to also put that Ko-Fi link in future stories' long descriptions, though hopefully out of the way and not very intrusively. I will also take some time to clean it up over the weekend.
