Honestly? I am saddened you head into such a more mainstream direction with your writing. There is so much more you can do with ponyfics.
Because realistically speaking, you will probably have it hard to find time for both, furry fics and pony fics, and if furry fics should turn out as more popular because furries are around for longer and because they (probably) have a bigger community..... You can do the math what type of fics will be put on the chopping block by you then.

Heh, weird. I honestly would think of Furry as being less mainstream than MLP. I guess it's a difficult comparison to make, though... There's a fair bit of overlap, and while MLP has had an explosive growth, furry fandom has been around a lot longer... The only thing I can fall back on is that I've met a lot more bronies in real life than furries. (But then again, maybe the furries are just closeted because it's a more socially stigmatized fandom.)
At any rate, I want to transition into writing original characters that I can claim complete ownership of.

Honestly, furry may have more staying power in the long run, because yeah, the pony fandom is likely to die out eventually and furry is forever. But they're much harder to get an audience with, in my opinion. You can write and write and write and get absolute crickets. I've uploaded literally hundreds of stories to Furaffinity, and I have like a tenth the followers I do here. The community is more scattered in both location and what they're into, there's no feature box, so there's no way to have "breakout" story grab extra attention, there aren't any groups as such, it's harder to find and connect and socialize and network... It's a pain in the ass.
But it really is also nice to work with OCs and universes that are entirely yours, and furry is a pretty great way to do that. I feel like by the time it becomes a bigger market than bronies, though, it'll be because there aren't really any more bronies left.

Heh, I don't know about the pony fandom dying out.
Look at how long the Trekkies have lasted, for example.
But yeah, Furry is definitely here to stay, since it isn't tied to any particular franchise.
I do wish they had some of Fimfic's community-building aspects, though.
Ah, if only Knighty would get around to launching GenFic, maybe I could publish there as well.

I don't know if Trekkies would still be much of a force if there hadn't been quite a lot more good Trek over the years, though. What the future holds for pony on that front is still uncertain. (And yes, please, genfic already!)

The My Little Pony fandom will never die out. Not with what My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and G4 did and created.
What I am worried about is that, if Hasbro should go through with that unnecessary G5 reboot business, the G4 fandom could die out because most, if not all, are migrating over to the rebooted G5 and only create for that anymore, because they believe a fresh start could give them the same feeling back that G4 had at the very beginning.
Unless G5 sucks completely, which it really seems to do from what we've seen so far, and blows for Hasbro, but we can't predict that with 100% certainty right now.
And if Hasbro does go through with the reboot of the franchise for G5, instead of letting it be with the Equestria we know, then I hope it blows and that this makes Hasbro blissfully remember G4 and return to it with a new, non-rebooted G5 show or that it does bring back Equestria to us at least in G6.
Because Equestria has become my home over the last 5+ years and it offers so much more for many seasons or new shows.
A reboot for G5 would do nothing but wasting that potential. #NotMyEquestria

What I said was a possibility. I'm not saying that your furry fics will definitely be more popular. It could very well go the other way around, too, that your legacy will keep following you for the rest of your life, because this fandom has a lot of power.
What if you keep getting commissioned for G4 ponyfics until forever and if the amount of pony commissions will always be higher and more profitable than furry commissions?

Genfic should only happen if it is going to be its own, independent site, with no ties to FIMFiction.net under than the same creator and admin, for which you have to create new, separate accounts, ect.
Turning FIMFiction.net into a genfic site, as knighty said a few times, would be an insane and irresponsible thing to do, because writers from all the other fandoms and original writers would flood FIMFiction.net then and drown out ponyfics and their authors.
This would all but kill the pony fic community, by allowing in competition from other fields on the only dedicated ponyfiction site.
And it would subsequently destroy what was built here, because then FIMFiction.net won't be a dedicated pony fiction site anymore.

Yeah ... so far, I still have a ton more pony commissions to do than furry commissions. My waiting list for pony commissions is so long that I've considered raising my prices to deter people from requesting more...
Really, though, when it comes down to it, I've kind of reached the pinnacle of where my writing career can go inside the pony fandom... I'm not about to claim to be the #1 writer of horsewords of all time or anything, but I've gotten as close to the top as I'm likely to. Time to stop being a big fish in a small pond and migrate to deeper waters...
